Rolland’s Hat Trick Leads Knights over Holyoke 3-1

Warwick, R.I. – September 30, 2009: The CCRI Knights men’s soccer team defeated Region XXI combatant Cougars of Holyoke Community College from Holyoke, MA 3-1. With the victory the Knights improve to 3-4 overall and a perfect 3-0 in Region XXI play. The Knights came out on fire as Pitter Rolland (Providence, RI) scored the first of his three goals in the first 27 seconds on a perfect feed from Co-Captain Elton Moreira (Pawtucket, RI). Crisp passing and high intensity made Rolland’s Hat trick possible as the Knights continue to improve as they gain more experience. The Knights’ next game will be this Thursday October 1st when they travel to play Region XXI foe Manchester Community College in Manchester, CT at 4:00pm.

No. 3 ranked Lady Knights Bury Bryant & Stratton 8-0!

Warwick, R.I. – September 28, 2009: The No. 3 ranked CCRI Lady Knights soccer team travelled to Syracuse, NY to play the Bobcats of Bryant & Stratton College. The Lady Knights cruised to an 8-0 victory. With the victory the Lady Knights improve to 8-1 on the season. The Lady Knights scored quickly and often led by their leading scorer Alexis Smith (Wakefield, RI) who scored first just two minutes into the game. Smith scored ten minutes later giving the Lady Knights a quick 2-0 lead and they never looked back. Smith led the way with her second hat trick (three goals) performance of the year while adding two assists followed by Ashley Choiniere (Hope, RI) who had two goals and an assist and Katy Mac Andrew added a goal and two assists. Melody Lawrence (Foster, RI) and the Lady Knights defense secured their eighth shutout of the year. The Lady Knights’ next game will be Wednesday the 30th when they host Region XXI foe Springfield Technical Community College at 4:00pm at the CCRI soccer complex in Lincoln, RI.

No. 3 Lady Knights suffer first loss to No. 1 Monroe CC 2-0

Warwick, R.I. – September 28, 2009: The No. 3 ranked (NJCAA Division I women’s soccer poll) CCRI Lady Knights soccer team lost their first game of the season to the No. 1 ranked (NJCAA DI poll) Lady Tribunes of Monroe Community College from Rochester, NY 2-0. With the loss the Lady Knights fall to 7-1 on the season. In a potential preview of the Northeast District Championship the No. 3 Lady Knights faced-off against No. 1 ranked Lady Tribunes in a very physical and hard fought contest. The Lady Tribunes’ Veronica Santiago scored just 15 minutes into the game giving them a 1-0 lead on a beautifully placed hard shot to the far corner of the goal past CCRI goalkeeper Melody Lawrence (Foster, RI) who dove to her right in a valiant effort but the shot was so well placed she couldn’t get to it. It was Lawrence’s first goal against all year. The Lady Tribunes were able to add an insurance goal by Ashley Wilson to take a 2-0 lead before the half ended. The Lady Knights played a much better second half creating multiple scoring opportunities but could not convert them. The Lady Knights will look forward to a re-match later in the season now that they know what to expect from the Lady Tribunes. The Lady Knights have no time to hang their heads as they will face a very tough Bryant & Stratton team on Sunday the 27th at noon.

Lady Knights have tough time at Genesee Tournament

Warwick, R.I. – September 28, 2009: The CCRI Lady Knights Volleyball team travelled to Batavia, NY to compete in the Genesee Community College Invitational this past weekend. The Lady Knights played some very strong competition and gained valuable experience but came out on the short end of their five matches. Losing to Columbus State Community College 16-25, 11-25, and 17-25, Mott Community College 17-25, 25-20, 18-25, and 21-25, and host school Genesee Community College 15-25, 18-25, 25-23, and 19-25. The Lady Knights then fell to St. Clair County Community College 21-25, 11-25 and 17-25 and Hagerstown Community College 11-25 and 15-25. With the losses the Lady Knights fall to 10-16 on the season. The Lady Knights did get some great individual performances from Renee Boudreaux (Cranston, RI) with 48 digs, Suzanne Laundry (Tiverton, RI) had 31 kills, Casey Doyle (Warwick, RI) had seven aces and Captain Cory Santos (Carlsbad, CA) added 74 assists. The Lady Knights next match will not be until Wednesday October 7th when they travel to play Region XXI foe Northern Essex Community College at 7:00pm.

Lady Knights’ runners place 20th at Cod Fish Bowl

Warwick, R.I. – September 28, 2009: The CCRI cross country runners travelled to Franklin Park in Boston, MA Saturday to compete in the Cod Fish Bowl 8k men’s and 5k women’s races. The Lady Knights ran their best times of the season over the challenging Franklin Park 5k course to finish 20th out of 23 teams with 548 points. Therese Kerin (East Greenwich, RI) led the way for the Lady Knights with a 68th place finish in her season’s best time of 20 minutes 53 seconds followed closely by Jaden Riendeau (East Providence, RI) who placed 83rd in her season’s best time of 21:16. Other Lady Knights finishers included Janelle Piche (Coventry, RI) 184th in a time of 25:01, Sarah Brodeur (Westerly, RI) 191st in a time of 26:06 and, Captain Kayleigh Smith (Cumberland, RI) 201st in 29:23 in her first race of the season. The Knights men ran as an incomplete team with two runners completing the 8k course. Brenden Dohoney (Warwick, RI) placed 148th in a time of 30:48 and Robert Brothers (Cranston, RI) placed 179th in a time of 33:13. CCRI will host the Tri-State Invitational this Saturday October 3rd at the CCRI Flanagan Campus in Lincoln Men’s race starts at 10:00am women’s race starts at 11:00am.

Warwick, R.I. – September 28, 2009: The CCRI Knights men’s soccer team travelled to Syracuse, NY to play the Bobcats of Bryant & Stratton. The Knights’ defense played a tremendous first half keeping the Bobcats off the scoreboard going into halftime 0-0. However, in the second half the Knights had a few injuries while already playing without one of their top scorers Prince Artey (Woonsocket, RI) due to a previous injury, giving the Bobcats scoring opportunities which they converted to win the contest 4-0. With the loss the Knights fall to 2-4 on the season. The Knights next game will be Tuesday the 29th when they host Region XXI foe Holyoke Community College at 4:00pm at the CCRI soccer complex in Lincoln, RI.

Knights beat Ben Franklin Institute 2-0!

Warwick, R.I. – September 23, 2009: The CCRI Knights men’s soccer team defeated the Shockers of Ben Franklin Institute from Boston, MA 2-0. With the victory the Knights improve their record to 2-3 on the season and a perfect 2-0 in Region XXI play. The Knights got on the scoreboard first when Co-Captain Elton Moreira (Pawtucket, RI) scored a goal assisted by Nick Medici (Cranston, RI) to give the Knights a 1-0 lead going into halftime. Moreira was able to net an insurance goal in the second half on a nice assist from Mario Andrade (Attleboro, MA) giving the Knights a 2-0 lead. That is all CCRI needed as the Knights defense anchored by goalkeeper Jason Oliveira (Cumberland, RI) recorded their first shutout of the season. The Knights’ next game will be this Saturday when they will travel to Syracuse, NY to play Bryant & Stratton at 1:00pm.

Smith’s Hat Trick leads No. 3 Lady Knights to 6-0 victory over Vikings!

Warwick, R.I. – September 22, 2009: The No. 3 ranked (NJCAA Division I women’s soccer poll 9/22/09) CCRI Lady hosted and defeated the Vikings of Mercer County Community College 6-0. With the victory the Lady Knights improve their record to 7-0 on the season. Mercer had recently lost 2-1 in the last two minutes of the game to No. 1 ranked Monroe Community College so the Lady Knights knew this would be their toughest contest to date. However, the Lady Knights got a spectacular effort from sophomore Alexis Smith (Wakefield, RI) who was the star of the day scoring a hat trick (three goals). Smith was helped by sophomore Ashley Choiniere (Hope, RI), Tri-Captain Alyssa Giudici (Cranston, RI), and freshman Jessica Mac Andrew (Coventry, RI) who each added a goal and an assist. In addition, the Lady Knights’ defense anchored by goalkeeper Melody Lawrence (Foster, RI) recorded their seventh consecutive shutout to begin the season. The Lady Knights’ next game will be this Saturday when they travel to Rochester, NY to play the No. 1 ranked Lady Tribunes of Monroe Community College at 12noon.

Lady Knights place Third at Prairie State Invitational! Santos earns All-tourney honors!

Warwick, R.I. – September 22, 2009: The CCRI Lady Knights volleyball team travelled to Chicago Heights, IL on Saturday to compete in the Prairie State Invitational. In pool play the Lady Knights lost their first match to South Suburban College 25-22, 19-25, and 12-15 but went on to defeat Morton College 25-17 and 25-23 and Triton College 25-11 and 25-15 before losing to Milwaukee Area Technical College 21-25 and 23-25. In the playoff game for third place the Lady Knights defeated South Suburban College in a thrilling match 25-23 and 26-24. Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Cory Santos (Carlsbad, CA) who earned All-tournament honors with 10 aces and an eye-popping 60 assists, also having a big tournament was Suzanne Landry (Tiverton, RI) with 32 kills and Alysa O’Neill (Johnston, RI) added eight blocks. The Lady Knights’ next matches will be this weekend when they travel to Batavia, NY to compete in the Genesee Community College Tournament.

Warwick, R.I. – September 22, 2009: The CCRI Lady Knights volleyball team travelled to Cicero, IL to play the Panthers of Morton College on Friday night. The Lady Knights defeated the Panthers in four games 25-19, 22-25, 25-15, and 25-12. With the victory the Lady Knights’ record improves to 7-9 on the season. Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Alysa O’Neil (Johnston, RI) who had seven blocks followed by Suzanne Landry (Tiverton, RI) with 16 kills. In addition, Captain Cory Santos (Carlsbad, CA) had 27 assists while Renee Boudreaux (Cranston, RI) added six aces. The Lady Knight’s next match will be Saturday when they compete in the Prairie State Invitational in Chicago Heights, IL.

Knights’ runners improve at UMass-Dartmouth Invitational!

Warwick, R.I. – September 22, 2009: The CCRI Cross Country runners travelled to Dartmouth, MA to compete in the Junior Varsity race at the UMass-Dartmouth Invitational. Despite running as incomplete teams all CCRI runners ran their best times of the season. The ladies were led by Therese Kerin (East Greenwich, RI) in a time of 21 minutes and 1 second for a fine 39th place finish followed by Jaden Riendeau (East Providence, RI) placed 65th in a time of 21:54. Also running well was Janelle Piche (Coventry, RI) took almost 2 minutes off last weeks’ time to finish 148th in 24:35 and Sarah Brodeur (Westerly, RI) placed 159th in a time of 25:01. Two men ran for the Knights Saturday in their first attempt running the college men’s distance of 8K and they both adjusted well. Brenden Dohoney (Warwick, RI) placed 126th in a time of 30:10 and Robert Brothers (Cranston, RI) placed 177th in a time of 32:15

CCRI Knights fall to top 20 Tribunes team 6-0

Warwick, R.I. – September 22, 2009: the CCRI Knights men’s soccer team traveled to Rochester, NY to play the Tribunes of Monroe Community College who is ranked among the top 20 teams in NJCAA Division I soccer. The Knights held the Tribunes scoreless through the first half. However, the Knights could not maintain the intensity of the Tribunes as they erupted for six unanswered goals in the second half to win by the final score of 6-0. With the loss the Knights’ record falls to 1-3 on the season. The Knights’ next game will be Tuesday the 22nd when the host the Shockers of Ben Franklin Institute from Cambridge, MA at 3:30pm at the CCRI soccer complex in Lincoln, RI.

Warwick, R.I. – September 18, 2009: The CCRI Lady Knights soccer team who is ranked No. 4 ranked National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll and No. 5 in the National Junior College Athletic Association Poll (NJCAA) defeated Region XXI rival Dean College 8-0. With the victory the Lady Knights improve their record to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in Region XXI play. Freshman Katy Mac Andrew (Coventry, RI) led the Lady Knights with two goals and two assists followed by Captain Alyssa Giudici (Cranston, RI) with a goal and an assist, and freshman Alyssa Petrucci (East Greenwich, RI) added two goals. Freshman goalkeeper Melody Lawrence (Foster, RI) remained perfect in net recording her sixth straight shutout. The Lady Knights’ next game will be this Saturday when they host the Vikings of Mercer County Community College from Trenton, NJ at 1:00pm.

Lady Knights level Lesley University in three sets!

Warwick, R.I. – September 18, 2009: the CCRI Lady Knights volleyball team hosted and defeated the Lynx of Lesley University from Cambridge, MA in three straight sets 25-20, 25-15, and 25-11. With the match victory the Lady Knights improve their record to 6-9 on the season. The Lady Knights were led by sophomore Casey Doyle (Warwick, RI) with a team-high seven aces and six blocks while Alysa O’Neill (Johnston, RI) added six blocks of her own. The Lady Knights travel to Illinois for the weekend to play in the Morton Invitational at Morton College in Cicero, IL on Friday the 18th and the Prairie State Tournament at Prairie State College in Chicago Heights, IL on Saturday the 19th.

CCRI Knights rally back to ward off Warriors 2-1!

Warwick, R.I. – September 17th, 2009: The CCRI Knights men’s soccer team defeated the Warriors of Massasoit Community College from Brockton, MA 2-1. With the victory the Knights improve their record to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in Region XXI play. After a slow start the Knights were down 1-0, but the Knights’ Javier Juarez (Cranston, RI) scored on a nice feed from Prince Artey (Woonsocket, RI) tying the score at 1-1. Alex Elmayan (Cranston, RI) was able to deliver the game-winner on a loose ball inside the Warriors’ box firing a shot passed Warriors’ goalkeeper Joe Pinto with just three minute left in the game. This was the first time since September of 2005 that the Knights were able to defeat the Warriors of Massasoit CC. The Knights travel to Rochester, NY to play the Tribunes of Monroe Community College who are ranked in the top 20 in the latest NJCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Poll (9/16/09).

CCRI grads to be inducted into New England Basketball Hall of Fame

Warwick, R.I. – Sept. 10, 2009: CCRI players, coaches and administrators are among 41 locals who will be inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame at a dinner and ceremony on Oct. 9 at Mohegan Sun. NAIA Men: Walt Edwards of Providence College, Husson; played basketball at CCRI in 1973 before transferring to PC and then Husson; best of the early big men at CCRI; Providence native

Junior College Men: Dobie Dennis, Bill Perry, Willie Washington, CCRI; these three teammates led the 1977 team (team is also being inducted) to a 26-0 regular season record and the national tournament; all Providence natives; Washington was Second Team All-American and scored more than 1,000 points

Three CCRI runners finish in top 50 at Roger Williams Invitational!

Warwick, R.I. – September 14, 2009: The CCRI Knights and Lady Knights cross country runners traveled to Colt State Park in Bristol, RI to compete in the Roger Williams University Invitational Meet on Saturday. They had three runners finish in the top 50. On the women’s side they were led by freshman Therese Kerin (East Greenwich, RI) who finished 22nd in a time of 22 minutes and 15.33 seconds followed by freshman Jaden Riendeau (East Providence, RI) who finished 24th in a time of 22:21.13. On the men’s side they were led by Brenden Dohoney (Warwick, RI) who finished 44th in a time of 18.50.10. Other CCRI finishers included on the women’s side: Sarah Brodeur (Westerly, RI) placed 73rd in a time of 26:00.57 and Janelle Piche (Coventry, RI) finished 78th in a time of 26:40.00. On the men’s side Robert Brothers placed 75th in a time of 21:56.00. The next meet will be Saturday the 19th when they travel to UMass-Dartmouth to run in the UMass-Dartmouth Invitational.

No. 5 ranked Lady Knights win fifth straight versus Illinois Central 5-0!

Warwick, R.I. – September 14, 2009: The no. 5 ranked (NJCAA Division I women’s soccer poll 9/9/09) CCRI Lady Knights soccer team hosted the Cougars of Illinois Central from East Peoria, IL Saturday. The Lady Knights remain undefeated as they defeated the Cougars 5-0. With the victory the Lady Knights improve to 5-0 on the season. Leading the way for the Lady Knights was freshman Katy Mac Andrew (Coventry, RI) who scored two goals giving her a team-leading eight goals on the season and sophomore Courtney Viera (Fall River, MA) added a goal and two assists. In addition, the Lady Knights defense anchored by defensive stopper Brittany Viera (Fall River, MA) and Goalkeeper Melody Lawrence (Foster, RI) recorded their fifth consecutive shutout. The Lady Knights’ next game will be Thursday the 17th when they host Region XXI foe Dean College at the CCRI soccer complex in Lincoln, RI at 4pm.

Knights fall 5-1 to Essex County College

Warwick, R.I. – September 14, 2009: The CCRI Knights men’s soccer team traveled to Newark, NJ to face the very tough and physical Essex County College Wolverines men’s soccer team. The Knights opened by scoring the first goal from freshman Josh Hulme (Cranston, RI) assisted by Alex Nahigian (Coventry, RI). The lead would not hold up as Essex was able to capitalize on the speed and quickness of the artificial turf and score five unanswered goals in the second half. With the loss the Knights fall to 0-2 on the season. The Knights’ next game will be Wednesday the 16th when they host Region XXI soccer rival Massasoit Community College at 4pm at the CCRI soccer complex in Lincoln, RI.

Lady Knights fall to Nassau and Monroe in Tri-match

Warwick, R.I. – September 14, 2009: The CCRI Lady Knights women's volleyball team hosted Nassau County College (Nassau CC) from Garden City, NY and Monroe College from New Rochelle, NY for a tri-match on Saturday. The Lady Knights lost to Nassau CC 23-25, 25-26, 25-23, 23-25, 7-15. This was a very close match with the Lady Knights led by Suzanne Landry (Tiverton, RI) with 13 kills, Captain Cory Santos (Carlsbad, CA) had six kills with 16 assists and Renee Boudreaux (Cranston, RI) added eight digs. They later lost to Monroe 15-25, 18-25, 17-25. With the two losses the Lady Knights’ record is 5-9 on the season.

With the victory the Lady Knights win their fourth straight and begin the season 4-0 overall and 2-0 in Region XXI play. Leading the way for the Lady Knights offensively was sophomore Alexis Smith (Wakefield, RI) and freshman Katy Mac Andrew (Coventry, RI) who each scored two goals and one assist. Defensively, the Lady Knights defenders anchored by Goalkeeper Melody Lawrence (Foster, RI) recorded their fourth shutout in four games. The Lady Knights next game will be this Saturday September 12th when they will host Illinois Central College at 1:00PM.

However, the Lady Knights lost momentum, energy and execution and lost the last three games 7-25, 11-25 and 11-15. With the loss the Lady Knights are now 5-7 on the season. Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Renee Boudreaux (Cranston, RI) with 11 aces and seven digs and Captain Cory Santos (Carlsbad, CA) added 12 assists. The Lady Knights next matches will be this Saturday September 12th when they host Nassau County College and Monroe Community College matches start at 11:00AM.

Warwick, R.I. – September 10, 2009: the CCRI Knights men’s soccer team lost in their first game of the season to the Avengers of ASA from Brooklyn, NY 2-1. With the loss the Knights begin the season 0-1. CCRI’s Prince Artey (Woonsocket, RI) scored the Knights’ only goal in the first half giving them a 1-0 lead going into halftime. However, the Avengers scored just seventeen seconds into the second half and later pushed across the deciding goal to win by the final score of 2-1. The Knights’ next game will be Sunday September 13th when they travel to play the Wolverines of Essex County College in Newark, NJ at 1:00 pm.

No. 20 ranked Lady Knights take second place at Dragon Invitational! Santos and O’Neill earn All-Tourney honors!

Warwick, R.I. – September 8, 2009: In day two of the Dragon Invitational hosted by the Dragons of Howard Community College in Columbia, MD the Lady Knights would defeat the Howard Dragons in the Semi-final game of their tournament 25-19 and 25-21 to improve their record to 5-5 on the season. Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Suzanne Landry (Tiverton, RI) with nine kills, and three aces and Captain Cory Santos (Carlsbad, CA) added 16 assists. In the Dragon Invitational Championship the Lady Knights lost to the College of Southern Maryland from La Plata, MD 22-25 and 21-25. With the loss the Lady Knights’ record falls to 5-6 on the season. In the Championship game The Lady Knights received great performances from Suzanne Landry with five kills, Jessica Putrino (Exeter, RI) with three kills and Alysa O’Neill (Johnston, RI) added three blocks.

Overall, this was an excellent weekend for the Lady Knights who went 5-1 and finished second at the Dragon Invitational. Earning All-Tournament honors from the Lady Knights was Captain Cory Santos (Carlsbad, CA) and Alysa O’Neill (Johnston, RI).

No. 20 ranked Lady Knights go 4-0 in first day of Dragon Invitational!

Warwick, R.I. – September 8, 2009: The No. 20 ranked (National Junior College Athletic Association) CCRI Lady Knights volleyball team travelled to Columbia, MD to take part in the “Dragon Invitational” at Howard Community College this past Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday the Lady Knights defeated Harford Community College from Bel Air, MD 25-17 and 25-19 for their first match victory of 2009 making the 1-5! The Lady Knights kept their momentum going by defeating Frederick Community College from Frederick, MD 23-25, 25-23 and 15-13 to improve to 2-5 on the year. In their third match of the day CCRI defeated The Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC)-Essex from Baltimore, MD 25-15 and 25-22 to improve to 3-5 on the season. In their last match on Saturday the Lady Knights defeated Cecil Community College from North East, MD 25-13 and 25-19 for a perfect 4-0 mark in Saturday action and improving their overall record to 4-5 on the season. The No. 20 ranked Lady Knights will look to keep their four-game winning streak going when play resumes on Sunday morning.

Morse and Gentile lead Lady Knights past Manchester 7-0!

Warwick, R.I. – September 8, 2009: The No. 11th ranked (National Junior College Athletic Association/National Soccer Coaches Association of America) CCRI Lady Knights soccer team travelled to Manchester, CT and defeated the Region XXI Cougars of Manchester Community College 7-0. With the victory the Lady Knights improve to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in Region XXI play. Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Tri-Captain Stephanie Morse (Warwick, RI) with two goals and one assist and Tri-Captain Kaela-Rose Gentile (Glocester, RI) with one goal and two assist In addition, Courtney Viera (Fall River, MA) added a goal and an assist while Goalkeeper Melody Lawrence (Foster, RI) recorded her third shutout in three games.
