Knights fall to undefeated St. Thomas More 81-59
The No. 13 (NJCAA Division II basketball poll) CCRI Knights men’s basketball team traveled to Oakdale, CT to play the No. 18 ranked (five star Basketball high School rankings 12/14/11) Chancellors of St. Thomas More (12-0) in a scrimmage. The Knights lost to the chancellors 81-59. The game was a scrimmage for the Knights so their record remains 11-2 on the season.
The undefeated Chancellors used their superior size and speed to jump ahead of the Knights with a quick 32-14 lead in the first eight minutes of play. The Chancellors were led by the hot 3-point shooting of AJ English who scored a game-high 19 points on the game which led them to a 53-29 halftime lead. The Knights were able to outscore the Chancellors in the second half 30-28 but it was not enough to overcome St. Thomas More as they went on to win 81-59.
The Knights were led by Desmond Williams (Torrington, CT) who scored 13 points including three 3-pointers with two rebounds and Isaac Medeiros (Johnston, RI) who score 11 points and two rebounds. Center Jeff Schmeltz (Burrillville, RI) added nine points and team-high six rebounds and two blocked shots while Bryan Yarce (Cranston, RI) dished out seven assists with four steals and a blocked shot and scoring three and Roger Livramento (Central Falls, RI) added five blocked shots while scoring four points with four rebounds. The Chancellors’ AJ English and Ky Howard led all scorers with 19 points apiece.
Head Coach Rick Harris commented after the scrimmage: “This scrimmage was a good opportunity to play a high caliber team. But our main priority now is to concentrate on final exams and getting healthy. We look forward to the break and getting back in action in the Holiday Classic.”
The Knights next game will be Wednesday December 28th when they host Raritan Valley Community College at 7:30pm as part of the CCRI Holiday Classic following the game of Globe Institute versus Bristol Community College who will play at 5:30pm. The winners of those games will meet 7:30 pm on Thursday the 29th for the Tournament Championship and the losers will meet at 5:30pm in the consolation game. The Tournament will be played at the Vincent A. Cullen Fieldhouse located on the CCRI Knight Campus in Warwick.
