Knights beat Bristol CC 82-64!
The No. 11 ranked (NJCAA DII poll) CCRI Knights men’s basketball team traveled to Fall River, MA to play the Bees of Bristol Community College in a Region XXI non-league game. The Knights defeated the Bees 82-64. With the victory the Knights improve to 24-4 on the season and 11-1 in Region XXI play.
The Knights were playing their fourth game in seven days and were without sophomore double-double machine Roger Livramento (Central Falls, RI) so they had to dig deeper into their bench but once again the always improving Knights found a way to come home with a convincing victory. Jeff Schmeltz (Burrillville, RI) was one of the players to really step-up in this game though he scored just four points he ripped down a game-high 11 rebounds while being a force in the paint blocking a career-high eight Bees’ shots. The Knights raced-out to a 42-25 halftime lead and cruised from there with their lead never going below double-digits. Bristol CC was a game group including four Rhode Islanders but they could not overcome the superior inside play of the larger and more athletic Knights. The Knights coasted to the 82-64 victory. Their 24th of the season and just two away from tying the program record of 26 wins (set in ’77 and ’90).
Leading the way for the Knights was Desmond Williams (Torrington, CT) who scored 22 points, including two 3-pointers, with five rebounds, four assists and three steals while only playing half of the second half in foul trouble. Co-Captain Trevor Mabry (Norwich, CT) had a very efficient shooting night going 7-9 from the floor and 4-5 from the free throw line to score 18 points with eight rebounds, three assists and a blocked shot and Isaac Medeiros (Johnston, RI) who got he start for Livramento scored 13 points with nine rebounds, three assists, two steals and three blocked shots. Also helping the Knights was point guard Bryan Yarce (Cranston, RI) scoring 10 points with six assists and a steal, Jeff Schmeltz with four points 11 rebounds and eight blocked shots and Co-Captain Chris Canino (Hartford, CT) added eight points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Head Coach Rick Harris commented after the victory: “Solid road win for our guys. Bristol has played some solid ball as of late with recent wins over Massasoit, Roxbury and Gateway. Our guys stepped-up in a big way with the absence of their court leader Roger Livramento to find new ways to get the job done and get the important Region victory. They played with confidence, passion and as a team. That is always a formula for success. It sure makes our job as coaches easy when the entire team puts each other first.
The Knights are back in action Thursday when they travel to Franklin, MA to play Region XXI rival Dean College at 6:00pm in a Region XXI league game.
