Knights Nipped by Nassau CC 5-4
The CCRI Knights tennis team traveled to Eisenhower Park in Garden City, NY to play the Lions of Nassau County College. The Knights lost a close match to the Lions 5-4. The Lions play both doubles and singles in a full best-of-three set format, both with no-ad scoring. The Knights were not without their chances, as two of the Nassau wins came in 3-set matches. Had either of those gone CCRI’s way, the Knights would have been victorious. Second doubles was the deciding match, going to 7-2 in the third-set tiebreak after the Knights fought back to level the third set at 6-6. However, in the end the Knights came up short losing by the slim 5-4 margin. With the loss the Knights are now 1-1 on the season.
The Knights took to the courts against the Lions for the Knights' second match of the 2012 campaign. Mike Fallone (North Providence, RI) fell to Matt Kallenburg in first singles, 6-1, 3-6, and 6-4. Anthony Lamborghini (Smithfield, RI) defeated Kevin Burgess in second singles 6-2 and 6-1. Timothy Holzinger (Foster, RI) fell to Judd Bahoui, 6-1 and 6-3. Nicholas DeAngelis (Northborough, MA) fell to Kenny Pinillos in third singles, 6-3 and 6-4. Ross Bouchard (South Kingstown, RI) defeated Stu Azrikan in fifth singles, 6-4 and 6-2. Nicholas Morin (North Smithfield, RI) won in sixth singles, defeating Danny Heller 6-3 and 6-1. Fallone teamed-up with Lamborghini in first doubles and dropped a tough-fought match to Kallenburg and Bahoui, 6-4 and 6-3. Holzinger teamed up with Bouchard in second doubles – the match of the day, but fell just short to Burgess and Pinillos, 6-4, 5-7, and 7-6(7-2). DeAngelis teamed up with Morin in third doubles, defeating Azrikan and Heller 6-3 and 6-1.
Freshman Anthony Lamborghini (Smithfield, RI) continued his dominance in second singles by allowing his opponent just three total games for the second consecutive match. Freshman Ross Bouchard (South Kingstown, RI) won the second of his two career singles matches, to remain undefeated in fifth singles. Freshman Nicholas Morin (North Smithfield, RI) won his first college singles match, pulling out a 6-3 and 6-1 victory in sixth singles. Freshman Habib Lawal (North Providence, RI) defeated Elie Karkini 6-3, 4-6, 1-0(8-6) in exhibition singles.
Knights’ Head Coach Deb Panzica commented after the match: "This was a tough loss, but there were so many positive things to come out of this match. I am looking forward to the team building on this as we progress in our schedule."
