Lady Knights deny Dean 75-54!
The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team hoisted the Bulldogs of Dean College on Wednesday for their home opener and first Region XXI league game. The Lady Knights defeated the Bulldogs 75-54. With the victory they improve to 5-2 on the season and 2-0 in Region XXI play.
The Lady Knights got off to a slow start playing in their first home game against a very tough Region XXI opponent that came in with an impressive 7-2 record. Both teams traded leads in the first half but the Lady Knights gathered themselves to go into halftime with a slim 34-30 lead. CCRI was led in the first half by Co-Captain Jahira Smith (Norwich, CT) and Treedy Ward (Boynton Beach, FL) who scored 11 points apiece. In the second half the Lady Knights ratcheted-up their defense to create which led transition baskets. “We talked about creating offense off of our defense and we were able to do that in the second half. Our pressure was more consistent and we made much smarter decisions in transition.” commented Head Coach Kate Lynch. CCRI’s tremendous pressure defense combined with 16 second half points from Nyjah Porcher (New Britain, CT) and 12 from Ward helped the Lady Knights pull away for a hard-fought 75-54 victory.
The Lady Knights were led by Jahira Smith (Norwich, CT) who charted her first career triple-double with 18 points, 11assists and 11 rebounds to go with five steals. Smith has been on tear to begin her CCRI career charting at least a double-double in all but one game. She was helped by Nyjah Porcher who charted her first double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds and Treedy Ward led the Lady Knights in scoring with 23 points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal. Rounding out the Lady Knights top performers was Jenna Ayala(Paterson, NJ) with 10 rebounds to go with 2 points, Jess Randall (Warwick, RI) added eight rebounds and four points and Monique (“Moe”) Plummer (Fairfield, CT) added eight points including two 3-pointers and four steals.
Coach Lynch commented after the game: “We got off to a very slow start tonight. We made some poor decisions defensively and we just couldn’t find the basket on offense. Jahira (Smith), Nyjah (Porcher), and Jenna (Ayala)combined for 35 rebounds tonight and that was huge for us. Everyone else chipped in. When we are able to get contributions from multiple people, it really helps us out.
The Lady Knights next games will be this weekend when they travel to Batavia, NY to pay in the Genesee Community College in the Cougar Holiday Classic. Saturday they will face the hosting Genesee CC Cougars Saturday at 4pm and Niagara Community College Sunday at 11:00am.
