Lady Knights fall to DI power ASA 57-46
The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team traveled to Brooklyn, NY to play the highly touted 20-3 Division I Avengers of ASA College. The Lady Knights fell to the Avengers 57-46. With the loss the Lady Knights fall to 15-11 on the season.
CCRI played a strong first half. With the score 22-25 and ten seconds to go in the first half, Lady Knights’ Co-Captain Jahira Smith (Norwich, CT) tied the game with a three from the top of the key. Giving the Lady Knights tremendous momentum going into the locker room tied 25-25 at the half.
CCRI had two key players with four fouls with 15 minutes left to go in the second half which hurt them offensively. Head Coach Kate Lynch commented: “We never seemed to gain any momentum after that. We traded baskets with them and you can’t do that against a team like that. When you get up on a Division I team, you have to put them away and we didn’t do that today.” The Lady Knights out-rebounded the bigger Avengers squad for the game 46-39 but could not get key offensive rebounds in the final five minutes which allowed the Avengers to escape with the 57-46 victory. Neither team shot particularly well from the floor: CCRI 25% and ASA 32% which made the rebounds even more important. In addition, ASA only shot 39% from the free throw line going 12-31 but the Lady Knights could not capitalize against the Division I power.
CCRI Co-Captain Jahira Smith led all scorers with 19 points, pulled-down nine rebounds with two assists and two steals. Jess Randall (Warwick, RI) finished with 11 points and nine rebounds and Nyjah Porcher (New Britain, CT) chipped-in with eight points, 12 rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Coach Lynch added: “When you give up 17 offensive rebounds, 12 in the second half, and eight in the last five minutes of the game, you can’t expect to win.”
The Lady Knights return to action this Tuesday February 21st when they will host the Pointers of UConn-Avery Point at 6:00pm in a Region XXI non-league game at the Vincent A. Cullen Fieldhouse.
