No. 11 ranked Knights win 23rd over Mass Bay 76-59!
The No. 11 ranked (NJCAA DII poll) CCRI Knights hosted the Buccaneers of Mass Bay Community College from Wellesley Hills, MA on Saturday for a Region XXI non-league game. The Knights defeated the Buccaneers 76-59. With the victory the Knights improve to 23-4 on the season and 9-1 in Region XXI play. In addition, the Knights are just three wins from tying the program record for victories with 26 set in 1977 and 1990.
This Region XXI match-up was a series of scoring runs by both teams. The Knights jumped out to a quick and emphatic 15-0 lead before Mass Bay dug deep and went on a 19-2 run of their own to lead 19-17. With Mass bay leading 27-30 Desmond Williams (Torrington, CT) sank one of his team-high three 3-pointers to tie the score 30-30 with about a minute left. Both teams went into the break tied 32-32.
The Knights began the second half with a 14-2 run to take another double-digit lead over the Buccaneers with the score 46-34. The second half run was spearheaded by Roger Livramento (Central Falls, RI) who scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half. The inside-outside attack of Williams and Livramento was too much for the Mass Bay to overcome as the Knights maintained a double-digit lead throughout the rest of the game to win 76-59.
Desmond Williams led all scorers with 27 points, including three 3-pointers, with six steals, five assists and five rebounds. Roger Livramento dominated the inside charting his fifth consecutive double-double scoring 20 points including 18 in the second half while ripping down 13 rebounds adding four steals, two blocked shots two assists and a charge taken. Also playing very well for the Knights was Bryan Yarce (Cranston, RI) scoring 10 points with eight assists, three steals and a blocked shot, Co-Captain Trevor Mabry (Norwich, CT) with 11 points, seven rebounds and three steals and Jeff Schmeltz (Burrillville, RI) added seven rebounds and three points.
Head Coach Rick Harris commented after the game: “The guys battled hard for 40 minutes today and they needed to because Mass Bay is an outstanding well coached team. Our guys sense that we always need to be ready because we have once again become a team with a target on our back. They have earned that with great preparation, team play and determination to become the best that they can be. They are a pleasure for our coaches to work with.”
The Knights are back in action Monday the 13th when they travel to Fall River, MA to play the Bees of Bristol Community College at 7:00pm for a Region XXI non-league game.
