Lady Knights deliver vs Dean 9-0, 10-2

The CCRI Lady Knights softball team hosted the Bulldogs of Dean College for a doubleheader on Thursday.  The Lady Knights decisively defeated the Bulldogs 9-0 in the first game and 10-2 in the second.  With the doubleheader sweep CCRI improves to 8-3 on the season and 2-0 in Region XXI play.  The Lady Knights used their full arsenal of talent in this regional showdown with excellent pitching allowing just one earned run, unstoppable hitting with 22 total hits, and selectiveness at the plate drawing nine walks while flashing speed with 25 stolen bases on the day.   

Game 1: CCRI-9 Dean- 0 (six innings by the mercy rule)

On the mound for the Lady Knights Co-Captain Devin Azulay (Attleboro, MA) threw six dominant shutout innings allowing just four hits, walking one and striking out an impressive 10 Dean batters to earn her second victory of the season. Azulay also added as single and a run scored to the CCRI offensive attack. Head Coach Liz Afonso commented “Devin (Azulay) pitched great first game, we also continued hot offensively from everyone! A very good win overall.”

At the plate for the Lady Knights Co-Captain Ashley Olson (Coventry, RI) went 4-4 with three singles and a walk-off 2-run homerun adding two RBIs and two runs scored. Olson was helped by Kate Carroll (Coventry, RI) who went 2-3 with two homeruns three runs scored, three RBIs, a walk and was hit by a pitch. Also helping CCRI was Nissa Perez (Warwick, RI) with two hits a stolen base and a run scored and Kate Fowler (Warwick, RI) added two hits and a stolen base.       

Game 2: CCRI- 10 Dean- 2 (six innings by the mercy rule)

On the mound for the Lady Knights Kayla Matarese (Cranston, RI) pitched very well.  Matarese started slowly giving up a run in the first and got into a rhythm before giving up one run in the last inning with the game already in hand.  In all, Matarese threw six strong innings allowing two runs, one earned on six hits with one walk while striking out five Dean batters.   At the plate Kayla helped her own cause going 3-3 with two doubles, a single, two runs scored with two stolen bases.  Coach Afonso commented: “Slow start for Kayla (Matarese) in the second game, but she got into a rhythm and offense also got off to a slow start but came around as game went on to fifth and sixth innings.” 

At the plate for the Lady Knights Izzy MarcAurele (Cranston, RI) had two hits three RBIs and two stolen bases followed by Devin Azulay who also had two hits, two RBIs, a run scored and a stolen base.  Also helping CCRI was Kate Carroll adding a hit, three walks and seven stolen bases, Ashley Olson also had three walks with, two stolen bases and two runs scored, while Nissa Perez added a hit, a sacrifice and five stolen bases.    

Coach Afonso added after the games: “Two solid wins, we are looking forward to a competitive weekend against two very good teams: Southern Maine CC and Orange County CC.”

The Lady Knights will be hosting two teams for split doubleheaders over the weekend: The Sea Wolves of Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) from Portland, ME and the Colts of Orange County Community College (OCCC) from Middletown, NY.  The weekend game schedule is: Saturday 12noon CCRI vs. SMCC, 2:00pm CCRI vs. OCCC, and 4:00pm SMCC vs. OCCC.  Sunday: 10:00am SMCC vs. OCCC, 12noon CCRI vs. OCCC and 2:00pm CCRI vs. SMCC.
