The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team began play in the 2012 CCRI Basketball Invitational on Saturday by hosting the Cougars of Genesee Community College from Batavia, NY.  The Lady Knights defeated the Cougars 74-55.  With the victory they improve to 11-7 on the season.

The Lady Knights and Cougars battled back-and-forth in the first part of the first half.  The Lady Knights were able to pull away as the half in the final 10 minutes of the half to take a 42-29 halftime lead.  The Lady Knights were led by Jess Randall (Warwick, RI) who scored 14 of her game-high 24 points in the first half.  In the second half the Lady Knights continued to control the tempo of the game and extended their lead to as many as 21 points before eventually winning the game 74-55.

The Lady Knights were led by Jess Randall charting her third double-double of the year scoring a game-high 24 points with 11 rebounds and adding two steals and two assists.  Randall shot an impressive 69% from the floor including a perfect 3-3 from behind the 3-point arc and also was 3-3 from the free throw line.  Also playing very well for CCRI was Ashley Welly (Coral Springs, FL) who also charted a double-double with 12 points and ripping down a game-high 15 rebounds and swiping three steals while Co-Captain Jahira Smith (Norwich, CT) who had an average game by her standards with 18 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals.  Rounding out the Lady Knights top performers was Nyjah Porcher (New Britain, CT) with six points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals, Krista Trenholm (Hope Valley, RI) added five points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots and Celina Rosa (Plantation, FL) added six points and two rebounds.

Head Coach Kate Lynch commented after the game: “I didn’t think we played all that well today. We had a lot of effort, but we made some mental mistakes on the defensive end. You can’t have those kinds of lapses all of the time. It will cost us eventually. We had a good overall effort. Everyone contributed. We were able to make quick substitutions without letdowns.”

The Lady Knights have no time to rest as they will face defending NJCAA Division II National Champions and currently ranked No. 12 Mustangs of Monroe College from New Rochelle, NY Sunday at 4:00pm at the Vincent A. Cullen Fieldhouse located on the CCRI Knight Campus in Warwick.
