The Community College of Rhode Island softball team (14-2) will face No. 18 ranked Mercyhurst North East (27-12) from North East Pennsylvania this weekend in the District I Championship. The Lady Knights are just two wins away from making their first trip to the NJCAA Division II Softball National Tournament. The Championship will be a best of three with the first game starting at noon on Saturday May 2nd, the second game will follow at 2pm on Saturday and if there need to be a game three it will be Sunday May 3rd at 10am. This will be the Lady Knights toughest test to date as they will be facing their first ranked team this year. Mercyhurst comes into the game with an impressive .333 batting average ranking them No. 27 by the NJCAA. However, the Lady Knights are currently ranked No. 2 by the NJCAA with a remarkable .427 batting average. The Lady Knights’ pitching staff led by Co-Captains Courtney St. Germain (Lincoln, RI) and Marian Long (Warwick, RI) will have their work cut out for them trying to slow down the Mercyhurst bats. Both St. Germain and Long come into the Championship with identical 6-1 records and are among the nations’ top pitchers. St. Germain is ranked No. 22 in pitching with an impressive 1.58 ERA and is ranked No. 24 in strikeouts with 40 strikeouts in 40 innings pitched for and average of one strikeout an inning. Long is ranked No.38 in pitching with a 2.00 ERA and is ranked No.9 in the nation in strikeouts with 43 strikeouts in 35 innings for an average of 1.24 strikeouts per inning. Mercyhurst will counter with their pitching ace Katie Ives who is ranked No. 47 in strikeouts with 119 strikeouts in 140.2 innings for an average of .85 strikeouts per inning. The Championship should be an exciting battle of excellent pitching against potent offensive line-ups.
The winner of the Championship will earn a berth in the NJCAA Division II National Championship May 14th-17th in Bloomington, IL.
Four Knights put forth great showing at Brown University Spring Invitational!
On Sunday four Knights participated in the Brown University Spring Invitational. Only four Knights qualified to participate in this competition.
One of the Knights that qualified was Everett LaMountain (Smithfield, MA) who ran a season best time in the 1500 meters of 4 minutes 15 seconds which was good enough for 31st place. LaMountain came back and ran a solid 800 meters in 2:02.65 good for 29th place. The Knights had one more runner running on Sunday and that was Mike Fernandes (Providence, RI) who finished in 19th place in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.05 and 15th place in the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.27.
In the field events the Knights were also very successful. It first started with Mike Fernandes who finished in 19th place in the javelin with a throw of 43.51 meters followed Joe Frederickson (Scituate, RI) who placed 27th with a throw of 33.85 meters. Frederickson also placed 22nd in the discus with a throw of 26.71 meters. Knights’ Phillips has solid day with 6th place finish!
On Friday the Community College of Rhode Island men’s golf team participated in a match at the Ledges Golf Club the home golf course of Springfield Technical Community College in North Hadley, MA. The winner of the team competition was Greenfield Community College from Greenfield, MA while the winner of the individual round was Greg Strattner of Holyoke CC with a wonderful score of two under par. The CCRI Knights as a team finished in 4th place moving their season recorded to 4-3 on the season.
The Community College of Rhode Island’s Matt Phillips (Cranston, RI) shot a solid round of 78 (+7) which was good enough for a sixth place finish. Other Knights scores were Nick Oaklund (North Kingston, RI) with an 84, George Gingell (Burrillville, RI) 85, Jeremy O’Conner (North Kingston, RI) 85, Mark Silva (North Providence, RI) 95 and Ben Norton (Johnston, RI) 115.
Head Coach Richard Marchetti said after the match “This was a good effort by
our golfers today. Our scores as a team has been steadily lower each match and
we have gotten more competitive. This is a good sign as we inch closer to the
regional tournament.”
The Knights are back on the course Tuesday afternoon when they host a match at Cranston Country Club which begins at noon time.
Knights split doubleheader with Dean to bring record to 26-7 on the season
The CCRI Knights baseball team split a doubleheader with the Bulldogs of Dean College winning the first game 1-0 and losing the second game 10-2. With the split the Knights’ record now stands at 26-7 and 10-3 in Region XXI play.
Game 1
CCRI-1 Dean-0
On the mound for the Knights Dave Krasnowiecki (Cranston, RI) was a man on a
mission throwing seven completely dominant innings allowing no runs on just one
single hit walking one and striking out 10 Bulldog batters. Krasnowiecki was
extremely efficient throwing just 77 pitches in his remarkable outing that
lasted just an hour a fifteen minutes, a far cry form those four hour Red Sox
games that were on all weekend.
Game 22
CCRI-2 Dean-10
On the mound for the Knights Jim Dimon (Seymour, CT) had a rough outing lasting
just three and a third innings allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits,
walking one and striking out three to take the loss bringing his record to 3-3.
Dimon was relived by AJ Rataic (East Hartford, CT) who did not fare much better
throwing two and two thirds innings allowing six earned runs on eight hits,
walking one and striking gout five batters. Matt Thadeio (West Greenwich, RI)
threw one scoreless inning striking out three.
At the plate for the Knights Corey McDonald (Hudson, MA) was 1-3 with an RBI, Co-Captain Kyle Borden (Lincoln, RI) was 1-2 with a double and a run scored and Mike Mahoney (Warwick, RI) went 1-3 with a run scored. Not the best game for the Knights but they do finish their series with Dean College with a 3-1 advantage.
The Knights are back in action Wednesday the 29th when they host Eastern Connecticut JV at 4pm.
St. Germain and Kufel lead Lady Knights to fourth consecutive Region XXI Title!
The CCRI Lady Knights softball team defeated the Lady Warriors of Massasoit
Community College in The Region XXI Championship winning the first two games of
a best of three series 16-0 and 2-1. With the victories the Lady Knights improve
to 14-2 on the season winning their 14th game in a row while finishing
undefeated in Region XXI for the second straight year.
Game 1
CCRI-16 Massasoit CC-0
On the mound for the Lady Knights Courtney St. Germain (Lincoln, RI) set the
CCRI All-time shutout mark with her 9th career shutout. St. Germain broke the
record of eight shutouts by Jen Dupont set over the 2005-06 seasons. She pitched
five dominant innings allowing just three hits and striking out eight to improve
her record to 6-1 on the season. St. Germain was lights-out and had plenty of
offense to keep her comfortable in the circle.
Offensively Nicole Kufel (Riverdell, NJ) went 4-4 with two doubles, two
singles, four RBI and three runs scored followed by Stephanie Morse (Warwick,
RI) who went 3-3 with a double, two singles a walk, two RBI and two runs scored
and Kaela-Rose Gentile (Glocester, RI) was 3-4 with a double, two singles, an
RBI and four runs scored to lead the 13-hit Lady Knight attack. Also
contributing for the Lady Knights offense was Daina Lamb (Cranston, RI) with a
single, two RBI, a run scored and a walk while reaching base four times, St.
Germain helped her own cause adding a single, three runs scored and a walk,
Brittany Annunziata (Smithfield, RI) added a single and a run scored while
calling a great game behind the plate and Co-Captain Julie Paradis (Lincoln, RI)
added an RBI, two runs scored and two sacrifices.
Game 2
CCRI-2 Massasoit CC-1
On the mound for the Lady Knights Casey Doyle (Warwick, RI) got the start she
gave up one run on one hit, walking three and striking out one. Doyle left with
a 2-1 lead and was relieved by Marian Long (Warwick, RI) who was excellent over
4 1/3 innings allowing no runs on just one hit striking out five to get the
victory and improve her record to 6-1. Doyle and Long combined to throw a
two-hitter setting the tone for the Lady Knights in the second game.
Unlike the first game of the Championship game two was full of excitement and
excellent softball. All three pitchers: Marian Long, Casey Doyle and Ashley
Fellaccio from Massasoit were dealing and got plenty of terrific defensive play
to back them up. Defensively for the Lady Knights they got great contributions
from Shanon Duffy who made a spectacular diving catch in the third inning to
keep the Warriors off the scoreboard and Courtney St. Germain who made a run
saving diving grab at third base in the bottom of the fifth inning to keep the
Lady Knights ahead 2-1. For Massasoit Joneiha Veiga made play after play at
shortstop to keep the Warrior in the game. In addition, in the bottom of the
seventh inning Massasoit CC was threatening as the got a runner on first with
one out then Courtney Johnson slugged a double to left-center to put runners at
second and third with one out. From there Marian Long kicked it into another
gear getting a strikeout and after a long battle with Warriors lead-off batter
Treasa O’Neil she finally got her to fly out to, whom else but Nicole Kufel who
secured the ball for the final out of the Championship!
Offensively Nicole Kufel continued her career day as a Lady Knights going 2-3
including the eventual game-winning two run home run in the top of the third
inning adding a single. That brought her Championship performance to 6-7 on the
day including a home run, two doubles, three singles, five RBI and four runs
scored! Adding to the Lady Knights’ attack was Co-Captain Julie Paradis going
2-4 with two singles; Shanon Duffy (Taunton, MA) going 2-3 with two singles and
Marian Long helped herself to her first career triple. In addition, Caitlin
Montella (Warwick, RI), Daina Lamb, and Stephanie Morse each added a single.
That was all the offense that Doyle and Long needed to secure the victory.
The Lady Knights will host the District I Tournament next weekend at Winslow Park in Warwick. The Lady Knights will face Region III representative Mercyhurst North East (27-12) from North East Pennsylvania. The championship begins with game one on Saturday May 2nd at noon and game two to follow at 2pm. If there needs to be a game three it will be Sunday May 3rd at 10am.
Knights finish regular season with seventh straight win with Nationals in their sights!
The Community College of Rhode Island traveled to Region III to take on the Mohawk Valley Community College Hawks in Utica, NY. Having extended their win streak to six on Saturday the Knights looked to hand Coach John Panzica his longest winning steak in his four years at the helm of the Knights on Sunday. Just like Sunday the Knights took care of business early on in the match and secured victory by winning all six double matches. The overall score on the day was 7-1 and the Knights improved the regular season recorded to 7-2 on the season.
CCRI took to the courts against the Mohawk Valley Community College Hawks in
the final regular season match of the Knights 2009 season. Alexander Cavanagh
(Middletown, RI) faced off against Stephen Bentley in first singles. Cavanagh,
who hasn’t lost since a 3-set singles since he was defeat in the second match of
the season, was looking to finish the season strong. Cavanagh jumped out to a
quick 5-1 lead in the first set, but Bentley battled back to get the next three
games. Cavanagh regrouped and broke Bentley to take the first set 6-4. He then
secured the match with a 6-3 second set victory. Nathan York (Smithfield, RI)
jumped out to a 3-0 lead but then tweaked a nagging shoulder injury and dropped
the next four games. He received some treatment from the Mohawk valley trainer,
which seemed to do the trick, as he won nine out of the next ten games to secure
a 6-4, 6-1 second-singles win over a very talented, and extremely gracious,
Thanh Nguyen. Michael Wilbur (Scituate, RI) faced Masanari Matsumoto in third
singles. Wilbur was able to defeat Matsumoto by the score of 6-3, 6 0. Daniel
Rivard (Scituate, RI) finished the season strong, defeating Chris Stefanic 6 4,
6-3. Fifth singles saw Christopher Izzo defeat Josh Darrow 6-1, 6-1. Ryan Lavoie
(Coventry, RI) picked up his first singles point of his college career as he
dispatched James Zielinski in six singles, 6-1, 6-3.
The ITA JUCO Men’s division III #1 ranked first singles team of Alexander Cavanagh and Nathan York finished their quest for regular-season perfection, dispatching the Hawks first doubles team of Thanh Nguyen and Masanari Matsumoto 8-2 in a contest that was much closer than the score indicates. Nguyen is a solid player and Matsumoto just lacks consistency. Both of the Hawks play big ground strokes and have good serves. Cavanagh and York’s experience playing all season together proved to be the difference as they were able to take advantage of positioning and key points to defeat their opponents. It the other doubles action Wilbur and Rivard teamed up in second doubles to defeat Stefanic and Bentley 8-3, while Lavoie and Izzo teamed up in third doubles, dropping a heart-breaker 9-8 (7-4 in the tiebreak) to Darrow and Mike Wilson.
Head Coach John Panzica said after the match, “Today’s match was our seventh consecutive match victory after starting 0-2. The guys really had a couple of battles on their hands, especially at the top of the lineup. It was a very hot weekend and we didn’t play our best, but still managed to come away with the wins. All-in-all it was a terrific win to cap a terrific regular season. We look forward to our trip to the NJCAA DIII Men’s Tennis nationals, May 9-14 in Plano, Texas at host college Collin County Community College.”
The Knights have some much need time off to get healthy and rest up before they make a trip on May 9th to Plano, Texas for the opportunity to win a National Championship.
Knights win sixth straight to improve to 6-2 on the season!
The Community College of Rhode Island traveled to Region III to take on the Herkimer County Community College Generals in Utica, NY. The Knights were looking to continue their recent form and hoping to extend their match win streak to six in a row. The Knights secured an 8-1 overall victory to improve there season record to 6-2.
CCRI took to the courts against the Herkimer County Community College Generals in the eighth match of the Knights 2009 season. The earlier reports of the strength of the top two players for the Generals were right on point. Alexander Cavanagh (Middletown, RI) faced-off against Corey Zoutman in first singles. Zoutman, a favorite for the Region III tournament, had just come off a couple of great regional victories and was looking to continue his form. Cavanagh, who hasn’t lost since a 3-set singles defeat in the second match of the season, also didn’t want to give anything away. Zoutman grabbed the early advantage and raced out to a 6-1 first set victory. Cavanagh battled back to even the match with a 7-5 second-set success. The two battled, trading breaks of serve throughout the third before Cavanagh was ultimately able to defeat Zoutman, 1-6, 7-5, 6-4. Nathan York (Smithfield, RI) posted a fairly easy first-set win and then overcame a 3-0 deficit in the second to secure a 6-2, 6-4 second-singles win over Kazuyuki Matsunaga. Michael Wilbur (Scituate, RI) faced Hiroki Yatake in third singles, dispatching him with a score of 6-4, 6-3. Daniel Rivard (Scituate, RI) got back to his winning ways, defeating Ron Costanza 6-0, 6-2. Fifth singles produced the lone defeat on the day, as James Lachance (Cranston, RI) battled before falling to Mike Carcione 6-7 (7-5), 6-2, 6-3. Christopher Izzo (Warwick, RI) clinched sixth singles, defeating Ron Fox 6-1, 6-2 to complete the singles.
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association Junior College Men’s Division III No.1 ranked first singles team of Alexander Cavanagh and Nathan York continued their quest for perfection, dispatching the Generals first doubles team in a contest of breaks of serve that saw the Knights broken early and trailing as late as 4-5 on Herkimer’s serve. The Knights, however, were able to regroup under York’s experience and Cavanagh’s on court calm and leadership, to win four of the last five games. They served for the match at 7-5, but York, who served on the more difficult side, was broken on a “no-ad” (no advantage), deuce point – in no-ad scoring, the winner is the first to four points – at 3-3 the receivers pick the court of return and the point is winner take all. At 7-6, though, Herkimer’s Zoutman had to switch to the more difficult side to serve (because of a difficult sun), and was easily broken by the Knights 4-1. The victory secured the match 8-6, and preserved Cavanagh and York’s undefeated record.
In other doubles action CCRI’s Wilbur and Rivard teamed up in second doubles
to defeat Yatake and Costanza 8-4 while Lachance and Izzo teamed up to defeat
Fox and Corey Green 8-2 in third doubles.
Head Coach John Panzica said after the game, “This was a solid victory to continue our recent momentum and to post our sixth straight victory after opening the season 0-2. The guys showed that they plan to keep up their recent form. We look forward to our next, and final regular season match, against Mohawk Valley Community College”
The Knights are back in action on Sunday April 26th when the go to Utica, NY to face Mohawk Valley Community College.
Go Knights!

McMaster put forth a nice effort supported by a 12-hit Knights’ attack that allowed them to cruise to the victory.
At the plate for the Knights Corey McDonald (Hudson, MA) led the way going 2-2 with a home run a double, three RBI and two runs scored. Also having a big game at the plate was Colt McCutcheon (St. Augustine, FL) who went 3-3 with two doubles, a single, two RBI and two runs scored and Anthony Vinci (Trumbull, CT) who went 2-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

CCRI’s Matt Phillips (Cranston, RI) had a very good showing finishing in
third place with a round of 85. The CCRI other individual scores were George
Gingell (Burrillville, RI) 91, Mark Silva 97 (North Providence, RI), Nick
Oaklund (North Kingstown, RI) 98, Jeremy O'Connor (North Kingstown, RI)100 and

Game 1
CCRI-4 UCAP-3
On the mound for the Knights AJ Rataic (East Hartford, CT) remained perfect on
the season running his record to 6-0. Rataic threw seven strong innings allowing
just three earned runs to as very strong UCAP line-up on 13 hits, three walks
while striking out three batters. This was a very strong outing for the Knights
ace though he gave up 13 hits he was able to keep the Knights in the game and
eventually secure the victory against a very potent UCAP line-up.
At the plate for the Knights Lou Tarantino (Trumbull, CT) hit his team-leading fifth home run driving in three runs to help lead the Knights to victory. Tarantino was helped by Colt McCutcheon (St. Augustine, FL) who was 1-3 with an RBI and a run scored, Joe Correia (Burrillville, RI) went 1-3 with a run scored and Anthony Vinci (Trumbull, CT) went 1-1 with a run scored. The Knights took the first game in the doubleheader and will look for the sweep in game two.
Game 2
CCRI-2 UCAP-4
On the mound for the Knights Jim Dimon (Seymour, CT) was the tough luck loser in
game two throwing six solid innings allowing four runs, three earned, on six
hits, walking four and striking out seven to run his record to 3-2 on the
season. Dimon kept the Knights in the game but they could not score enough runs
to get him the victory.
At the Plate for the Knights Co-Captain Kyle Borden (Lincoln, RI) went 2-3 with a double an RBI and a run scored followed by Corey McDonald (Hudson, MA) who went 2-3 with a double and an RBI and Anthony Vinci (Trumbull, CT) went 2-3. A solid effort by the Knights was just not enough to get the job done in game two but getting a split at Avery Point is nothing to hang your head about.
The Knights are back in action Tuesday night when they will travel to Willimantic, CT to take on Eastern Connecticut JV at 7:00pm.

Knights take down Timberwolves to win fifth in a row and improve to 5-2 on the season!
The Community College of Rhode Island traveled to Region III to take on the Adirondack Community College (ACC) Timberwolves in Queensbury, NY. The Knights defeated the Timberwolves 7-2 to improve their record to 5-2 on the season.
The Knights were looking to continue their recent form and hoping to extend their match win streak to five in a row. Starting with singles, the Knights took to the courts and for the second match in a row, took four singles positions. The Knights needed just one of the doubles positions to consolidate the victory. However, the Knights weren’t satisfied with just one point in doubles. The first doubles pair of Alex Cavanagh (Middletown, RI) and Nate York (Smithfield, RI) took care of the clinching point, winning 8-0 in less than 15 minutes to continue their season perfect. Both second doubles and third doubles prevailed as well, securing a 7-2 overall victory. With the win the Knights improve their season record to 5-2, guaranteeing a winning record this season, their first since 2003 under then coach, now CCRI Director of Athletics Joe Pavone.
The Knights took to the courts against the Adirondack Community College Timberwolves in the seventh match of the 2009 season. Alexander Cavanagh (Middletown, RI) faced-off against Chris O’Hearn in first singles, dispatching him 6-4, 6-3. For positions 2-5, three sets was the theme of the day! Nathan York (Smithfield, RI) defeated Kellen Henderson in second singles see-saw battle, prevailing 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. Michael Wilbur (Scituate, RI) faced Joshua Schoenstedt in an odd third singles contest, defeating him in a score of 6-2, 1-6, 6-1. Daniel Rivard (Scituate, RI) succumbed 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to Christopher Olden. Fifth singles also struggled as James Lachance (Cranston, RI) battled before falling to Brandon Haller 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Christopher Izzo (Warwick, RI) dispatched Mark Connor 6-0, 6-3 to complete the singles. Ryan Lavoie (Coventry, RI) and Javier Juarez (Cranston, RI) both participated in exhibition singles. Lavoie picked up his first singles win of the season, posting an impressive 6-2, 6-2 win over Jedidiah Mead. Juarez and ACC’s James Farrell elected to play a pro-set, which ended with Juarez narrowly defeating Farrell, 9-8 (7-5)

The ITA Junior College Men’s Division III No.1 ranked first doubles team of Alexander Cavanagh and Nathan York continued their quest for perfection, dispatching the Timberwolves first doubles team of O’Hearn and Schoenstedt, 8-0 in impressive fashion. Chris Izzo remarked of the match, “I didn’t know what was going on in (first singles). You started playing, and then 5 minutes later I looked over and you were off the court. I thought you were just taking a water break, but you never went back?!” The match actually took 15 minutes, but Izzo was playing in his third doubles match at the time so it’s easy to see how it looked so quick to him.
Head Coach John Panzica commented after the victory: “This was a solid
victory to continue our recent momentum and to post our fifth straight victory
after opening the season 0-2. The guys showed that they plan to keep up their
recent form. We look forward to our next match against Herkimer Community
College in Herkimer, NY, Saturday, April 25th. Herkimer is reported to have
solid No. 1 and No. 2 singles, that also team up for a formidable No. 1 doubles.
This should really be a very stern test for our guys.”

Ryan Lavoie (Coventry, RI), making his first start of the season, competed valiantly, and dropping the match 6-3 and 7-5 to Davis.
