Sophomore Alexander Cavanagh (Middletown, RI) completed his CCRI career with signature victories in first singles and first doubles. With the victories, Cavanagh extended his regular-season career record at CCRI to 15-3 in singles and 16-1 in doubles. On top of that has been a great ambassador for the team and for the school. Alex is a fan favorite wherever he goes, and even most of his opponents have nothing but nice things to say about him, even after he has beaten them. Cavanagh has been a credit to the Knights over the past two seasons.

Head Coach Deb Panzica commented after the match “We completed our second-consecutive 7-2 regular-season in style, with a 6-3 victory, and characteristic hard work and perseverance. With three out of the nine matches going to a decisive third set, and with no-ad scoring that truly put the Timberwolves at the advantage (all of their matches have been no-ad, while only half of ours have been), the Knights battled through and carried the day in all three of the decisive third sets. It was a great win and a nice complement to finish the 2010 regular season”

Knights baseball on steady track to retain Region XXI title

The CCRI Knights baseball team has completed twenty-six of its forty-five game season compiling a promising 18-8 record thus far. The Knights are looking to hold on to the Region XXI crown, which they captured last year for the first time in six seasons. The Knights were at a similar 24-6 midway through the season last year, yet the 2010 squad is a team of almost entirely new faces returning only three players from the title holding team.

As CCRI’s ace and one of three returnees, Jim Dimon (Seymour, CT) has been a dominant force on the mound. Dimon finished his freshman season 6-3 and jumped onto several CCRI pitching record lists including an impressive 14th in single season strikeouts with sixty-six. Dimon continues to lead CCRI this season with a 4-2 record and a 1.79 ERA and forty-one strikeouts. Starting pitchers Sean Furney (Warwick, RI) and Joe Portukalian (Cranston, RI) have also given solid contributions on the mound. Furney is 2-1 with a team low 1.33 ERA while Portukalian is 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA. Freshmen relievers Dan Mahlstedt (Trumbull, CT) and Steve Larsson (Cranston, RI) have done a tremendous job out of the bullpen keeping games close and closer Chris Mann (West Warwick, RI) has notched four saves so far this season.

Freshman Justin Quinn (Subury, MA) is leading the team in most offensive categories along with playing a solid shortstop for the Knights. Quinn is batting an outstanding .402 and has carried CCRI at the plate with thirty-three hits, thirteen extra base hits, and twenty-four RBIs. Freshman Colin Morris (Trumbull, CT) has been a pleasant surprise offensively as has Anthony Tortolano (Exeter, RI). Morris is batting .358 while Tortolano, who had the game winning home run against rival UConn Avery Point this weekend, is hitting .462.

Defensively, catchers Raniel Valentin (San Juan, Puerto Rico) and Mike Saccoccio (Cranston, RI) have stepped up tremendously behind the plate. Freshman Lyle Williams (St. Augustine, FL) has also been steady in right field for the Knights.

Head Coach Ken Hopkins stresses the importance of more consistent hitting and hopes the return of injured Brent Hopkins (Cranston, RI) will solidify CCRI’s offense. “We’ve got to continue to get solid pitching, solid defense, and timely hitting. Our offense has looked inept at times and we need to be more productive against good pitching to get deep into the playoffs.”

CCRI split with both Region XXI opponents Dean College and Uconn Avery Point in the first half of the season and will host Dean College on April 24th in a doubleheader beginning at noon and UConn Avery Point on May 1st also in a doubleheader at noon.

Game 1
CCRI-11 Holyoke CC-0
On the Mound for the Lady Knights Co-Captain Marian Long (Warwick, RI) put forth a record-setting performance. Long threw her second consecutive perfect game, throwing five perfect innings and striking out seven Cougar batters. The seven strikeouts give Marian 82 on the season breaking the single season strikeout record of 80 set by Jen Dupont in 2005. The victory improves Long’s record to 12-1 on the season which ties her for two more records: 12 wins ties her with the single season mark held by Lori Lemoi from 1984 and her 17 career wins ties her with Jen Dupont over the 2005 and 2006 seasons, with her next victory giving her those records all to herself. Marian also went 1-2 with an RBI in the game.

At the plate for the Lady Knights Co-Captain Steph Morse (Warwick, RI) was 3-3 and set her own record by blasting her eighth Home Run of the season a new single-season record breaking the record of seven set by Amanda Ward in 2004. Morse was 3-3 with a Home Run, a double, five RBIs and three runs scored. Steph was followed by Kaela-Rose Gentile (Glocester, RI) who was 3-3 with two runs scored. Amanda Marble (Warwick, RI) was 2-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored, Jasmyn McCone (Taunton, MA) was 2-3 with a run scored while Nicole Kufel (Oradell, NJ) added a hit and three runs scored and Casey Doyle (Warwick, RI) a hit one RBI and a run scored.
