Lady Knights upend UCAP 70-54!
The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team hosted the Pointers of the University of Connecticut at Avery Point on Tuesday for a Region XXI non-league game. The Lady Knights defeated the Pointers 70-54. With the victory the Lady Knights improve to 16-11 on the season and 6-1 in Region XXI play.
The Lady Knights controlled the game from the opening tip to the final buzzer. They quickly jumped out to a 10 point lead within the first ten minutes of the game which they extended to 22 by halftime with the score 44-22. The Pointers are a very tough division III team and well coached and though they played with only five players they battled their way back into the game to cut the lead to 13 a few times. However, that is a close as they would get as the Lady Knights cruised to the 70-54 victory.
Co-Captain Jahira Smith (Norwich, CT) led the Lady Knights charting a double-double consisting of 16 points with 11 assists while adding four steals and three rebounds and Jess Randall (Warwick, RI) had 15 points with five rebounds, five steals and two assists. Also helping CCRI was sophomore Lauren Masse (Woonsocket, RI) with nine points, including two 3-pointers and a career high two blocked shots, Nyjah Porcher (New Britain, CT) scored eight points with seven rebounds, three steals and three assists and Celina Rosa (Plantation, FL) played lock-down defense on UCAP’s Becca Pope for most of the game while adding four points, two assists, two steals and two rebounds. Rounding out the Lady Knights top performers was the frontcourt tandem of Krista Trenholm (Hope Valley, RI) and Jenna Ayala (Paterson, NJ) who combined for 13 points, 17 rebounds, three assists, a blocked shot and a steal and Moe Plummer (Fairfield, CT) added five points including a 3-pointer with three rebounds. UCAP’s Becca Pope led all scorers with 21 points.
Head Coach Kate Lynch commented after the game: “We were very sluggish all game. Defensively, we were not closing the lane. We gave up too many offensive rebounds. We talked about being consistent. We have to prepare for the playoffs in a week. We have to start focusing on the doing the little things day and day out. Those are what win you basketball games.”
The Lady Knights return to action Thursday at 6:30pm when they will host the Cougars of Manchester Community College their final regular season game. Thursday night will be sophomore night for CCRI’s one sophomore Lauren Masse who will be playing her final game at the Vincent A. Cullen Fieldhouse. In addition, the Lady Knights will be decked-out in Pink in honor of “Play 4 Kay” Night. They will be collecting donations which will be donated to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund 501© (3). Since 2007 The Kay Yow Cancer Fund has raised $1.7 million and is committed to finding an answer in the fight against women’s cancers.
