The No. 13 ranked (NJCAA Division II basketball poll) CCRI Knights began hosting their first ever Holiday Classic on Wednesday night.  Game one featured the Bees of Bristol Community College of Fall River, MA versus the Division I Knights of Globe Institute from New York, NY the second game featured the Golden Lions of Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC) from North Branch, NJ versus the hosting Knights of the Community College of Rhode Island.   Globe Institute Knights defeated Bristol CC 72-57 to advance to the Holiday Classic championship game while the CCRI Knights defeated the Golden Lions 83-62 to improve to 12-2 on the season and advance to the Holiday Classic championship game.  The consolation game of Bristol CC vs. RVCC will be played at 5:30pm.  The Holiday Classic championship game between Globe Institute and CCRI will be played at 7:30pm at the Vincent A. Cullen Fieldhouse located on the CCRI Knight Campus in Warwick.

The Knights and Golden Lions battled evenly in the first half with the Knights going into the break with a slim 33-30 lead.  After some halftime adjustments the Knights came out with tremendous defensive pressure and fast-paced attack to blitz the Golden Lions.  With this energy the Knights started the half with a 6-0 run and extended their lead with a 26-10 run to take a 59-40 lead with 10:30 left in the game.  The Knights maintained this lead for the rest of the game as they coasted to the 83-62 victory.

The Knights were led by Desmond Williams (Torrington, CT) who had a game-high 21 points with five rebounds, three blocked shots, two assists and a steal followed by Trevor Mabry (Norwich, CT) charting a double-double consisting of 14 points, 11 rebounds while adding two blocked shots and two steals.  Also helping the Knights was Isaac Medeiros (Johnston, RI) who scored all of his 14 points in the second half while adding eight rebounds, three steals and a blocked shot and Bryan Yarce (Cranston, RI) had another excellent game with nine points, a season-high 10 assists adding three steals and four rebounds.  Rounding out the Knights attack was Roger Livramento (Central Falls, RI) with eight points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots while Co-Captain Nick Maglio (Barrington RI) and Steve Bevilacqua (West Greenwich, RI) combined for three clutch 3-pointers and three steals in the second half to help secure victory for the Knights.

Head Coach Rick Harris commented after the victory: “The Coaches sweated-out a lethargic first half by all of us. The second half is how we want to play, together and with energy. Trevor’s (Mabry) charge and Chris Canino’s loose ball save got us back playing how we need to.  It’s fun to coach when everyone is bringing their individual energies.”

The First ever CCRI Holiday classic continues tonight, Thursday the 29th beginning at 5:30pm with Bristol CC vs. Raritan Valley CC in the consolation game followed by the championship game between the Division I Knights of Globe Institute and the CCRI Knights at 7:30pm at the Vincent A. Cullen Fieldhouse located on the CCRI Knight Campus in Warwick.
