The CCRI Lady Knights softball team hosted the Huskies of Northeastern club team for their home opening doubleheader.  The Lady Knights defeated Northeastern 18-6 and 18-1 (both games were played without mercy rules).   With the two victories the Lady Knights improve to 4-3 on the season.

Game 1: CCRI-18 Northeastern-6
On the mound for the Lady Knights freshman Co-Captain Mel Iadeluca (Warwick, RI) got her first collegiate victory.  Iadeluca worked through a rough first two innings but settled into a rhythm to silence the Northeastern bats over the last five innings throwing seven innings giving up five earned runs while striking out two Northeastern batters.  At the plate Iadeluca helped her own cause and just missed hitting for the cycle. She smacked a 3-run homerun, added a triple and two singles to go 4-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored.

At the plate for the Lady Knights Sarah Siconio (Warwick, RI) was also swinging a hot bat going 4-5 with three doubles, a single, three RBIs, two stolen bases and a run scored, Co-Captain Ashley Olson (Coventry, RI) had two hits with four RBIs and a run scored and Kate Fowler (Warwick, RI) added three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored. Rounding out the CCRI offense was Michelle Sylvestre (Warwick, RI) with two hits, two RBIs and a run scored, Nissa Perez (Warwick, RI) added two hits with four runs scored and Leslie Peralta (Providence, RI) had a hit with three runs scored.

Game 2: CCRI-18 Northeastern-1
On the mound for the Lady Knights freshman Katie Paddock (Providence, RI) was dominant in her first home start, throwing seven strong innings allowing one earned run on seven hits striking out two and walking three northeastern batters to earn her first collegiate win.  Paddock was never in trouble working with a large lead and gave-up the lone run in the final inning when the game was all but over. At the plated she helped the CCRI offense with two walks a sacrifice, an RBI and a run scored.

At the plate for the Lady Knights Co-Captain Ashley Olson went 5-5 with two doubles, six RBIs, two runs scored and a stolen base, Izzy MarcAurele (Cranston, RI) went 4-5 with a double, three RBIs, three stolen bases and two runs scored and Co-Captain Mel Iadeluca went 4-5 with a double and RBI and four runs scored.  Also helping the Lady Knights’ offense was Michelle Sylvestre going 3-5 with three RBIs and Leslie Peralta added two triples and two runs scored.

Head Coach Liz Afonso commented after the doubleheader: “Mel Iadeluca had great a great day. She pitched well getting the win in the first game and with her hitting all day long, including her first homerun.  Ashley (Olson) did a great job stepping in to play shortstop when Nissa (Perez) had to come out. Kate Fowler also did an excellent job behind the plate.  We had a few people playing out of position due to injuries and all of them stepped-up in a big way.”

The next games for the Lady Knights will be Saturday the 24th when they will travel to Springfield, MA to play the Springfield JV squad for a doubleheader beginning at 12noon.
