Knights overcome Orange County CC 69-58!

Warwick, R.I. – November 30, 2009: the CCRI Knights men’s basketball team hosted the Colts of Orange County Community College from Middletown, NY on Saturday at the Vincent A. Cullen Fieldhouse. The Knights overcame a very tough Orange County CC team 69-58. With the victory the Knights improve to 6-2 on the season. The Knights led by just five points at halftime with a slim 32-27 lead. In addition, the Knights got big stops from another key reserve Jason Collier (Killingly, CT) who tamed a hot-shooting Jelani Ochoa who spurred a Colts rally late in the second half with eight straight points until Collier slowed him down. Colin Burns (Chepachet, RI) led the Knights with 15 points and four rebounds and Doran Mitchell (New Britain, CT) added 12 points to the Knights’ victory. Head Coach Rick Harris commented “We need to emphasize defense and the kids were truly focused on that. Seven Lady Knights elected First Team All-Region XXI!

Warwick, R.I. – November 24, 2009: The CCRI Lady Knights soccer team finished their season at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament at Tyler Junior College in Tyler, TX. Thought he season did not end as they wanted with a national championship, they did recently receive some good news. The All-Region XXI First Team was announced and featured seven Lady Knights!

The Lady Knights were led by sophomore Co-Captain Stephanie Morse (Warwick, RI) earning First Team honors for the straight second year. She was undoubtedly the team leader orchestrating the offense and defense from her midfield position. Morse finished the year with five goals and 15 assists for 25 total points. Another key sophomore was Alexis Smith (Wakefield, RI) also earning her second First Team All-Region XXI honor during her two years at CCRI, “Smitty” led the Lady Knights in scoring with a team-high 20 goals with 11 assists for 51 total points which ranked her No. 30 in the NJCAA. Their sophomore leadership did not end there as Ashley Choiniere (Hope, RI) earned her first All-Region XXI selection. Choiniere aided the Lady Knights with 15 goals and 10 assists for 40 total points ranking her No. 40 by the NJCAA, she also wowed the crowds with her dazzling flip throw in that set up many Lady Knights scoring opportunities. The final sophomore was defender Carla Cano (Pawtucket, RI) she was the veteran leader and stopper on the Lady Knights’ defense helping limit opponents to just eight goals all year, her job was simple according to Head Coach Dennis Grassini “find the leading scorer on the other team and shut them down.”

The Lady Knights also had three freshmen earn All-Region XXI honors led by Goalkeeper Melody Lawrence (Foster, RI) who ranked No.2 in the NJCAA with a .22 goals against average allowing just four goals in regular season 18 games, making 74 saves in 1,620 minutes in net a tremendous feat for a freshman. In addition, Lawrence re-wrote the CCRI Goalkeeping record book with two new marks including eight consecutive shutouts and 16 shutouts on the season. Lawrence was helped by freshman sweeper Stephanie Estacio (Cranston, RI), who was the last line of defense before Lawrence while also using her strong kicking leg to deliver goal kicks to the opposing team’s end of the field. The final Lady Knight to earn All-Region honors was freshman Katy MacAndrew (Coventry, RI), who was second on the Lady Knights in scoring with 19 goals and 11 assists for 49 total points ranking her No. 35 by the NJCAA. This talented group of freshmen will look to carry on the Lady Knights success into the 2010 season.

No. 3 ranked Lady Knights push Polk State College to the limit but lose 3-2 in double overtime

Tyler, TX – November 20, 2009: The No. 3 ranked (NJCAA Division I poll) CCRI Lady Knights soccer team (17-2) playing in the consolation round of the NJCAA Division I National Championship at Tyler Junior College in Tyler, TX. The Lady Knight faced-off against the No. 1 ranked (NJCAA DI poll) Vikings of Polk State College (12-1-1) from Winter Haven, FL. The Lady Knights lost 3-2 in a double-overtime heart-breaker. With the loss the Lady Knights end their season with a 17-3 record while Polk State College (13-1-1) advances to play in the 5th/6th place game Sunday at 9:00am versus the winner of the Schoolcraft College versus Harford CC game.

The Lady Knights came out of the game playing much better than they did on Thursday versus Paradise Valley CC. They seemed to be a little more relaxed yet playing with tremendous intensity. Unfortunately for them, the first big break went the Vikings way. After a questionable call in the penalty area at the 7:18 mark of the first half Polk State College (PSC) scored on penalty kick from Raquel Godinho to make the score 1-0 PSC. However, the Lady Knights were dominating most of the play keeping the ball in the PSC end for most of the half. Their pressure paid off as Alexis Smith (Wakefield, RI) tallied an unassisted goal at the 43:21 mark to tie the game at 1-1. Just a moment later Tri-Captain Stephanie Morse (Warwick, RI) scored another goal for the Lady Knights assisted by Kelsey Pomerleau (Brockton, MA) at the 44:55 mark giving the Lady Knights a 2-1 lead going into halftime.

In the second half the Lady Knights continued to control most of the tempo and got most of the 50/50 balls that came their way however, they could not push across an insurance goal. At the 72:49 mark PSC scored another goal by Lara Theodore ti tie the game at 2-2 with a little over 17 minutes remaining in regulation. The two teams battled up and down the field over the last few minutes trying to get the game-winner to no avail as the game went into overtime tied at 2-2.

The first 10 minute overtime period saw a great deal of action with multiple scoring opportunities for both sides but nobody scored.

In the second overtime the Lady Knights were still keeping the ball on the PSC side of the field for most of the period. With just two minutes left the Vikings got the first corner kick of the game. The Vikings played the ball in to the crease deflecting off an outstretched Melody Lawrence (Foster, RI) allowing PSC's Raquel Godinho fire a shot that ricocheted off the cross bar and back into a cluster of players for both teams eventually finding the foot of Viking striker Ashley Palmer who kicked it into the back of the net to give Polk State College a 3-2 victory with just 1:55 remaining in the second overtime.

The loss marks the end of a remarkable season for the Lady Knights who returned to the Division I Women's National Championship Tournament for the first time since 2003 which was their goal from the beginning of the season. After the game Head Coach Dennis Grassini commented “Our young ladies played much better today. They beat Polk to almost every 50/50 ball and played with tremendous intensity for the entire 100+ minutes of the game, and never gave up versus the team that was ranked No. 1 in the last regular season NJCAA poll. It was a great game unfortunately we did not come out on top. Associate Head Coach Kathy Bannan and I are very proud of the effort they put forth today and for the entire season, this was a special group of young ladies who should be very proud if their great season.”

CCRI held Dean without a field goal until 8:30 left in the second half. Head Coach Kevin Monagle commented “The lesson here tonight is that our defense can never take a night off. There are nights when we will score, and nights when we won’t, but we always need to defend.” The Lady Knights travel to Maine this weekend to face Central Maine CC Saturday at 5:00pm and Southern Maine CC Sunday at 12:00pm.

Knights fall to Dean 99-97 in Overtime

Warwick, R.I. – November 20, 2009: The CCRI Knights men’s basketball team hosted rival Bulldogs of Dean College on Thursday night at the Vincent A. Cullen Fieldhouse. The Bulldogs defeated the Knights 99-97 in overtime giving CCRI its first Region XXI loss (2-1) and a 3-2 record overall. Led by Pat Sturdahl’s (Exeter, RI) 19 points, five Knights scored in double figures yet Dean’s second half efforts proved to be too much for the CCRI to overcome. An eight foot baseline floater by Sturdahl sent the game into overtime where the Knights took a 95-91 lead but could not put the Bulldogs away. Head coach Rick Harris commented “This loss will force us to bear down as a team and work even harder to get where we want to be.” The Knights travel to Maine this weekend to face Central Maine CC Saturday at 7:00pm and Southern Maine Sunday at 2:00pm.

Lady Knights fall to Paradise Valley CC 1-0; will play Polk State College in consolation round Friday at noon!

Tyler, TX – November 19, 2009: The CCRI Lady Knights soccer team traveled to Tyler Junior College in Tyler, TX to take part in the NJCAA Division I Women's Soccer National Championship. The Lady Knights were (17-1) the No 3 seed and faced the No. 6 seed Pumas of Paradise Valley Community College (17-3) from Phoenix, AZ. The Lady Knights lost a very hard fought battle with the Pumas 1-0. With the loss the Lady Knight's record falls to 17-2 on the season and they will now face No. 2 seed Polk State College in the consolation round tomorrow at 12noon CST (1:00pm EST). Polk lost to No. 7 seed Johnson County Community College in the first game of the tournament 2-1.

The Lady Knights were trying to find their rhythm in the first half as were the Pumas. The Pumas kept the ball on the Lady Knight half of the field for much of the first half. The Lady Knights only had a couple potential scoring opportunities coming via the patented flip throw-in of Ashley Choiniere (Hope RI) however they could not convert them into goals.

The second half saw both teams finding their strides while battling back and forth exchanging attacks at the other's net with a few close calls on both sides, which included a goal saving clear from the Lady Knights' goal mouth in the 39th minute of the second half by defender Carla Cano (Pawtucket, RI). Cano tracked down a deflected shot off the hands of Melody Lawrence (Foster, RI). As the ball trickled inside the penalty area, right in front of the goal mouth Cano cleared it away at the last possible moment to prevent the goal. That great play was followed by another Lady Knight's scoring opportunity from an Ashley Choiniere throw-in that almost found the head of a high-flying Katy Mac Andrew (Coventry, RI) until Puma goalkeeper Naomi Salazar snatched it out of the air. The Pumas kept the pressure on CCRI and their pressure led to some corner kick opportunities but Lady Knights' goalkeeper Melody Lawrence was up to the task making save after save. With about 25 minutes remaining in the game the Pumas were awarded an free kick from just outside the top right of the 18 yard box. Puma midfielder Holly Benson played the ball into the penalty area into a mass of white and blue shirts eventually deflecting off the shin of Amy Eyden and finding its way to the back corner of the goal. That gave the Pumas a 1-0 lead. The Lady Knights kept battling back to score a tying goal but the Pumas were able to fend them off earning them the hard fought 1-0 victory.

After the game Head Coach Dennis Grassini commented “I am very proud of our young ladies, they played very hard. Sometimes you need a little luck and today we did not get any. But we have to tip our hats to Paradise Valley they played better today, kind of like how we played versus Monroe Community College to get here. Our young ladies have nothing to hang their heads about, they played their hearts out, that is all the Kathy and I ask. I know they really wanted to win but every year at this tournament seven teams go home unhappy. Now we have to focus our attention on very good Polk State College team that was ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA poll at the end of the regular season”

CCRI women’s soccer defeats rival Monroe CC 2-0 to advance to National Championship

Warwick, R.I. – Nov. 9, 2009: The No. 4 ranked (NJCAA Division I poll) Community College of Rhode Island women’s soccer team beat its Northeast rival Monroe Community College of Rochester, N.Y. on Nov. 8 by a score of 2-0 for the District G championship. With the win, the Lady Knights improve their record to 17-1 and advance to the National Championship for the first time since 2003 when they were national runners-up. The NJCAA Division I Women’s Soccer National Championship will be held from Nov. 19 to 22 at Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas.

CCRI’s only loss this season came against Monroe early in the season on Sept. 26. The Lady Knights came out strong and dominated the rematch from start to finish. Early in the first half, Monroe’s star forward Veronica Santiago was granted a penalty kick and an opportunity to take a 1-0 lead in the match. CCRI freshman goalkeeper Melody Lawrence (Foster, R.I.) smothered the shot for a save. Head Coach Dennis Grassini said after the game that Lawrence’s save was the “turning point of the match.” Associate Head Coach Kathy Bannan, who trains Lawrence, said “Melody has really come along this season and she is peaking at the right time. She has worked very hard all season long and it showed on that penalty kick.” Lawrence has broken into the Lady Knights record books by recording 16 shutouts on the season. She also holds the record for consecutive shutout victories with eight.

CCRI got on the board in the 26th minute of the first half with a goal by Ashley Choiniere (Hope, R.I.). With 10 minutes remaining in the half, the Lady Knights scored again when tri-captain Kaela-Rose Gentile (Glocester, R.I.) headed the ball into the net during a goal-mouth scramble. Tri-captain Stephanie Morse (Warwick, R.I.) assisted on both goals.

From the start of the second half, the Lady Knights had to withstand a lot of pressure from Monroe. “I told the players at the halftime break, there are two halves to the game and it is not even close to being over,” Grassini said. “They are going to come out hard and strong for at least the first 10 minutes and we must prepare for that mentally and physically.” Monroe did come out strong, but CCRI stopped their shots on goal.

Forwards Alexis Smith (Wakefield, R.I.) and Katy MacAndrew (Coventry, R.I.) kept the offensive pressure on Monroe. With 17 minutes remaining in the match, the Lady Knights scored another goal that was called back by the officials due to goalkeeper interference.

CCRI’s defense stopped Monroe’s star forward Veronica Santiago. Grassini credited Stephanie Morse for “an unbelievable job in the midfield shutting down Monroe’s midfielder Anne Beinetti throughout the entire match” and for “setting up goals, blocking shots and beating everyone to the ball.”

Head Coach Dennis Grassini said, “Mercer came out strong from the start of the game and they really set us back on our heels. The long layoff between matches really hurt us. I’m very proud of our team as they didn’t get rattled and kept their composure throughout the match. They fought and clawed their way back into the game. Once they took the lead, there was no looking back. I told them that good teams always find a way to win and that they are a very good team.”

With the victory, their 16th of the season, the Lady Knights advance to play longtime rival Monroe Community College on Sunday, Nov. 8 at noon to decide the District G championship. The winner advances to the national tournament at Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas on Nov. 19.
