The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team traveled to Massasoit Community College in Brockton, MA on Thursday for their first Region XXI contest of the year. The Lady Knights defeated the Warrior of Massasoit CC 70-54 in an interdivision match-up. With the victory the Lady Knights improve to 4-2 on the season and 1-0 in Region XXI play.

The Lady Knights came out very cold shooting just 24% from the floor in the first half and found themselves down at halftime 37-34. However, the Lady Knights made up for their poor shooting percentage by switching up their defensive scheme and effort at halftime and sinking a season-high 11 3-pointers on the game. CCRI’s hot outside shooting helped them outscore the Warriors 36-17 in the second half to run away from Massasoit down the stretch and win by the comfortable 70-54 margin.

Co-Captain Jahira Smith (Norwich, CT) led all scorers with another monster double-double featuring 24 points, including three 3-pointers, to go along with 15 rebounds, five steals and four assists. Smith was helped by fellow Co-Captain Lauren Masse (Woonsocket, RI) who added with 11 points including three 3-pointers. Also helping the Lady Knights’ effort was Treedy Ward(Boynton, Beach, FL) chipping in 11 points on the night also with three 3-pointers while adding three assists, two steals and eight deflections, Nyjah Porcher (New Britain, CT) scored nine points with six rebounds and three steals while Jenna Ayala (Paterson, NJ) added six points, eight rebounds, four blocked shots and four deflections.

Head Coach Kate Lynch commented after the game: "We certainly did not shoot well from the floor tonight. What made it worse was our defensive effort in the first half. Our pressure and intensity were poor. We switched up defensively in the second half which seemed to help us gain a little momentum. Our shooting still was off, but we managed to create some points off of defensive hustle plays."

The Lady Knights return to action Wednesday December 7th when they host Region XXI rival, Dean College from Franklin, MA at 6:00pm at the Vin Cullen Fieldhouse located on the CCRI Knight Campus in Warwick.
