Lady Knights muted by Mustangs 61-47

The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team concluded hosting the 2012 CCRI Basketball Invitational On Sunday by hosting the defending national Champion and currently No. 12 ranked Mustangs of Monroe College from New Rochelle, NY.  The Lady Knights lost to the Mustangs 61-47.  With the loss the Lady Knights fall to 11-8 on the season.

After playing very well on their four-game Florida road trip against top Division I opponents it seemed as though the Lady Knights would be poised to play the defending Champions.  The Lady Knights came out of the gates tentatively and never seemed to play with the same passion and enthusiasm they did last week versus much tougher competition.  The Lady Knights found themselves trailing 9-0 quickly and never seemed to recover.   CCRI went into halftime trailing 32-15. Head Coach Kate Lynch commented: "You can't execute this poorly or have a lack of focus like this against a team like Monroe."  In the second half the Lady Knights outscored the Mustangs 32-29 and had a couple flashes of what they are capable of but never really threatened the Mustangs as Monroe cruised to the 61-47 victory.

Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Krista Trenholm (Hope Valley, RI) scoring 12 points with eight rebounds a blocked shot and one steal. Helping Trenholm was Jess Randall (Warwick, RI) also scoring 12 with five rebounds a steal and an assist and Moe Plummer (Fairfield, CT) scored nine points and three rebounds. Rounding out the Lady Knights contributors was Co-Captain Jahira Smith (Norwich, CT) added seven points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals and Nyjah Porcher (New Britain, CT) with five points, three rebounds and two assists.

Coach Lynch added:   "That is the poorest I've seen this team play. It's the poorest I've seen this team execute. I feel we have taken a step backwards after improving so much while in Florida.  We have to get that passion and focus back if we are going to beat the better teams and accomplish our goal of making it to nationals."

The Lady Knights are back in action this Saturday the 21st when they will host the Colts of Orange County Community College from Middletown, NY at 1:00pm at the Vincent A. Cullen Fieldhouse located on the CCRI Knight Campus in Warwick.
