Lady Knights’ rally but fall to Monroe 75-69
The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team traveled to New Rochelle, NY to take on the defending national champion and No. 12 ranked (NJCAA DII poll) Monroe College Mustangs. CCRI fell to the Mustangs 75-69. With the loss the Lady Knights drop to 14-10 on the season.
CCRI came out flat in the first five minutes of the game trailing 17-4 to the Mustangs. Head Coach Kate Lynch commented: “We came out flat. That is something we talked about. We simply cannot do that against a team like Monroe…we can’t do that period.” After a timeout, the Lady Knights rallied to pull within five points. It was a back and forth track meet with each team trading baskets. Coach Lynch added: “Trading baskets won’t win you a basketball game. CCRI trailed 43-34 at halftime.
In the second half the Lady Knights pulled within four points with seven minutes remaining. Coach Lynch later added: “We started to calm down and take better shots in the second half.” CCRI outscored the Mustangs in the second half, but it was not enough as the Mustangs held on for the 75-69 victory.
Co-Captain Jahira Smith (Norwich, CT) led all scorers with 26 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Smith was helped by Krista Trenholm (Hope Valley, RI) finished with 16 points and nine rebounds and four blocked shots and Jess Randall (Warwick, RI) finished with a double-double netting 13 points and ripping down 10 rebounds. Rounding out the Lady Knights top performers was Jenna Ayala (Paterson, NJ) with six points, six rebounds and a blocked shot while Nyjah Porcher (New Britain, CT) dished out eight assists with six rebounds, two steals and two points.
The Lady Knights’ next game will be this Saturday February 11th when they will host the Cougars from Manchester Community College for a Region XXI non-league game.
