Lady Knights lose to Palm Beach State 68-49
The CCRI Lady Knights began on their road trip to Florida where they will play four top-notch Division I programs. On Tuesday they faced the 1-2 Panthers of Palm Beach State College. The Lady Knights lost to the Panthers 68-49. With the loss the Lady Knights fall to 10-4 on the season.
The Lady Knights knew they would be in for a battle against a very tough Division I program with only one loss (12-1) who had the reigning Division I NJCAA player of the week in Me Me Ward. The Lady Knights trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half. However Jahira Smith (Norwich, CT) kept them in the game scoring 17 of her game-high 24 points and with the help of nine first half points from Jess Randall (Warwick, RI) and a last second 3-pointer from Nyjah Porcher (New Britain, CT) the Lady Knights trailed by six at the break 38-32. Palm Beach started the second half with defensive tenacity and tremendous execution on offense to extend their lead to as much as 24 points. The Lady Knights kept battling but they could not get much closer than 20 points eventually falling by the score of 68-49.
Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Jahira Smith with a game-high 24 points with nine rebounds, two steals and two assists. Helping smith was Jess Randall with 13 points including a 3-pointer, six rebounds, a blocked shot and a steal and Nyjah Porcher added 12 points, four steals and an assist.
Head Coach Kate Lynch commented after the game: "when you only have three players score, it's going to be a tough game to win. We need more players to step up. When we have more than 2 or 3 scorers, it puts a lot more pressure on the defense. We missed ten free throws if we had made those we lose by nine and possibly change the momentum of the game."
