02.20.12

Cabral Brendan Cabral

The CCRI Knights baseball team embarked on their first road trip to North Carolina to kick-off the 2012 season.  The Knights traveled to Greensboro, NC to play Division I powerhouse Guilford Technical Community College for a doubleheader.  The Knights fell in the first game 5-1 but then rallied to defeat the Titans of Guilford Tech 9-4.  With the doubleheader split the Knights begin the season 1-1.

  Game 1

CCRI 1 Guilford Tech 5

After a 15-hour long bus trip to Greensboro, NC and only three hours of sleep at the hotel, the Knights opened their season against a very strong Division 1 Guilford Tech baseball team. The Knights battled hard to keep the game close but failed to provide much offensive power as they stranded four runners in scoring position. Knights’ Co-Captain Chris Peralta (Providence, RI) pitched very well, going 4 1/3 innings in his first start of the season. Kevin Dale (Warwick, RI) relived Peralta and pitched an inning and a third of scoreless relief. The Knights were led offensively by Freshman Nick Coro(North Providence, RI) who had an RBI single in the fifth inning.  The Knights got good enough pitching to win the game but could not piece together any rallies to score runs to earn the victory.

  Game 2

CCRI 9 Guilford Tech 4

The Knights offense woke up in game two of the doubleheader as the team exploded for 16 hits and nine runs in seven innings. The team received strong pitching efforts from Brendan Cabral (Scituate, RI) and Connor Gleason (North Stonington, CT) to notch the first win of the season. Starting pitcher Cabral threw four solid innings and helped his own cause offensively with two hits while Gleason came on in relief going three solid innings to pick up his first collegiate victory.

The offensive explosion began in the first inning and never seemed to let up as the Knights pounded the ball all over the diamond. The Knights’ attack was led by three of their sophomores: Marc Dorsi (West Haven, CT) had three hits and three RBI’s, Jamale Horn (Hoover, AL) also had three hits and three RBI’s while Co-Captain Tom Gavitt (Stonington, CT) added three hits and two RBI’s. Rounding out the Knights’ attack was Freshmen Dylan Gracia (Middletown, RI) and Chris Girard (Stonington, CT) added two hits apiece in their first collegiate games. The Knights were scheduled to play a third game versus Guilford Tech. but it was rained out.

The Knights were scheduled to play Monday versus the College of Albemarle but the field was unplayable.  The College of Albemarle games will be played Tuesday part of a doubleheader. In addition, the location of the games has been moved to Chowan University in Murfreesboro, NC beginning at 12 noon.
