Knights victorious over Westchester Vikings 75-70!
The No. 13 ranked (NJCAA Division II poll) CCRI Knights men’s basketball team hosted the Division I Vikings of Westchester Community College on Wednesday night at the Cullen Fieldhouse. The Knights defeated the Vikings 75-70 for their second consecutive win versus a Division I opponent. In addition, with the victory the Knights improve to 14-2 on the season.
This game was a compilation of scoring runs with the Knights jumping to a quick 20-8 advantage with 9:06 remaining in the first half. The Vikings went on a run of their own outscoring CCRI 23-11 to go up by two 33-31 with 2:14 left in the first half and took a 38-33 lead into the break. Desmond Williams (Torrington, CT) and Tri-Captain Trevor Mabry (Norwich, CT) paced the Knights with 11 points apiece in the first half. The Vikings Frank Blackwood paced Westchester with all 15 of his points in the first half including three 3-pointers. The second half saw Westchester extend their lead to seven going up 40-33 with 16:00 remaining in the game. Then came another Knights’ run, with 10:13 remaining CCRI cut the deficit to three points 51-48. The Knights took their first lead of the second half 54-53 on a 15-foot baseline jumper from Mabry off a drive and dish from point guard Bryan Yarce (Cranston, RI). From there CCRI went up 64-58 held off the Vikings playing strong zone defenses and executing their offense with patience and solid shot selection. CCRI had strong offensive balance in the second half with eight players making it into the scoring column for the Knights.
The Knights were led by Desmond Williams who scored a game-high 23 points with five rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot followed by Tri-Captain Trevor Mabry (Norwich, CT) who charted a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds while adding two blocked shots. Also having a big game for the Knights was Bryan Yarce who directed the Knights’ offense while scoring eight points and dishing out eight assists, Isaac Medeiros (Johnston, RI) added 10 points with three rebounds and two blocks and Roger Livramento (Central Falls, RI) only scored two points but led CCRI with 13 big rebounds against a humongous Westchester front-line led by 7’1” Petr Vinogradovas.
Head Coach Rick Harris commented after the victory: ““Good win for the young men tonight. As I told them, ‘It is nice to be able to get a win on a night when we did not play our best basketball.’ That is a sign of a team that has a chance to be good. Overall, I am proud of their back-to-back wins over Division I opponents.”
The Knights are back in action this Saturday January the 7th when they host the Vikings of Mercer County Community College at 2:00pm at the Vincent A. Cullen Fieldhouse located on the CCRI Knight Campus in Warwick.
Following the game the Knights will host “The CCRI High School Shoot Out” beginning at 4:30pm with Cranston East versus Fitch High School from Groton, CT followed by a 6:00pm match-up with North Kingstown versus Norwich Free Academy from Norwich, CT and at 7:30pm Rhode Island defending State Champions St. Raphael Academy takes on the defending Connecticut State Champion New London High School from New London, CT.
