Double-doubles lift Knights over Gateway 96-81!
The No. 11 ranked (NJCAA DII poll ) CCRI Knights men’s basketball team traveled to New Haven, CT to play the top 20 ranked (NJCAA DIII poll) 15-3 Lions of Gateway Community College in the Region XXI non-league game. The Knights defeated the Lions 96-81. With the victory the Knights improve to 21-4 on the season and 8-1 in Region XXI play. With just five more wins the Knights will tie a program record for victories in a season with 26, which a great accomplishment for a program with over 45 years of rich history.
This was another exciting interdivisional match-up between top 20 teams from Region XXI. Both teams traded baskets for the first half as CCRI used their superior athleticism to score from the inside and the outside while the Lions utilized hot 3-point shooting with eight long-range bombs made in the first half to stay in the game. CCRI went into the break with a slim 48-46 lead.
In the second half the Knights came out in their trademark 1-3-1 half-court trap to slow down the Lions’ hot shooting. The strategy worked as Gateway seemed confused with the new defense allowing the Knights to outscore the Lions 25-15 in the second half to take a 73-61 lead with 9:15 remaining in the game. From there the Knights took advantage of their superior inside strength to stay ahead and secure the 96-81 victory.
The Knights had three player chart double-doubles in this exciting Region XXI showdown. Leading the way for the Knights was Roger Livramento (Central Falls, RI) charting his ninth double-double of the season with a career-high 30 points and ripping down a game-high 18 rebounds adding three assists and a blocked shot followed by the NJCAA Division II Player of the Week Desmond Williams (Torrington, CT) who scored 25 points with 11 rebounds. Also putting up a double-double was Co-Captain Trevor Mabry (Norwich, CT) with 16 points, 12 rebounds and two blocked shots while Bryan Yarce (Cranston, RI) ran the offense flawlessly scoring seven points while dishing out a career-high tying 11 assists adding two steals an offensive charge taken and a blocked shot. Rounding out the Knights’ attack was Isaac Medeiros (Johnston, RI) who chipped in with six points while pulling down 14 big rebounds and Branden Barbosa (East Providence, RI) added eight points, four rebounds and three assists.
The Knights are back in action Thursday the 9th at 7:00pm when they will host the No. 14 ranked (NJCAA DII Poll) Warriors of Massasoit Community College from Brockton, MA in a very important Region XXI league game. The game will also be taped for Cox Sports 3 and will air Thursday February 16th at 7:00pm on channels 3 and 1003 on Cox Cable in Rhode Island.
