Lady Knights lose to Orange in 8, beat S. Maine in 5!

Matarese Kayla Matarese

The CCRI Lady Knights’ softball team continued hosting the Colts of Orange County CC and The Sea Wolves of Southern Maine CC on Sunday for another split doubleheader.  In the first game of the day Orange County CC beat southern Maine 21-1.  In the second game of the day, the Lady Knights fell to the Colts 12-6 in eight innings but rebounded to defeat Southern Maine CC 8-0 in the final game of the day.  With the split the Lady Knights win streak is snapped at nine games but they improve to 11-4 on the season.
Game 1 Orange County CC- 21 SMCC- 1
Game 2 CCRI- 6 Orange County CC- 12 in eight innings
After a spectacular outing on Saturday from Co-Captain Devin Azulay (Attleboro, MA) and Amber Corrigan from Orange County CC when they pitched the bats silent, this game would be very offensive-minded in contrast.  The score was 5-3 Orange County after the first inning.  CCRI was not playing their best defense and quickly gave-up five runs but Azulay quickly got them back into the game with a 3-run homer in the bottom of the inning making the score 5-3.  Orange would go up 6-3 in the top of the fourth but once again the Lady Knights would answer scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the score 6-6.  The score stayed that way until the game went into extra innings with the international tie-breaker.  In the eighth the CCRI made some mental errors which allowed extra base runners, before you knew it Orange capitalized and made them pay scoring six runs in the inning and CCRI could not answer losing by the 12-6 final.
On the mound Co-Captain Devin Azulay pitched much better than her pitching line would reflect allowing eight earned runs over eight innings while still striking out 10 Colt’s batters.  At the plate she helped the Lady Knights’ offense with two hits including a 3-run homerun.  Azulay is currently ranked No. 33 by the NJCAA in strikeouts with 40 strikeouts in 40 innings good for one per inning.
Also helping the CCRI offense was Sarah Siconio (Warwick, RI) going 3-4 with a double and Kate Carroll (Coventry, RI) added two hits, including a double, two RBIs, two runs scored and a stolen base.  Rounding out the CCRI attack was Nissa Perez (Warwick, RI) with two hits, including a double and two runs scored, Kayla Matarese (Cranston, RI) added a hit and an RBI and Michelle Sylvestre (Warwick, RI) added a hit a run scored and drew two walks.
Game 3: CCRI- 8 SMCC- 0
On the mound for the Lady Knights Kayla Matarese tossed her first collegiate perfect game. Matarese threw five innings while striking out four Sea Wolves’ batters.  Matarese is currently ranked No. 25 by the NJCAA in pitching with an impressive 1.17 ERA with a 2-0 record allowing just three earned runs all year with 13 strikeouts in 18 innings pitched.
At the plate for CCRI Co-Captain Devin Azulay had two hits with two RBIs and a run scored followed by Co-Captain Ashley Olson (Coventry, RI) added a double, two RBIs and a run scored.  Also helping the Lady Knights to victory was Nissa Perez (Warwick, RI) with a double and two RBIs, Leslie Peralta (Providence, RI) added two hits and an RBI and Kate Fowler added a hit, two runs scored and an RBI, while Kate Carroll (Coventry, RI), Katie Paddock (Providence, RI), Kayla Matarese and Izzy MarcAurele (Cranston, RI) each added a hit apiece.
Head Coach Liz Afonso commented after the day’s three games: “Tough loss in the first one, we made too many mental errors and every time we did Orange made us pay.  Orange played a great game and made some excellent defensive plays that stopped rallies. We will learn from this game and be better prepared for the next time we play them in the post season.  I was happy we were able to rebound in the second game versus Southern Maine to finish the day on a high note.”
The Next games for the Lady Knights will be this Thursday the 5th when they host the Bulldogs of Bunker Hill Community College from Charlestown, MA at 3:30pm at Winslow Park in Apponaug.
