Gentile’s goal lifts No. 4 ranked Lady Knights over No. 11 ranked Ocelots 1-0!

Warwick, R.I. – Oct. 5, 2009: The Community College of Rhode Island women’s soccer team traveled to Michigan where they defeated the Ocelots of Schoolcraft College 1-0 on Saturday, Oct. 3. The CCRI Lady Knights are ranked No. 4 in the country and the Ocelots are ranked No. 11 according to the NJCAA Division I women’s soccer poll. With the victory, the Lady Knights improve to an overall 10-1 record so far this season.

The Lady Knights were playing their second nationally ranked team in eight days and were forced to adjust to the home team’s field conditions. The Schoolcraft soccer field was smaller than the regulation pitch that CCRI is used to and mud puddles slowed down the team’s speed which did not allow for many scoring opportunities.

The first half of the game provided some great back and forth action between the two teams, each marking the other’s top scorers. At halftime, they were tied 0-0. As the second half began, Schoolcraft attempted to capitalize on their home field advantage. The Ocelots dominated the first five minutes of the half in their offensive end. On a free kick just outside the 18-yard box, the ball deflected off of multiple players in the penalty area. As it traveled within inches of the goal crease, CCRI tri-captain and midfielder Kaela-Rose Gentile (Glocester, R.I.) cleared the ball away from the goal. CCRI Head Coach Dennis Grassini referred to the save as the “Play of the game. Kaela has improved so much this year. She came to CCRI a good player, and now she has made herself into a great player by always hustling. Her skill set is catching up to her intensity.”

The Ocelots again gained momentum but missed on another shot on goal that ricocheted off the crossbar. Then the Lady Knights went on the offensive. Katy MacAndrew (Coventry, R.I.) dribbled around three Ocelot defenders and delivered a shot that missed the goal by inches. Tri-captain Stephanie Morse (Warwick, R.I.) sent a pass in front of the goal that just missed the out-stretched foot of a sliding Gentile. The Lady Knights connected on their next attempt when tri-captain Alyssa Giudici (Cranston, R.I.) crossed the ball to Gentile who scored with just 28 minutes left in the game.

The Lady Knights kept the pressure on as MacAndrew made another spectacular run towards the net faking out defenders before firing a 20-footer that hit the cross bar and just missed Giudici’s foot for an insurance goal.

Lady Knights’ sophomore defenders Carla Cano (Pawtucket, R.I.), Courtney Shea (North Smithfield, R.I.), freshman sweeper Stephanie Estacio (Cranston, R.I.) and goalkeeper Melody Lawrence (Foster, R.I.) neutralized the Ocelots’ offense down the stretch, and charted their 10th shutout of the season.
