Lady Knights down Dean, Azulay sets career K record!

The CCRI Lady Knights softball team traveled to Longley field in Franklin, MA to play Region XXI rival Dean College for a Region XXI league doubleheader.  The Lady Knights defeated the Bulldogs of Dean College 10-2 and 14-2.  With the Doubleheader sweep the Lady Knights improve to 21-7 on the season and 8-0 in Region XXI play.
 
Game 1 CCRI-10 Dean-2
On the mound for the Lady Knights Michelle Sylvestre (Warwick, RI) improved to 7-1 on the season while lowering her ERA to just 1.68 with an impressive seven inning outing. Sylvestre allowed just one hit and no walks while striking out eight Bulldog batters.  At the plate she helped her own cause as well with two hits including a double with two runs scored.
 
Offensively for the Lady Knights Nissa Perez (Warwick, RI) led the way with three hits including a double a home run with two RBIs and two runs scored followed by Kayla Matarese (Cranston, RI) who had four hits with a double, two RBIs, a run scored and two stolen bases. Also helping the CCRI attack was Tri-Captains Devin Azulay (Attleboro, MA) with two hits an RBI a run scored and a stolen base and Ashley Olson (Coventry, RI) with two hits, an RBI and two sacrifices.  Rounding-out the Lady Knights’ attack was Izzy MarcAurele (Cranston, RI) with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI and Kate Carroll (Coventry, RI) with two hits including a double with two runs scored.       
 
Game 2: CCRI- 14 Dean- 2
On the mound for the Lady Knights Tri-Captain Devin Azulay became set the CCRI career strikeout record with 186 Career K’s while picking-up her eight win of the year with a dominant five inning performance.  Azulay allowed no earned runs on three hits with six strikeouts.  Azulay had 107 strikeouts as a freshman and has 79 so far this year giving her 186 surpassing the 182 strikeouts set by Marian Long over the 2009 and 2010 seasons.  She wasn’t done there as she added three hits including two doubles with an RBI and three runs scored.  The two doubles currently gives her the Career Doubles mark of 27 just ahead of teammate and fellow Tri-Captain Ashley Olson who has 25.
 
Offensively for CCRI Ashley Olson added three hits including a triple with an RBI and three runs scored.  For her career Olson has extended her Career record to 94 RBIs and is just four hits from tying Jess Borden’s 110 Career Hits mark with her 106 career hits.  Also helping CCRI was Nissa Perez with two hits a double and a triple with a run scored, Tri-Captain Mel Iadeluca (Warwick, RI) had two hits including a double with two runs scored and Kayla Matarese ended her 5-6 day with a two-run home run.  Rounding out the CCRI attack were Kate Carroll, Izzy MarcAurele, Leslie Peralta (Providence, RI) and Katie Paddock (Providence, RI) each added a hit apiece.
 
Head Coach Liz Afonso commented after the games:  “Two more big Region wins today.  The girls played very well and the offense was an even attack from all.  We will be looking for two more Region XXI wins today at Massasoit.”
 
The Lady Knights travel to Brockton, MA on Thursday to play the Warriors of Massasoit Community College for their final Region XXI league doubleheader beginning at 3:00pm.
