Lady Knights Sink Navy Prep 64-39!
The CCRI Lady Knights’ basketball team traveled to Newport, RI to take on the Rams of the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS). CCRI came away with a 64-39 victory. With the win the Lady Knights improve to 14-9 on the season.
The Lady Knights shooting only 32% from the floor for the game was probably the biggest story for the game. CCRI led 29-13 at halftime after a 5-0 run to close the half by NAPS. The Lady Knights’ shooting woes continued in the second half. CCRI concentrated on attacking the basket and getting to the rim. Head Coach Kate Lynch commented: “Our basket felt like it had a lid on the rim. We could not buy a basket. A lot of our shots went in and out. It was frustrating, but we battled through it.”
The Lady Knights were led by Co-Captain Lauren Masse (Woonsocket, RI) who finished with 17 points including five 3-pointers from behind the arc and two assists. Helping Masse was Ashley Welly (Coral Springs, FL) recorded a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Krista Trenholm (Hope Valley, RI) chipped in with 13 points and eight rebounds while adding a blocked shot, two steals and an assist, Jenna Ayala (Paterson, NJ) grabbed 12 rebounds including 10 in the first half while adding two blocked shots and Co-Captain Jahira Smith(Norwich, CT) added seven points, nine assists, six rebounds and a blocked shot.
Coach Lynch added: “When you’re having trouble hitting from the outside, you have to get to the rim and make a play.”
The Lady Knights are back in action this Saturday when they travel to Monroe Athletic Complex in New Rochelle, NY to play the No. 12 ranked (NJCAA DII poll) defending national champion Mustangs of Monroe College at 2:00pm.
