Knights fall to Westchester but lead Mercyhurst 7-6 after Day 1 of Districts!

The No. 10 ranked (NJCAA DII baseball poll) CCRI Knights baseball team hosted the Eastern District Baseball Tournament. As they hosted No. 15 ranked Vikings of Westchester Community College from Valhalla, NY and the No. 17 ranked Saints of Mercyhurst North East from North East, PA.  Here is the Day 1 re-cap: in the first game Westchester CC defeated the Knights 11-3, Mercyhurst defeated Westchester 9-6 in 10 innings forcing the third game to start at about 5:00pm and CCRI was leading Mercyhurst 7-6 as the game was suspended due to darkness and set to begin at 10am Sunday.
Game 1
CCRI- 3 Westchester- 11
On the mound for the Knights Conor Gleason (North Stonington, CT) took the mound and did not have his best stuff as The Vikings got the better of him on this day.  Gleason allowed 10 runs, nine earned on nine hits with six walks to take the loss.  He was relieved by Dylan Pignitore (Johnston, RI) who pitched an inning allowing an earned run on one hit over 1/3 of an inning Co-Captain Chris Peralta (Providence, RI) closed out the game throwing 1 and 1/3 innings allowing no runs on one hit while striking out one batter.
At the plate for the Knights they scored all of their runs in the first inning as Dylan Gracia (Middletown, RI) led off with a single and was advanced to third on a double form Marc Dorsi (West Haven, CT).  They both scored on a 2-RBI triple from Co-Captain Tom Gavitt (North Stonington, CT), Gavitt later scored on a single from Mike Sherburne (North Kingstown, RI) giving the Knights a 3-0 lead.  However the Vikings were swinging the bats well and got a run I the second and four in the third on a grand slam from Mark Demilio.  They tacked on one in the fourth and four I the fifth on a 3-run homer from Tyler Gurman to win by the final tally of 11-3.   With the loss the Knights have no margin for error throughout the rest of the Tournament as their next loss would end their season.
Game 2
Mercyhurst- 9 Westchester- 6 in 10 innings
In a back-and-forth game Mercyhurst took a 1-0 lead in the first only to have Westchester rally back to score two runs in the fourth inning and two in the sixth to go up 4-0.  Mercyhurst battled back to score two in the seventh to make the score 4-3 Westchester.  Mercyhurst scored two more in the eighth to take a 5-4 lead but Tyler Gurman hit a solo home run to tie the score 5-5.  Gregg Spiker form Mercyhurst scored after singling in the ninth to give Mercyhurst the 6-5 lead but Mark Demilio led-off the ninth with a double and later scored to tie the game at 6-6.  Mercyhurst scored three times in the top of the 10th to take a 9-6 lead and held Westchester scoreless to win by the 9-6 final score.  Now Westchester is 1-1 and Mercyhurst 1-0 and will take on CCRI in game 3.
Game 3
CCRI- 7 Mercyhurst- 6 (game suspended before ninth inning begins due to darkness will resume 10am Sunday)
On the mound for the Knights Brendan Cabral (Scituate RI) got the nod and threw 7 and 2/3 strong innings.  Cabral was lights-out through the first seven innings but ran into a little trouble in the eight as he loaded the bases and walked in a run and hit a batter before being relieved by Rodger Lincoln (East Providence, RI). Lincoln gave-up a 3-2 single to pinch hitter Brad Cashman that made the score 7-6 before the game was called due to darkness with the Knights leading 7-6.  The game will resume Sunday at 10am.
