No. 12 ranked Knights sweep UCAP to capture Region XXI Title!
The No. 12 ranked (NJCAA DII poll) CCRI Knights baseball team hosted the Pointers of UConn-Avery Point (UCAP) for the Region XXI Baseball Championship series on Friday and Saturday. The Knights swept the Pointers in a best two-of-three series 2-0 to capture the Region XXI title in convincing fashion. With the two victories the Knights improve to 31-10 on the season and 14-4 in Region XXI play.
CCRI - 5 UCAP - 2
On the mound for the Knights Connor Gleason (North Stonington, CT) was masterful as he scattered five hits and striking out 10 UCAP batters while pitching a complete game in the first of the best of three games for the Region XXI New England Championship. With the victory, Gleason improves to 9-1 for the season. The CCRI battery of Gleason and Tri-Captain Tom Gavitt both from North Stonington, CT befuddled the UCAP batters over nine innings as they knocked-out the team that chose not to recruit them. In fact Gavitt helped recruit Gleason, whom he had played baseball with since they were in grade school, to come to CCRI after a year at Three Rivers Community College with this moment in mind and they were all too happy that it came to fruition.
Offensively for the Knights Mike Sherburne (North Kingstown, RI) led the way and was all the offense the Knights would need as he belted a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth and added a two run homer to left centerfield in the bottom of the eighth to break open a close game and propel the Knights to the 5-2 victory. Sherburne’s hot bat, impressive Knights defense along with the impressive pitching outing from Gleason combined to be just enough to give the Knights the 1-0 series lead versus the always formidable Pointers.
CCRI - 3 UCAP - 1
Brendan Cabral (Scituate, RI) pitched 7 2/3 innings giving up six hits while striking out seven UCAP batters to get the victory. Kevin Dale (Warwick, RI) came on in relief to shut the door and save the victory as the Knights sweep the Pointers and capture the Region XXI New England title.
The Knights’ offense could manage only six hits but some timely base running and defensive errors led to three early runs to propel the team to the title. Nick Coro (North Providence, RI) led the team with two hits and scored the third run after doubling to lead off the third inning. Coro scored on John Razzino's (Cranston, RI) RBI single and the team had all the runs it would need as solid pitching and a great defensive effort by shortstop Marc Dorsi (West Haven, CT) secured the victory and Region championship for the Knights.
The Knights now advance to host the Eastern District Championships next weekend. The Knights will face tow very strong teams: the Saints of Mercyhurst North East North East, PA the Region III Champion and the Vikings of Westchester CC of Valhalla, NY the Region XV Champion for the right to advance to the NJCAA Division II Baseball World Series in Enid, Oklahoma May 26th – June 2nd. The schedule and match-ups for the District Tournament will be released later this week.
