Lady Knights sweep Massasoit as Olson gets 100th hit!

04.13.12

Olson Ashley Olson

The CCRI Lady Knights softball team hosted the Warriors of Massasoit Community College for a Region XXI league doubleheader on Thursday.  The Lady Knights defeated the Warriors 4-0 and 5-2.  With the two victories the Lady Knights improve to 19-4 on the season and 6-0 in Region XXI play.

Game 1: CCRI- 4 Massasoit CC- 0
On the mound for the Lady Knights Michelle Sylvestre (Warwick, RI) thoroughly baffled the Massasoit line-up.  Sylvestre threw seven shutout innings while allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out six Warrior batters.  With the victory Sylvestre improves to a perfect 6-0 on the season while lowering her ERA to a minuscule 1.512 in the process. A performance the Lady Knights really needed as she battled Rilee Burt from Massasoit who registered 10 strikeouts in the first game.  But Sylvestre was up to the task shutting out the Warriors over seven strong innings

At the plate for the Lady Knights Kayla Matarese (Cranston, RI) led the way with two hits, a single and a double, with two RBIs and Izzy MarcAurele (Cranston, RI) going 2-2 with a single and double, two runs scored and an RBI.  Also helping the CCRI offensive attack was Tri-Captain Ashley Olson (Coventry, RI) had hits, an RBI and a run scored, Kate Fowler (Warwick, RI) with two hits and Sarah Siconio (Warwick RI) added a hit.

Game 2: CCRI- 5 Massasoit CC- 2
On the mound for the Lady Knights Tri-Captain Devin Azulay (Attleboro, MA) was major contributor both offensively and on the mound.  Azulay threw seven strong innings allowing no earned runs on five hits, walking two and striking out nine Warrior batters.  The only two runs were scored in the first inning as Ashley Olson had a Warrior runner “dead to rights” with a pick-off and uncorked a rocket to first only to have the ball get by Katie Paddock (Providence, RI) and then Natalie Lewis (Providence, RI) in right field that scored two unearned runs.  At the plate Azulay had two hits, a single and a double with a sacrifice and three RBIs to lead the Lady Knights offensively.

Other offensive contributors for CCRI were Kate Carroll (Coventry, RI) with two hits and a run scored, Nissa Perez (Warwick, RI) had a hit, two walks, two runs scored and two stolen bases.  Setting yet another milestone in her prolific career was Tri-Captain Ashley Olson who added a triple and RBI and a run scored.  The triple was Olson’s 100th hit as a Lady Knight she is only the second to have 100 hits at CCRI behind Jess Borden who finished her CCRI career with 110 hits.  Olson also holds two other CCRI career records: doubles with 25 surpassing Nicole Kufel’s 22 and RBIs with 90 surpassing Amanda Ward who had 63, Olson looks to become the first Lady Knight to reach 100 RBIs for her career.    Rounding-out the CCRI attack was Kayla Matarese, Kyrie Craig (Warwick, RI) and Katie Paddock who each added a hit apiece.

The Lady Knights had a very long and tough weekend lined-up as they travel to Mercyhurst North East in North East, PA.  On Saturday they will face Lakeland Community College from Kirtland, OH at 1pm, No. 7 ranked (NJCAA DII poll) Owens Community College from Toledo, OH at 3:00pm, OH and No. 17 ranked Mercyhurst North East at 5:00pm. On Sunday Lakeland at 10am, Owens at 12noon and Mercyhurst at 2pm and on Monday, Mercyhurst at 10:00am.
