The CCRI Knights men’s basketball team traveled to Batavia, NY to compete in the Genesee Community College Cougar Holiday Classic.  On Saturday the No. 8 ranked (NJCAA Division II poll) Knights faced the hosting Cougars of Genesee Community College.  The Knights defeated the Cougars 76-70.  With the victory the Knights improve to 10-1 on the season.

The Knights came into the Cougar Holiday Classic without their full complement of players missing starter Rogerio Livramento (Central Falls, RI) due to family commitment, Captain Nick Maglio (Barrington, RI) and Branden Barboza (East Providence, RI) due to injuries.  However, the Knights’ supporting cast was up to the task.

The Knights took a 41-29 halftime lead led by Desmond Williams’ (Torrington, CT) nine points and eight from Isaac Medeiros (Johnston, RI).  The Cougars would not fold in their Holiday Classic as they battled back to tie the score 61-61 with 5:35 left in the game. Bryan Yarce (Cranston, RI) answered the call for the Knights scoring a lay-up  and adding two free throws to give CCRI a 65-61 lead with 4:50 left.  But with just 1:18 remaining the Knights’ lead was just 69-68.  Medeiros answered for the Knights this time with a basket assisted by Keith Lackerson (Brooklyn, NY) and free throws by Yarce and Lackerson sealed the victory. The victory marks the 100th the Head Coach Rick Harris’ CCRI coaching career.

The Knights were led by Isaac Medeiros with a team-high 22 points to go with eight rebounds followed by Desmond Williams who added 17 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals.  Also helping the Knights was Anthony Henry (Danbury, CT) with a double-double consisting of11 points and 12 rebounds and four blocked shots while Bryan Yarce added eight points, including some clutch free throws, three assist, three steals and three rebounds and Tri- Captain point guard Josh Perry (South Kingstown, RI) played very well scoring four points with three rebounds.

Head Coach Rick Harris commented after the big rad victory “Great road victory over one of our big northeast rivals.  The win was a credit to our TEAM as other guys like (Isaac) MedeirosBrandon (Strawn), and Josh Perry stepped-up and had fine ball games in place of some of our regulars who were out tonight for various reasons.  We will need to put forth the same effort on Sunday when we take on Niagara Community College.”

The Knights take on Niagara CC 1:00pm Sunday in day two of the Genesee Cougar Holiday Classic.
