Knights navigate past Navy Prep 91-79!

Warwick, RI – January 28, 2010: The CCRI Knights men’s basketball team hosted the Rams of the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) from Newport, RI on Wednesday night. The Knights defeated the Rams 91-79. With the victory the Knights improve to 11-10 on the season. Five Knights scored in double figures as they overcame NAPS’s Dan Cozad who scored a game-high 42 points which included seven 3-pointers. The Knights and Rams were tied 48-48 at the half thanks to 30 points by Cozad but a defensive switch to box and one on Cozad proved to be deciding factor holding him to just 12 points and one 3-pointer in the second half. The Knights were led by Mike Juarez (Cranston, RI) who scored 21 points with seven rebounds, and two steals followed by Co-Captain Colin Burns (Chepachet, RI) scoring 16 points with seven rebounds and four assists. Also playing well for the Knights were Co-Captain Pat Sturdahl (Exeter, RI) scoring 12 points with five assists, five steals and five rebounds, Tyler Patch (Seekonk, MA) added 12 points and five rebounds, Mike Rivera (Boston, MA) scored 11 points with four assists and Apollos Wade (Taunton, MA) added four points, five rebounds and a game-high 10 assists. Head Coach Rick Harris commented after the game “Always pleased to get a win over NAPS. Mike Juarez along with our other freshman are progressing beautifully and the entire team continues to gel. Our goal is to be playing our best ball of the season as we head into late February and early March.” The Knights next games are this weekend as they travel to New York to play Nassau Community College on Saturday at 3:00pm and Sunday when they play Suffolk County Community College at 2:00pm.

Lady Knights overcome 15 point second half deficit to beat Orange County CC 62-58!

Warwick, RI – January 25, 2010: The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team hosted the Colts of Orange County Community College from Middletown, NY on Sunday. The Lady Knights were down 31-26 at halftime and trailed by 15 points late in the second half but dug deep to defeat the Colts 62-58 with a tremendous comeback victory. The Lady Knights tied the game for the first time at 55-55 with just 2:29 left in the game after two free throws by Kaitlyn Rachiele (Scituate, RI), the colts answered with a free throw from Colleen Decker making the score 56-55 with 2:19 left. They took their first lead on a steal and fast break lay-up making the score 57-56 with two minutes left. Kayla Cabacungan sank two free throws for the Colts to give them the lead back 58-57 with 1:40 left. Teighlor Clare-Kearney (Manchester, CT) stole the ball and cruised up the floor quickly finding an open Rajvi Jarvis (Stratford, CT) under the basket to give the Lady Knights the 59-58 lead. Alexis Smith (Wakefield, RI) sank one of two free throws to extend the lead to 60-58 and Rachiele, who got her first start, sealed the comeback victory with two free throws with just 18.6 left to give the Lady Knights the 62-58 win. Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Teighlor Clare-Kearney (Manchester, CT) scoring 20 points with six rebounds, four steals and three assists and Kaitlyn Rachiele (Scituate, RI) scored eight points, with seven rebounds, three steals and two assists. Also helping the Lady Knights to victory were Rajvi Jarvis (Stratford, CT) scoring 10 points with six rebounds and a blocked shot and Lori Bergeron (Jaffrey, NH) added 12 points, seven rebounds and a steal. Head Coach Kevin Monagle commented after the big victory. “This was a great team win. It was definitely a challenge from the start. I am proud of how we were resilient and determined to get back in the game (down 15 in second half) and we were able to turn it into a victory. I cannot say enough about the game Lori Bergeron and Kate Rachiele played. Now we hopefully build and keep striving to get better every day.” The Lady Knights next game will be this Wednesday when they host the Rams of Navy Prep at 5:00pm.

Lady Knights rocked by No. 9 ranked Roxbury Community College 80-55

Warwick, RI – January 25, 2010: The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team hosted the No. 9 ranked (NJCAA Division III poll) Tigers of Roxbury Community College from Roxbury, MA on Saturday. The Lady Knights lost 80-55. With the loss the Lady Knights fall to 8-12 on the season and 3-3 in Region XXI play while the Tigers improve to 19-3 on the season. Roxbury led 43-27 at the half and kept rolling in the second half not allowing the Lady Knights a chance to get into the game with intense full-court pressure. Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Teighlor Clare-Kearney (Manchester, CT) scoring a team-high 16 points and Cassie Novicky scored nine points, six rebounds and two blocks. Also playing well for the Lady Knights was Noel Bullock (Greenbelt, MD) with 10 points and three assists while Rajvi Jarvis (Stratford, CT) added 10 points and four rebounds. Head Coach Kevin Monagle commented after the game “Another tough match up against a good team. RCC played great defense and made things difficult for us. We need to stay together and stay focused on improving and fight another day. We have a big match up with Orange County tomorrow.” The Lady Knights host the Colts of Orange County CC on Sunday at noon.

Rivera and Burns lead Knights over No. 5 ranked Roxbury CC 92-91!

Warwick, RI – January 25, 2010: The CCRI Knights men’s basketball team hosted the No. 5 ranked (NJCAA Division III poll) Tigers of Roxbury Community College from Roxbury, MA who came into the game with an impeccable 15-1 record. The Knights defeated the Tigers 92-91 in a tremendous back and forth Region XXI showdown. With the victory the Knights improve to 10-10 on the season and 4-3 in Region XXI play. The Knights led the Tigers 43-37 at the half but the Tigers came out shooting the lights out in the second half led by the game’s high scorer Jeffrey Cannon who scored 31 points. The Knights were able to counter Cannon with Mike Rivera (Boston, MA) and Colin Burns (Chepachet, RI) who answered the call for the 92-91 victory. Leading the way for the Knights were Mike Rivera who was playing against many hometown fans and former teammates scoring a career-high 27 points including five of six shooting from 3-point land with four assists followed by Co-Captain Colin Burns who poured-in 26 points with six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Also having a big game for the Knights was Mike Juarez (Cranston, RI) scoring 11 points, seven rebounds and two assists while the backcourt duo of Apollos Wade (Taunton, MA) and Pat Sturdahl (Exeter, RI) combined for 20 assists and nine steals and Esaie Touze (Providence, RI) had a career-high five blocked shots. Head Coach Rick Harris commented after the exciting victory “Our tough schedule really paid off in this game. We were not going to be denied tonight. We played intense team basketball with 31 assists and only 11 turnovers. Our guys have bought into the team play philosophy we preach all week long and we believe the best is yet to come.” The Knights next game will be this Wednesday when they will host the Rams of Navy Prep at 7:00pm at the Vincent A. Cullen Field house in Warwick.

Noons and Norris lead CCRI at Wesleyan Meet!

Warwick, RI – January 25, 2010: The CCRI men’s and women’s indoor track teams traveled to Middletown, CT to compete in the Wesleyan Invitational. Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Ashley Noons (North Dighton, MA) who won the shot put with a throw of 37 feet 9.5 inches. Noons also placed 17th in the weight throw with a 35’2.” effort. Blest Norris (Pawtucket, RI) placed 2nd in the 55m dash in a time of 6.52 seconds. Norris also placed 15th in the 200m with a time of 23.77 seconds. Also placing in the top half of their respective events were Scott Capista (Narragansett, RI) placing 13th in the 55m hurdles with a time of 8.61 seconds and James Reyes (Providence, RI) placed 27th in both the 55m dash and 200m dash with times of 7.09 seconds and 24.59 seconds. One other noteworthy performance by the Lady Knights was Chelsey Sarachick (Warwick, RI) placing 18th in the long jump with a leap of 12’9.5”.

Knights fall to Genesee CC 80-71 on consolation game of CCRI Invitational

Warwick, RI – January 18, 2010: The CCRI Knights men’s basketball team hosted the Cougars of Genesee Community College from Batavia, NY in the consolation game of the 2010 CCRI Basketball Invitational Tournament. The Knights lost to the Cougars 80-71. With the loss the Knights fall to 9-10 on the season. The Knights and Cougars were tied 34-34 at the half. The game remained tight with the score tied at 65-65 with just 5:25 left but the cougars would outscore the Knights 15-6 down the stretch to win 80-71. Leading the way for the Knights was Captain Colin Burns (Chepachet, RI) scoring a game-high 27 points with eight rebounds and two blocked shots followed by Mike Juarez (Cranston, RI) who scored a career-high 18 points with four rebounds and two steals. The Knights backcourt also played well with Pat Sturdahl (Exeter, RI) scoring eight points with four steals and Apollos Wade (Taunton, MA) added seven assists and five rebounds and two points. No.2 ranked (NJCAA Division II poll) Monroe Community College defeated Division I power Technical Career Institute 92-80 in the championship game of the 2010 CCRI Invitational Tournament. Head Coach Rick Harris commented after their game “Please with our team’s continued improvement, both individually and as a group. We continue to be battle tested and I am confident we will see some exciting things happen by this team as we get into our Region XXI play.” The Knights next game will be this Saturday the 23rd when they will host Region XXI foe Roxbury Community College at 3:00pm.

Lady Knights muffled by No. 15 ranked Monroe College 65-47

Warwick, RI – January 18, 2010: The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team hosted the No. 15 ranked (NJCAA Division II poll) Lady Mustangs of Monroe College from New Rochelle, NY on Sunday as part of the 2010 CCRI Basketball Invitational. The Lady Knights lost 65-47. With the loss the Lady Knights drop to 8-11 on the season. The Lady Knights trailed Monroe 34-15 yet played better in the second half but the depth and athleticism of Monroe proved to be too much as the Lady Mustangs would prevail 65-47. Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Captain Erica Pisaturo (Smithfield, RI) scoring 13 points with five rebounds and Cassie Novicky (New Milford, CT) scoring 12 points with seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Monroe’s April Williams led all scorers with a game-high 18 points including four 3-pointers. Head Coach Kevin Monagle commented after the game “Tough game this afternoon against a great team from Monroe College; a team we will face in a couple of weeks and hopefully in the post-season. Hopefully we learned some things about them and about ourselves this weekend.” The Lady Knights’ next game will be Saturday the 23rd at 1:00pm when they will host Region XXI foe Roxbury Community College at the Vincent A. Cullen Fieldhouse located on the CCRI Knight Campus in Warwick.

Knights fall to No 2 ranked Monroe Community College 79-71

Warwick, RI – January 17, 2010: The CCRI Knights men’s basketball team hosted No. 2 ranked (NJCAA DII Poll) Tribunes of Monroe Community College from Rochester, NY in their first game of the 2010 CCRI Invitational Tournament. The Knights lost to the Tribunes 79-71. With the loss the Knights fall to 9-9 on the season. The Knights and Tribunes were tied at 35-35 as Tri-Captain Apollos Wade (Taunton, MA) sank a 3-pointer as the halftime buzzer sounded. In the second half Tribunes guard Bobby Bell sank four 3-pointers each one deeper than the other which gave Monroe a 10 point cushion. The Knights battled valiantly throughout the second half cutting the lead to as little as two points but could not pull-off the upset as Monroe kept the Knights at bay with the 79-71 victory. Leading the way for the Knights was Tri-Captain Colin Burns (Chepachet, RI) scoring 17 points with five rebounds and three steals followed by TJ McKiver (New Haven, CT) who charted a double-double scoring 10 points with 11 rebounds while adding two steals, two assists and two charges taken. Also having a big game for the Knights were Pat Sturdahl (Exeter, RI) with 11 points five assist and five rebounds and Esaie Touze (Providence, RI) added eight points and 10 rebounds. Head Coach Rick Harris commented after the game “I was pleased with our young men’s effort and how they performed. They continue to get better and that is our daily goal.” The Knights will face Genesee Community College in the consolation game of the 2010 Invitational Sunday at 2:00pm while Monroe Community College will play Technical Career Institute in the championship game at 6:00pm at the Vincent A. Cullen Field House located on the CCRI Knight Campus in Warwick.

Lady Knights usurp Union County College 66-63!

Warwick, RI – January 17, 2010: The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team hosted the Lady Owls of Union County College on Saturday night in the 2010 CCRI Invitational Tournament at the Vincent A. Cullen Field house on the CCRI Knight Campus in Warwick. The Lady Knights defeated the Lady Owls 66-63. With the victory the Lady Knights improve to 8-10 on the season while union falls to 7-6. The Lady Knights were trailing 38-31 at halftime but were kept in the game with 20 first half point from Captain Erica Pisaturo (Smithfield, RI). In the second half the Lady Knights cranked-up the defensive intensity and got offensive support from Teighlor Clare-Kearney (Manchester, CT) who had 12 second half points and Cassie Novicky (New Milford, CT) who scored nine in the second half to lead the Lady Knights to the narrow 66-63 victory. Leading the way for the Lady Knights were Captain Erica Pisaturo with a team-high 22 points and five rebounds, Teighlor Clare-Kearney scored 19 points with four assists and two steals and Rajvi Jarvis (Stratford, CT) added four points and ripped down a game-high 16 rebounds. After the game Head Coach Kevin Monagle commented on the win “Great team victory, our first win in a while and a true grind it out win. It was definitely something to build on”. The Lady Knights have no time to rest as they will face No. 15 ranked (NJCAA Division II poll) Monroe College who defeated Genesee Community College in game one of the 2010 CCRI Invitational 94-79. Tip-off for the Lady Knights versus Monroe College is set for 4:00pm Sunday.

Lady Knights upended by UConn-Avery Point 82-63

Warwick, RI – January 14, 2010: The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team traveled to Groton, CT to play the top 20 ranked (NJCAA Division III) Region XXI foe Pointers of UConn-Avery Point. The Lady Knights lost to the Pointers 82-63. With the loss the Lady Knights fall to 7-10 on the season and 3-2 in Region XXI play. The Lady Knights and Pointers were tied 37-37 at the half but the sophomore-laden Pointers showed their experience outscoring the Lady Knights 45-26 in the second half as they got easy baskets off CCRI missed shots. The Lady Knights were led by Cassie Novicky (New Milford, CT) who scored a team-high 24 points with six rebounds, five steals and four blocked shots followed by Captain Erica Pisaturo (Smithfield, RI) who scored 13 points with seven rebounds and five assists. The Lady Knights’ next game will be this Saturday at 5:00pm when they will host the Owls of Union County College as part of the 2010 CCRI Invitational.

Lady Knights mauled by Mercer CC 70-42

Warwick, RI – January 11, 2010: The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team hosted the Vikings of Mercer County Community College from Trenton, NJ on Saturday. The Lady Knights lost 70-42. With the loss the Lady Knights fall to 7-9 on the season. The Lady Knights were trailing 25-13 at the half. The second half was no better than the first half as the Lady Knights could not find a rhythm to get a comeback started. Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Captain Erica Pisaturo (Smithfield, RI) scoring 12 points and Rajvi Jarvis (Stratford, CT) added eight points and 11 rebounds. Mercer’s Sam Foley and Alexis Sweet led all scorers with 17 points each. The Lady Knights next game will be Wednesday the 13th at 6:00pm when they will travel to Groton, CT to play Region XXI foe UConn-Avery Point.

Warwick, RI – January 11, 2010: The CCRI Knights men’s basketball team hosted the Vikings of Mercer County Community College from Trenton, NJ. The Knights defeated the Vikings 71-65. With the victory the Knights improve to 9-8 on the season. The Knights jumped out to a quick 17-2 lead in the opening minutes and maintained a 37-19 lead by halftime. The Vikings battled their way back into the game with three straight 3-pointers by Uros Kovacevic but the Knights Captains Pat Sturdahl (Exeter, RI) and Apollos Wade (Taunton, MA) made key free throws down the stretch to secure the Knights’ victory. Leading the way for the Knights was Co-Captain Pat Sturdahl (Exeter, RI) scoring a team-high 17 points with five assists and four steals and Esaie Touze (Providence, RI) charting a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Also having a big game were Mike Juarez (Cranston, RI) with 11 points and four rebounds, Mike Rivera (Boston, MA) added 10 points, four assists and three steals, and Co-Captain Apollos Wade added nine points and five assists. The Knights next game will be Saturday January 16th when the Knights face No. 1 ranked (NJCAA division II) Monroe Community College at 7:00pm as part of the CCRI Invitational Tournament.

Knights downed by Miami-Dade College 90-53

The CCRI Knights men's basketball team finished their Florida road trip by traveling to Miami, FL to play the NJCAA Division I Sharks Miami-Dade College. The Knights lost to the Sharks 90-53. With the loss the Knights fall to 8-8 on the season. The Knights were up against a very tall and talented international squad that included players from the United States, Columbia, Brazil and the Dominican Republic. The Knights played very well in the first half of the first half until Miami-Dade found their stride and were able to build a 46-20 lead by halftime. The Knights did not quit in the second half though they were up against a very tough opponent but never threatened the Sharks eventually losing by the final score of 90-53. Leading the way for the Knights was Esaie Touze (Providence, RI) charting a double-double scoring 14 points with 10 rebounds and Colin Burns (Chepachet, RI) added 16 points including three 3-pointers. The Knights next game will be Saturday the 9th when they host Mercer County Community College at 3:00pm.

Lady Knights fall to Miami-Dade College 66-45

The CCRI Lady Knights finished their Florida road trip by traveling to Miami, FL to play the NJCAA Division I Sharks of Miami-Dade College. The Lady Knights lost to the Sharks 66-45. With the loss the Lady Knights drop to 6-8 on the season. The Lady Knights played very hard but were up against a bigger team that also had athleticism. The Lady Knights were down 34-20 at the half. They played better in the second half but only manage to get within 11 points as Miami-Dade eased to the 66-45 victory. Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Captain Erica Pisaturo (Smithfield, RI) who scored 18 points, 13 in the second half, with eight rebounds and two assists followed by Rajvi Jarvis (Stratford, CT) who scored nine points with seven rebounds, two assists and two steals. The Lady Knights next game will be Saturday the 9th when they host Mercer County Community College at 1:00pm.

Lady Knights fall to Palm Beach pressure defense 74-42

The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team continued on their Florida road trip traveling to Lake Worth, FL to play the NJCAA Division I Panthers of Palm Beach Community College. The Lady Knights lost 74-42. With the loss the Lady Knights drop to 6-7 on the season. The Panthers utilized a full-court press from the beginning of the game which led to early Lady Knights' turnovers and easy baskets for Palm Beach eventually giving them the 47-24 halftime lead. The Lady Knights tried to find an answer in the second half but the Panthers' full-court pressure was just to much as they eased to the 74-42 victory. Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Lori Bergeron (Jaffrey, NH) with a team-high 13 points with four rebounds and two steals followed by Ashley Fry (South Kingstown, RI) who scored nine points and two assists. The Lady Knights will travel to Miami play the Sharks of Miami-Dade College on Sunday at 4:00pm.

Knights put up fight but fall to Palm Beach Community College 70-64

The CCRI Knights men's basketball team continued on their Florida road trip traveling to Lake Worth, FL to play the NJCAA Division I Panthers of Palm Beach Community College. The Knights lost a very hard fought contest 70-64. With the loss the Knights fall to 8-7 on the season. The Knights came out on fire taking a 23-15 lead 10 minutes into the first half leading from the opening tip and kept a slim 36-35 lead at halftime. Palm Beach took their first lead at the 13:30 mark. They battled back and forth and with just 1:00 left the score was tied 64-64 until Mike Weems sank a 3-pointer from the corner the Knights tried to answer but could not convert resulting in the Panthers winning by the final of 70-64. Leading the way for the Knights was Captain Apollos Wade (Taunton, MA) with 13 points, five rebounds, three assist and two steals followed by Colin Burns (Chepachet, RI) who scored 11 points all in the first half because he was battling a case of food poisoning. Also having a big game was Matt Chicarelli (North Smithfield, RI) scoring nine points with nine rebounds, Esaie Touze (Providence, RI) with eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds. In addition, Mike Juarez (Cranston, RI) added eight points eight rebounds and Pat Sturdahl (Exeter, RI) dished out 12 assists with three steals. The Knights travel to Miami to play Miami-Dade College on Sunday at 6:00pm.

Knights’ James Sylvestre Wins Ray Dwyer Invitational!

2007 Second Team All-American James Sylvestre (Lincoln, RI) pulled away to win the Ray Dwyer Invitational on Monday, his first race of the season, on his home course at the CCRI Flanagan Campus in Lincoln. Sylvestre was one of the bright spots for a team that finished in third place in the Ray Dwyer Invitational. Sylvestere ran a solid race with a time of 28.50. His main competition was James Vance from Johnson & Wales University the two were neck and neck for the first two thirds of the race before Sylvestre broke away during the last mile and a half to and finished almost 30 seconds ahead of Vance.

Another bright spot for the Knights was Chris Pereira (Cumberland, RI) who finished in the top 10 placing ninth in a time of 31:43. In addition, the Knights had three runners finish in the top 20 including Joshua Santos (Pawtucket, RI) who finished in 13th place in a time of 33:06, Chris Allegretta (Warwick, RI) who finished 16th in a time of 33:56, and Juan Vigay (Providence, RI) came in 17th in a time of 35:29. Rounding out the Knights’ runners was Nate Cabana (Cumberland, RI) who finished 23rd in a time of 40:28. As a team the Knights finished in third place.

The Knights are back in action this weekend at home when they host the Tri-State Invitational. The men’s race starts at 11:00am with the women’s race to start at 12noon.
