Lady Knights explode for 5 in 8th to beat Tri-C 7-2!

03.15.12

Sylvestre Michelle Sylvestre

the Lady Knights concluded their Florida road trip at the National Training Center in Clermont on a high note playing the Challengers of Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C is a nickname for them).  The Lady Knights defeated the Challengers 7-2 in eight innings by the international tie-breaker.  With the victory the Lady Knights improve to 2-3 on the season, though the Lady Knights under .500 so far they are already starting better than last year when they went 0-6 in Florida so the outlook for the 2012 Lady Knights is still very good.

After a 2-2 tie for most of the game, the Lady Knights definitively won in the eighth inning by the international tie breaker*.  Tri-Captain Devin Azulay (Attleboro, MA) was on second base and was bunted over by Kate Fowler (Warwick, RI) begin the inning.  Tri-C tried to get Azulay out at third and both runners ended up being called safe.  With runners on first and third, Kayla Matarese (Cranston, RI) singled-in Azulay and moved Fowler to second to score the eventual game-winning run.  From there, the Lady Knights tacked-on four more runs collectively to complete the inning. The Lady Knights held Tri-C in the bottom of the eighth to win by the final score of 7-2.

On the mound Michelle Sylvestre (Warwick, RI) improved to 2-0 on the season, throwing five excellent innings, allowing just one hit and striking out five Challenger batters. Michelle also helped herself at the plate going 1-3 with an RBI and a run scored.  Sylvestre was relieved by Katie Paddock (Providence, RI) who threw two innings allowing not earned runs with a strikeout.  The Lady Knights got solid defensive play from Isabel “Izzy” MarcAurele (Cranston, RI) at second base.

Offensively the Lady Knights were led by Kate Carroll (Coventry, RI) went 2-5 with a double and a stolen base followed by Kate Fowler (Warwick, RI) went 2-4 with two runs scored. Kyrie Craig (Warwick, RI) was 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored.  Also helping the Lady Knights was Tri-Captain Ashley Olson (Coventry, RI) going 1-1 and Kayla Matarese was 1-2 with single an RBI and a run scored.

Lady Knights’ Head Coach Liz Afonso commented after the game: “We have been struggling offensively here in Florida and seemed to break it open in the 8th inning.  That felt very good.”
