Knights Split Doubleheader with Dean Losing 3-0 and Winning 11-0 to Advance to Region Championship!

The CCRI Knights baseball team knew they only needed to win one of the games in their doubleheader versus Dena College on Saturday to advance to the Region XXI Championship versus UConn-Avery Point. The Knights made it interesting as they lost the first contest 3-0 but rebounded in a big way by bashing their way past the Bulldogs 11-0 in the second game. With the doubleheader split the Knights record now stands at 20-12 on the season and 10-5 in Region XXI. Also they advance to the best-of-three Region XXI Championship series to be played at UConn-Avery Point game one Friday at 3:00pm, game two Saturday at 1:00pm, game three Sunday at 1:00pm and the rain date is Monday.

Game one: CCRI-0 Dean-3

On the mound for the Knights Bobby Swann (Cumberland, RI) lost his first game of the season though he pitched very well throwing six strong innings allowing three runs on six hits, walking four and striking out eight Bulldog batters. With the loss Swann’s record drops to 4-1 on the season.

At the plate for the Knights they were pretty much held in check but Kyle Borden (Lincoln, RI) was 1-2 with a double.

Game two: CCRI-11 Dean-0

On the mound for the Knights Warren Sternberg (North Kingstown, RI) had another outstanding outing pitching five stellar innings allowing just two hits and walking one while striking out seven Bulldog batters to improve his overall record to 5-3 on the season. Sternberg has been virtually un-hittable over his last three appearances and is getting hot at the right time for the Knights as they move towards post-season play.

At the plate for the Knights Co-Captain George Tager (North Providence, RI) led the offensive onslaught going 2-3 with two RBI and a run scored followed by Nick Simon (Pawtucket, RI) who was 1-3 with a double, three RBI and a run scored and Sean Arlan (East Providence, RI) was 1-1 with a double, an RBI and two walks. Lady Knights Down Dean but Can’t Overcome Orange County in Region XXI Final

The CCRI Lady Knights softball team defeated the Region XXI rival Bulldogs of Dean College 8-1 in the finals of the loser’s bracket of the Region XXI tournament on Sunday morning 8-1. With the victory the Lady Knights secure their third straight Region XXI title. However, in order to make it to the Northeast district championship they would have to defeat the Colts of Orange County CC twice. Unfortunately that did not happen as the Lady Knights lost in Game one of the Region XXI Tournament Championship 6-1. With the victory the Colts will now host the northeast District Championship next weekend. The Lady Knights end the season with a 17-6 overall record and a perfect 14-0 record versus Region XXI opponents.

Loser’s Bracket Final: CCRI-8 Dean-1

Alyssa Gering (West Warwick, RI) charted her second Region XXI victory of the year and her first in the Region XXI tournament as she was able to hold the Bulldog’s bats in check. Gering pitched seven very strong innings allowing just one run on four hits, walking two and striking out four Bulldog batters. This was an excellent outing for Alyssa though she found herself in trouble quickly as the first batter hit a blooper single to right field and the second batter laced an opposite field triple to plate the game’s first run. Both balls looked like there could have been plays on them, and assistant coach Liz Afonso called a time out to have a defensive conference with her outfielders telling them to play more aggressively. The message was received well by the Lady Knights as they got out of the inning with no further damage thanks in great part to a double play on a ball hit to Co-Captain Lindsay Johnston (Pawtucket, RI) who dealt to Caitlin Montella (Warwick, RI) for one out and she fired to Daina Lamb (Cranston, RI) to cut the runner down at home plate. Gering was never in any other real trouble after that point as her defense stood strong behind her and she pitched two-hit ball for the remainder of the game.

At the plate for the Lady Knights Co-Captain Lindsay Johnston was 3-4 with two RBI and three runs scored highlighted by a first inning inside the park two-run homerun and a stolen base, followed by Caitlin Montella who was 2-2 including a double with two RBI and a stolen base, and Alison Balzano (Warwick, RI) who was 2-3 with two runs scored. Also having a good game at the plate was Daina Lamb who was 2-2 with an RBI and a run scored, Co-Captain Jenna Bassett (Warwick, RI) who was 1-3 with a double and a run scored and Alyssa Gering helped her own cause going 1-2 with an RBI, a run scored and a sacrifice.

This victory puts the Lady Knights in the Region XXI Tournament Championship versus Orange County CC.

Region XXI Tournament Championship Game: CCRI-1 Orange County CC-6

For the second day in a row Lady Knights’ pitching ace Courtney St. Germain (Lincoln, RI) had to face the powerful line-up of Orange County CC. This task was much harder the second day for St. Germain as the Colts all had seen her three to four times on Saturday and that helped them at the plate. St. Germain remained tough but came-up on the short end of the stick as she gave up six runs, five earned on seven hits, walking four and striking out two over five plus innings taking the loss. She was relieved by Kristie Frydryk (Palmer, MA) who pitched a scoreless sixth. Both pitchers pitched well but go very little run support to help their efforts.

At the plate for the Lady Knights they were led by Ashley Mangione (Warwick, RI) who was 2-4 with two doubles and a run scored and Caitlin Montella (Warwick, RI) who was 2-3. Also contributing for the Lady Knights was Daina Lamb (Cranston, RI) and Co-Captain Jenna Bassett (Warwick, RI) who each added a hit and Co-Captain Julie Paradis (Lincoln, RI) had the lone Lady Knight RBI.

This was a tough loss for the Lady Knights who just couldn’t string enough hits together to score any runs, even the balls they hit well were fielded and great plays were made by the Colts. The Lady Knights have nothing to hang their heads over they put forth a game effort but just could not get over the hump to beat the Colts.

Knight’s and Lady Knight’s have Solid Day at Brown Open

On Sunday the Knights and Lady Knights competed in the Brown Open on the campus of Brown University.

The CCRI Knights Dennis LaFleur (Coventry, RI) came alive on Sunday in the sprint events. In his first event the 100m dash, LaFleur ran a career best 11.75 to place 11th at the 2008 Brown Spring Time Invitational. LaFleur took an amazing .50 seconds off his season best in the event and .25 off his career best of 12.00. However, Dennis was not done he also led the charge of a gallant effort by the Knights 4x400m squad with a time of 52.00. The 4x400m team placed 7th in a time of 3:37.85 only .43 off the qualifying mark of 3:37.42. Other members of this relay team were Cory Rocha (Riverside, RI), Mark Kollie (Providence, RI) and distance ace James Sylvestre (Lincoln, RI). Despite not qualifying yet the team will have one more shot to meet the mark this coming Saturday at the NJCAA Northeast District Championships.

The Knights came even closer to sending a 4x800m rely team to the National Championship. The Men ran a composite time of 8:51.96. The composite standard to make it to the Championship is 8:51.86. The composite standard is when four separate athletes on your squad run the 800 meter event at an official meet and their combined time adds up to the qualifying mark. It is an option only in the 4x800m relay because it is not an offered event at many spring track invitational. The four men missed by .10 seconds. Despite not having qualified, have no fear, the Knights will have three of the men run the 800m race at the Northeast Districts and odds are one of them will take off .10 seconds from their time. The team was made up of James Sylvestre placed 25th in 2:05.02, Cory Rocha placed 31st in 2:10.78, Dave Pelkey (Cranston, RI) placed 36th in 2:17.22 and Chris Allegretta (Warwick, RI) just behind him in 37th in a time of 2:18.94. Freshman Mark Kollie was another Knight who had a super day on the track for the men’s team. Kollie ran a personal-best in the 100m dash with a time of 11.96 which was good enough for 13th place.

On the women’s side Lady Knight Amanda Kelley (Cumberland, RI) finished in 6th place in the discus throw with a throw of 36.30m and placed 15th in the javelin with a throw of 31.51m. The only Lady Knight runner was Kristin Vanhouwe (North Smithfield, RI) who ran in the 1,500m race placing 38th in a time of 5:33.81.

The Knight’s and Lady Knight’s Track teams will have one more opportunity to qualify for Nationals next weekend in the Northeast District Championship meet. The meet will begin this Friday at 10:00 am at Howard Community College in Columbia, MD.

Go Knight’s and Lady Knight’s!

In game two of the tournament Orange County CC defeated Dean College 8-1. In game three the Dean College defeated Holyoke CC 5-4. In game four the finals of the winner’s bracket Orange County CC defeated the Lady Knights 5-2. With the win and the loss the Lady Knights ran their win-streak to 15 games and their season record now stands at 16-5. Here are the re-caps of the two Lady Knights’ games.

Game one: CCRI-8 Holyoke CC-0

On the mound for the Lady Knights Kristie Frydryk (Palmer, MA) was remarkable throwing five innings of one hit ball allowing no runs, walking one and striking out a season-high seven Cougar batters. Frydryk saved her best performance of the year for the Region XXI Tournament and in the process lowered her ERA top just 1.97. Frydryk is now 7-2 on the season and has yet to lose to a Region XXI opponent with a perfect 7-0 record against them.

At the plate for the Lady Knights they were led by Co-Captain Jenna Bassett (Warwick, RI) who was 2-3 with a homerun three RBI and a runs scored. Bassett’s third inning two-run blast helped break the game open for the Lady Knights as part of their six run third. Also having a good day at the plate for the Lady Knights was Alison Balzano (Warwick, RI) who was 2-2 with a run scored, an RBI and a sacrifice, Co-Captain Julie Paradis (Lincoln, RI) who was 1-3 with two RBI and a run scored, and Caitlin Montella (Warwick, RI) was 1-2 with a run scored.

This was a great win for the Lady Knights with everyone contributing including a dominating performance on the mound by Kristie Frydryk, some great defense and a towering homerun by Co-Captain Jenna Bassett.

Game three: CCRI-2 Orange County CC-5

Orange county CC advanced to the winner’s bracket final by defeating Dean College in game two which set-up the showdown between the Lady Knights and the Colts.

On the mound for the Lady Knights Courtney St. Germain (Lincoln, RI) had the unenviable task of trying to shut-down the tremendously potent Colts line-up. St. Germain pitched very well throwing seven strong innings allowing five runs, three earned on five hits and walking six. The Colts showed tremendous patience at the plate and battled hard making it a very difficult outing for St. Germain who battled right back to kept the Lady Knights in the game unfortunately the Lady Knights couldn’t put enough offense together to help her strong outing on the mound.

At the plate for the Lady Knights Daina Lamb (Cranston, RI) went 2-2 with a run scored followed by Co-Captain Julie Paradis (Lincoln, RI) who went 2-3 with a double and a sacrifice. Also having a good game at the plate was Alison Balzano (Warwick, RI) who went 1-3 with an RBI and Courtney St. Germain helped her own cause also going 1-3 with an RBI.

This was a tough loss for the Lady Knights who did not play badly but did not play their best game and in order to beat Orange County they are going to have play to the best of their abilities which is something they will look forward to doing. In order to get another shot at Orange County the Lady Knights will have to defeat the Bulldogs of Dean College Sunday at 10AM. If the Lady Knights defeat Dean College they will be the Region XXI Champions because Orange is from Region III, but in order to advance to the Northeast District Championship and play the Region XV Champions next weekend they will have to defeat the Colts twice on Sunday. If the Lady Knights beat Dean College they will play Orange County at 1PM and if they win, they will play winner take all at 3PM.

The Lady Knights found themselves in an old fashioned slugfest with Pride of Springfield JV. This was the first time since their Florida road trip that Lady Knights’ pitchers found themselves on the receiving end of some very hostile bats. This was a hard fought battle that felt really good for the Lady Knights to win.

Game two: CCRI-14 Springfield JV-5

Kristie Frydryk (Palmer, MA) was also under the gun with the very potent Pride line-up as they were able to jump on the scoreboard with two runs in the first and a single run in the second, third and fourth but was able to shut them down in the fifth as the Lady Knights were able to amass 14 runs and end the game by the mercy rule. Frydryk gave up five runs, four earned over five innings on seven hits walking one and striking out three. This was a very good outing for Frydryk against a very powerful Pride line-up.

At the plate for the Lady Knights Co-Captain Julie Paradis (Lincoln, RI) led the way going a perfect 4-4 with three runs scored and an RBI followed by Co-Captain Lindsay Johnston (Pawtucket, RI) who was 2-3 with a double, four RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base and Alison Balzano (Warwick, RI) went 2-3 with three runs scored, an RBI, and a stolen base. Lady Knights Finish Region XXI 12-0 with 10-1 and 6-1 Victories over Massasoit CC!

The CCRI Lady Knights softball team defeated the Warriors of Massasoit CC 10-1 and 6-1. With the doubleheader sweep the Lady Knights have won 12 straight games and finish the Region XXI regular season a perfect 12-0 and 13-4 overall.

Game one: CCRI-10 Massasoit-1

Courtney St. Germain (Lincoln, RI) earned her seventh victory of the year and moved to a perfect 6-0 in Region XXI play. St. Germain threw five excellent innings allowing one earned run on four hits and three strikeouts. The only bad news for Courtney was that she gave up her first earned run in Region XXI play which raised her Region XXI ERA to .219 and her overall ERA to 1.11. However, those numbers are simply spectacular given the tough competition that the Lady Knights face. St. Germain is on pace to shatter the CCRI sing-season ERA record of 1.51 set by Jen Dupont in 2005.

At the plate for the Knights Co-Captain Jenna Bassett (Warwick, RI) went 3-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI followed by fellow Co-Captain Lindsay Johnston (Pawtucket, RI) was 1-3 with an RBI and a ruin scored. Also adding a hit to the Lady Knights attack was Alison Balzano (Warwick, RI) who was 1-2 with a run scored, Co-Captain Julie Paradis (Lincoln, RI) was 1-3 with a run scored and Ashley Mangione (Warwick, RI) was also 1-3 with a run scored. Gering pitched seven strong innings allowing one unearned run on four hits, walking one and striking out two. Alyssa lowered her season ERA to 3.39 while having a 0.00 ERA in Region XXI play. This was a spectacular debut for the Lady Knights freshman pitcher against a very strong Warriors batting line-up.

Knights Split Doubleheader with #9 Ranked UCAP 3-2 and 2-1 to run record to 17-11!

The CCRI Knights baseball team split their doubleheader with the #9 ranked (NJCAA Poll 4/16/08) Pointers of UConn-Avery Point in two very closely contested games the Knights lost the first one 3-2 but rallied to win the second 2-1. With the doubleheader split the Knights record is now 17-11 on the season and 7-4 in Region XXI play.

Game one: CCRI-2 UCAP-3

On the mound for the Knights Bobby Swann (Cumberland, RI) pitched very well throwing 5-1/3 innings allowing just one run on four hits walking three and striking out four Pointer batters. At the plate for the Knights Co-Captain Luis Chacon (West Warwick, RI) went 2-4 with an RBI followed by Stefan Wagner (Fremont, NH) who was 1-3 with a double and an RBI. This was a great game for the Knights though they came up on the short end of the stick. Holding the very potent UCAP line-up to just three runs was very good the Knights just couldn’t put together enough offense to complement the pitching performance.

Game two: CCRI-2 UCAP-1

Warren Sternberg (North Kingstown, RI) delivered another spectacular outing for the Knights throwing seven tremendous innings allowing just one run on three hits walking none and striking out three Pointer batters to improve his record to 4-3 on the season. Sternberg was on his “A” game today keeping the Pointer batters off balance all day commanding both sides of the plate and not allowing them to put anything together which is just what the Knights batters needed up against some tough pitching themselves.

At the plate for the Knights they were led by Luke Abraham (Cumberland, RI) who went 1-2 with an RBI. Also helping the cause was Joe Comella (Johnston, RI) who went 1-2 with an RBI and also was the battery-mate for Sternberg guiding him on his spectacular outing. This was a great win for the Knights against the ninth ranked team in the nation.

The Knights are back in action Wednesday the 23rd when they travel to Northern Essex to play at 4:00pm.

Lady Knights Reach 10-0 in Region XXI by Defeating Holyoke 8-0 and 3-0!

The CCRI Lady Knights softball team defeated the Cougars of Holyoke CC in their doubleheader 8-0 and 3-0. With the two victories the Lady Knights improve to 11-4 on the season and a perfect 10-0 in Region XXI play.

The Lady Knights found themselves with a unique set of challenges in this doubleheader which started when Lady Knights’ pitching ace Courtney St. Germain (Lincoln, RI) was warming-up for game one and realized that something wasn’t right. Having pitched in many games on travel teams, in high school and now in college she quickly deduced that the mound was not at the NJCAA 43’ standard but at 40’ which is the high school length. The Holyoke staff was adamant that the mound was “official” but after a measurement that was stepped off by the umpire then later measured by tape, St. Germain’s suspicions were proven right. Three feet may not seem like much, but batter timing along with a pitcher’s pitch location can be severely affected by this discrepancy.

Game one: CCRI-8 Holyoke-0

Courtney St. Germain (Lincoln, RI) registered her fifth straight shutout pitching five spectacular innings allowing just three hits, walking one and striking out three Cougar batters. This performance was even more impressive knowing the conditions with which she had to throw distance wise. With her marvelous performance St. Germain lowered her season ERA to a miniscule 1.08. In Region XXI Courtney is a perfect 5-0 with a 0.00 ERA with opponents only batting 1.80 against her in the region.

At the plate the Lady Knights offense was bolstered by five Cougar errors which they capitalized upon to score runs to back St. Germain’s great outing. Caitlin Montella (Warwick, RI) led the Lady Knights going 2-2 with two RBI and a run scored followed by Co-Captain Jenna Bassett (Warwick, RI) who was 1-3 with a double, three RBI, a run scored and a sacrifice. Also helping the Lady Knights was Daina Lamb (Cranston, RI) going 1-2 with an RBI and a run scored; Alison Balzano (Warwick, RI) was 1-2 with three runs scored and a stolen base, and Co-Captain Lindsay Johnston (Pawtucket, RI) scored three times, walked once had two stolen bases.

Game two: CCRI-3 Holyoke-0

Kristie Frydryk (Palmer, MA) pitched superbly and was helped by some remarkable defense as she threw seven shutout innings allowing four hits and striking out three. This was the second shutout of the year for Frydryk who also elevated her Region XXI record to a perfect 5-0 and lowered her season ERA to 1.78. This performance was even more impressive knowing the conditions with which she had to throw distance wise.

Defensively the Lady Knights were again spectacular though they did commit an error they made key plays including two double plays that halted Holyoke rallies. In the first inning with no score with one out and the bases loaded the Lady Knights turned the first one on a ball hit to Co-Captain Jenna Bassett at third she threw home to Daina Lamb who fired to first baseman Caitlin Montella to end the inning. The second was in the fifth inning with the score 3-0 CCRI and one out on a ball hit to Co-Captain Lindsay Johnston with a runner on second base who threw to Montella to get one out and Montella fired to Bassett to cut down the runner trying to advance to third. Both plays were critical in securing the shutout and keeping the Lady Knights ahead.

At the plate for the Lady Knights Co-captain Jenna Bassett (Warwick, RI) led the way going 2-2 with an RBI a run scored and a sacrifice followed by Alyssa Gering (West Warwick, RI) who was 1-2 with a double and an RBI. Also helping the Lady Knights was pitcher Kristie Frydryk who added a hit a stolen base and an RBI, Daina Lamb (Cranston, RI) had a hit, a run scored and was hit by a pitch, Co-Captain Lindsay Johnston (Pawtucket, RI) had a double and Co-Captain Julie Paradis (Lincoln, RI) a run scored.

Head Coach Bev Wiley commented after the game “The team played well under adverse conditions and defense shone through again making key plays when we needed them.”

The Lady Knights are back in action Monday the 21st when they travel to Massasoit CC for a doubleheader starting at 3:00pm.

Knights Nab Second Straight Region XXI Tennis Crown defeating Holyoke 5-4!

For the ninth time this season the Knights took to the courts without a full team. Once again CCRI defaulted two of the possible nine points right from the start. CCRI managed to prevail overall 5-4, clinching the victory, and with it, the Region XXI Championship for the second consecutive year.

After taking three out of five singles positions (sixth was a default), the Knights needed both of the doubles matches (third doubles was also a pre-match default) if they were to win the day. With the match result and the Region Championship in the balance, doubles was played in the best two-out-of-three sets format. The Knights, with Dan and Joe DeLuca (Warwick, RI) in first doubles and Nate York (Greenville, RI) and Chris Izzo (Warwick, RI) in second, took to the courts on a beautiful afternoon. In second doubles, Izzo/York jumped out to a relatively easy 6-1 first set win and held on to close the second set out 6-4, setting up first doubles as the deciding match of the day. In first doubles, HCC’s Stefan Stauber and George Alvarez grabbed an early break and held on to it up to 4-3. The DeLucas broke the normally steady serving Alvarez at 4-3 to even the match at 4-4. HCC then broke back to grab back the lead. Stauber, serving at 5-4 for the set, seemed to tense up a little, and the DeLucas took full advantage, breaking Stauber at love. Both teams held their next two service games to set up a first-set tie-break. HCC grabbed the first point of CCRI’s serve (a mini-break as it is known in a tie-break) but the Knights got it right back, and more as they prevailed 7-2 in the tie-break. In the second set the DeLucas used that momentum to roll through the set, 6-2, securing the fifth point. The victory propelled the Knights to the 5-4 overall victory.

The quote of the day came from HCC’s George Alvarez, their first singles player, a very good player. Following the fifth singles match he said “(Sam) Jones (New London, CT) has made quite a transformation since the first match!” Jones, who had never really played tennis before three weeks ago, took Xavier Garcia of HCC took the brink in his fifth doubles match before finally succumbing 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). Jones was down 3-0 in both sets and was actually down 5-1 in the second set before winning four-straight games and five out of six to set up the tie-break! Jones, who measures 6'5" and weighs 280lbs and looks more like a linebacker than a tennis player, was all over the court, never giving up on any shot, at one point he chased a short shot so aggressively that he couldn’t stop himself and went right through the net…bringing it down off the posts. The match had to be temporarily stopped until HCC head Coach Linda Scott could re-setup the net! Three weeks ago Jones won one game, this week he nearly won a set and could have easily carried that momentum, had he won it, to carry the match. From a guy who just pounded the ball with little concern of where it went three weeks ago, Jones was actually constructing points on the court, trying intentionally to hit it to the opponents weaker side, in Sam’s words “what do you call that side, his backside?!” Sort of Sam, technically it is called his backhand side!

Overall scores: CCRI wins 5-4 over Holyoke Community College – securing a second straight, and 14th overall, Region XXI (NE) title – 1S George Alvarez (HCC) def Nathan York (Smithfield, RI) 7-5, 6-1; 2S Daniel DeLuca (Warwick, RI) def Stefan Stauber (HCC) 6-4, 4-6, 6-3; 3S Joseph DeLuca (Warwick, RI) def Matt Sanders (HCC) 6-1, 6-3; 4S Christopher Izzo (Warwick, RI) def Adrian Castaneda (HCC) 5-7, 6-0, 6-0; 5S Xavier Garcia (HCC) def Samuel Jones (New London, CT) 6-3, 7-6 (7-4); 6S CCRI defaults; 1D DeLuca/DeLuca (CCRI) def Alvarez/Stauber (HCC) 7-6 (7-2), 6-2; 2D York/Izzo (CCRI) def Castaneda/Sanders 6-1, 6-4; 3D CCRI defaults.

Head Coach John Panzica said after the matches “Winning today’s match clinched CCRI’s second consecutive Region XXI championships. With the victory, Men’s tennis clinched a berth in the National Tournament to be held May 11-15 in Plano, TX. The guys really came together and performed today. This team has been through a lot, entering each match under-manned and having to battle for every position. We are very proud of these guys and we look forward to what they can do at the National Tournament. We think this team, even with just five players, really has a chance to earn some points at the Nationals.”

The Knights now look forward to the National Championships at Collin CC in Plano, TX May 11th through the 16th.

St. Germain throws No-hitter as Lady Knights defeat Dean 10-0 and 10-2 to improve to 8-0 in Region XXI!

The CCRI Lady Knights softball team defeated the Region XXI rival Bulldogs of Dean College in their doubleheader 10-0 and 10-2. With the doubleheader sweep the Lady Knights improve their season record to 9-4 and a perfect 8-0 in Region XXI play.

Game one: CCRI-10 Dean-0

Courtney St. Germain (Lincoln, RI) threw her first collegiate no-hitter in the game one defeat of Dean College. St. Germain has been flat out dominant since beginning Region XXI play, throwing four straight shutouts and has yet to yield a run to a Region XXI team highlighted by yesterday’s no-hit bid. In addition, Courtney has lowered her ERA to just 1.21on the season and 0.00 in Region XXI play. In yesterday’s game St. Germain threw five terrific innings allowing no hits though she walked four Bulldog batters she was able to make up for that by striking out six of them. Courtney was truly impressive because even with the batters she walked her pitches were right around the plate and some of them could have been called strikes but rather than lose her composure she re-focused and was able to meet the stingy strike zone of the umpire. This was another in what is becoming a long line of dominating performances by the Lady Knights’ ace pitcher.

At the Plate for the Lady Knights Co-Captain Julie Paradis (Lincoln, RI) was 2-2 with a double two RBI and two runs scored followed by Daina Lamb (Cranston, RI) who was 2-2 with a double two RBI and a run scored. Also having a big game at the plate was Alyssa Raymond (Warwick, RI) who was 2-3 with two RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base, Courtney St. Germain helped herself by going 2-2 with two RBI and a run scored. In addition, Co-Captain Lindsay Johnston (Pawtucket, RI) had a hit and two RBI, Ashley Mangione (Warwick, RI) contributed a hit, a stolen base, a run scored and a sacrifice, and Co-Captain Jenna Bassett (Warwick, RI) added a hit and a run scored.

Game two CCRI-10 Dean-2

Kristie Frydryk (Palmer, MA) had another impressive outing on the mound for the Lady Knights holding the Bulldogs to two runs, only one of them earned, over five innings on six hits walking one and striking out four Bulldog batters. Frydryk has done an excellent job herself on the mound this year for the Lady Knights since starting Region XXI play she is a perfect 4-0 allowing just three earned runs in those four games and lowering her season ERA to just 2.12.

At the plate for the Lady Knights the first six batters in the order had two hits each led by Co-Captain Lindsay Johnston (Pawtucket, RI) who went 2-3 with a double, three RBI and two run scored followed by Caitlin Montella (Warwick, RI) who was 2-2 with a triple, two RBI and a sacrifice and Co-captain Jenna Bassett (Warwick, RI) was 2-2 with three run scored. Also having a very good game at the plate was Daina Lamb (Cranston, RI) who was 2-2 with two RBI and two runs scored, Alison Balzano (Warwick, RI) who was 2-3 with a triple and a run scored, and Julie Paradis (Lincoln, RI) was 2-4 with two runs scored.

Head Coach Bev Wiley commented after the games “Again, we played very well as a team and everyone contributed to our victories. We are swinging the bats well right now, and our defense and pitching have been excellent. I was really happy for Courtney for her first collegiate no-hitter and Kristie also pitched very well. It is a luxury to have pitchers that we can run out there to give us great performances whether we have big leads or are in tight games. We are playing very well right now we just need to keep improving on the little things everyday so we can be playing at our best as we move into the Region XXI Tournament.”

The Lady Knights are back in action this Saturday the 19th when they travel to play at Region XXI foe Holyoke CC for a doubleheader starting at 1:00pm.

Knights’ Golfers Shoot 326 to Defeat Dean’s 368 but not Holyoke’s 324 to Start Season 1-1!

The CCRI Knights golf team had their first match at Cranston Country Club. On the par 71 course the knights shot a 326 which was enough to defeat Dean College who shot 368 but just short of defeating Holyoke who shot a 324. With the three team match split the Knights start the season 1-1.

Individually for the Knights: James Bonas (Newport, RI) shot a 77, Andrew Bernardo (Warwick, RI) shot a 79, David Di Censo (Cranston, RI) shot a 84, Matt Conway (Warwick, RI) shot a 86 and George Gingell (Warwick, RI) shot a 92. Greg Strattner from Holyoke led all scorers with a match low 76 followed by The Knights Bonas at 77 and Bernardo at 79.

Knights’ Bats Fall Flat versus Bulldogs as they Lose 5-2

The CCRI Knights baseball team lost to Region XXI rival Bulldogs of Dean College 5-2. With the loss the Knights record drops to 16-10 on the season and 6-3 in Region XXI play.

CCRI-2 Dean-5

The Knights couldn’t get anything going offensively yesterday versus the Bulldogs and the Knights’ pitchers had a tough time finding the strike zone early in the game as a result they came up on the short end of the stick in the Region XXI battle.

At the plate for the Knights Co-Captain Luis Chacon (West Warwick, RI) was 2-5 with an RBI, followed by Kyle Borden (Lincoln, RI) who was 1-4 with a double and an RBI and Nick Simon (Pawtucket, RI) was 1-4 with a double. The Knights got a few hits but could not string together any extended rallies to overcome the Bulldogs.

On the mound for the Knights Victor Baez (Providence, RI) struggled with his command as he lasted just 2-2/3 innings allowing two runs on just one hit, walking four and striking out one and taking the loss dropping his record to 3-2 on the season. Collin McMaster (Elma, WA) relieved Baez and threw 3-2/3 innings allowing three runs, two earned, on three hits walking two and striking out three. David Maher (Richmond, RI) relieved McMaster and threw 1-1/3 innings of no hit ball striking out two and was followed by Bobby Swann (Cumberland, RI) who threw a perfect inning striking out one. Early control problems for the Knights pitchers spelled doom for them as they could not put together enough hits to overcome the early deficit losing by a final of 5-2.

The Knights are back in action on Friday the 18th when they host Roxbury CC at 4:00pm at Fell field located on the CCRI Knight Campus in Warwick.

Lady Knights Handle Holyoke CC 25-0 and 3-0 to Improve to 7-4 the season and 6-0 in Region XXI!

The CCRI Lady Knights softball team defeated the Cougars of Holyoke CC in their doubleheader 25-0 in the first game and 3-0 in the second game. With the two victories the Lady Knights improve their record to 7-4 on the season and 6-0 in Region XXI play.

CCRI-25 Holyoke-0

The CCRI Lady Knights’ bats were on fire in the first game as every Lady knights batter registered a base hit and they batted around the order in both the first and second innings as they put up 13 runs in the first and eight runs in the second and from there coasted behind their pitching ace Courtney St. Germain (Lincoln, RI) who charted her third shutout in a row.

On the mound for the Lady Knights Courtney St. Germain threw a five inning two-hit shutout her third in a row striking out three Cougar batters and lowering her ERA to a microscopic 1.39 in the process. In throwing her third shutout St. Germain ties the CCRI school record for shutouts in a season with at least four starts left this season. If Courtney continues at this pace she will also crush the single-season ERA record of 1.51 set by Jen Dupont in 2005.

At the plate for the Lady Knights every batter charted a hit led by Co-Captain Lindsay Johnston (Pawtucket, RI) who was 3-4 with a homerun, a double, six RBI and three runs scored followed by Caitlin Montella (Warwick, RI) who went a perfect 4-4 with two doubles, four RBI and three runs scored, and Co-Captain Julie Paradis (Lincoln, RI) went 3-4 with two doubles, four RBI and three runs scored. Also having a big day at the plate was Co-Captain Jenna Bassett (Warwick, RI) who went 3-3 with three runs scored, two RBI, and a stolen base, Daina Lamb (Cranston, RI) was 3-4 with a double, three RBI and a run scored, and Alison Balzano (Warwick, RI) was 2-4 with a double, four runs scored, two RBI and was hit by a pitch. In addition, Ashley Mangione (Warwick, RI) was 2-3 including a double and RBI and a run scored, Courtney St Germain helped her own cause going 2-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, and Alyssa Raymond (Warwick, RI) added a hit, two RBI and two runs scored.

Overall a dominating victory by the Lady Knights who were clicking on all cylinders both offensively, on the mound and defensively in the mercy rule shortened five inning affair.

Game two CCRI-3 Holyoke-0

With as much of a blowout as the first game was the second game took on a whole different complexion with the Lady Knights winning by the narrow 3-0 margin. Luckily Lady Knights’ pitcher Kristie Frydryk (Palmer, MA) was able to chart her first shutout of the year to help them secure the victory.

On the mound for the Lady Knights Kristie Frydryk was impressive in registering her first shutout even with the first batter of the game stroking a double over the head of the speedy Angela Kue (Providence, RI), Frydryk maintained her composure and got out of the first inning jam. Kristie allowed the Cougars to scatter six hits and struck out two and was never in any imminent danger as the Lady Knights defense was again superb and Frydryk kept the Cougar batters off balance for most of the game. With her first shutout Kristie lowers her ERA to just 2.23.

At the plate for the Lady Knights Co-Captain Julie Paradis (Lincoln, RI) led the way going 2-4 with two runs scored followed by Co-Captain Lindsay Johnston (Pawtucket, RI) was 1-2 with a double and two RBI, and Kristie Frydryk helped her own cause adding a hit and a run scored. Also contributing for the Lady Knights were Alison Balzano (Warwick, RI) who was 1-1 with two sacrifices, Caitlin Montella (Warwick, RI), Ashley Mangione (Warwick, RI) and Daina Lamb (Cranston, RI) each also added a hit to the Lady Knights’ attack.

The Lady Knights again showed they can win with an offensive deluge or in a tightly contested defensive battle. It also helps that they have two excellent pitchers and immaculate defense.

The Lady Knights are back in action on Thursday when they host Region XXI rival Dean College for a doubleheader starting at 3:00pm at Winslow Park in Warwick.

Sternberg Throws Complete Game Four-hit Shutout in Knights Victory over Manchester!

The CCRI Knights baseball team defeated Region XXI adversary Cougars of Manchester CC 4-0. With the victory the Knights improve their record to 16-9 and 6-2 in Region XXI.

CCRI-4 Manchester CC-0

The Knights had lost to Manchester 8-2 in Manchester last week so they had revenge on their mind on their home field and they took full advantage of their familiar surroundings to deliver a 4-0 victory.

Knights’ pitcher Warren Sternberg (North Kingstown, RI) was “lights out” as he threw a nine inning four-hit shutout while striking out six Cougar batters. With his impressive outing Sternberg improved his record to 3-3 and lowered his ERA to a staff-leading 2.70. Sternberg was full of courage and showed tremendous resolve as he had full command of all his pitches and kept the batters off balance all day and never gave the Cougars a chance to get anything going.

At the plate for the Knights Greg Joseph (North Kingstown, RI) led the way going 1-3 with a triple an RBI and a run scored followed by Co-Captain George Tager (North Kingstown, RI) who was 1-3 with a run scored and an RBI raising his batting average to .431, Also delivering at the plate for the Knights was Luke Abraham (Cumberland, RI) who went 1-4 with a double and a run scored raising his batting average to .424, Nick Simon (Pawtucket, RI) went 1-3 raising his average to .346, and co-captain Luis Chacon (West Warwick, RI) went 1-3 with a run scored raising his average to .325. Though there were not an abundance of hits for the Knights they came in key situations and they capitalized on their scoring opportunities. However, the story of the day was the phenomenal outing by Warren Sternberg.

Coach Joe Vigeant commented after the game “Sternberg was lights out! He delivered a gutsy and determined effort and had command of all his pitches today. This was an awesome performance by Warren!”

The Knights are back in action Wednesday the 16th when they host Region XXI rival Dean College at 4:00pm at Fell field on the CCRI Knight Campus in Warwick.

Short-handed Knights Hold off Region XXI Rival Holyoke CC to win Match 5-4!

As much as things change for the CCRI Knights men’s tennis team, they stay the same. For the eighth time this season the Knights took to the courts without a full team. They were going to finally have a full compliment of six players for our Friday’s match all the way up until late Thursday afternoon when one of their newer players decided to leave the team. So once again CCRI defaulted two of the possible nine points, right from the start.

Nate York (Smithfield, RI) lost his singles match this time around, but managed, once again, to drag it out three long sets! This week York jumped out to an easy first set win, but then dropped the second set 6-0 and battled in the third, finally succumbing 6-2 in a set that was considerably closer than the score indicates. The best news of the day, though, is that the Knights managed to prevail 5-4, setting up next Friday’s rubber match which will determine the Region XXI championship.

After taking three out of five singles positions (sixth was a default), the Knights needed both of the doubles matches (the third doubles was also a pre-match default) if they were to win the day. Because the match result was in the balance, and due to the time available because the matches were inside and started early as a result of the rain outside, both coaches decided to scrap the typical eight game pro-set in favor of a two-out-of-three set, more traditional, format. The Knights, with the DeLuca brothers Joe and Dan (Warwick, RI) in number one and Nate York (Greenville, RI) and Chris Izzo (Warwick, RI) in number two, both jumped out to relatively easy first set wins. HCC battled back in both second sets. In number one doubles, the HCC team and the team of Joe and Dan DeLuca remained on serve all the way to 5-5 in the second. With HCC’s 6'4", big serving Stefan Stauber serving, the DeLucas broke his service, and Joe DeLuca went on to hold his serve to prevail 7-5. In number two doubles, HCC’s Matt Sanders and Adrian Castaneda jumped out with two early breaks to a 3-0 lead. York and Izzo broke back in the fourth game and held the fifth to bring the match score to 3-2. Sanders and Castaneda kept pace for the next four games and Castaneda was serving for the set at 5-4. York and Izzo broke Castaneda to level the match at 5-5. Izzo, serving well inside, held at love to put the pressure squarely on Sanders. Sanders, serving at 5-6 to stay in the set and force a tie break, served well, but some timely angled shots and great defense allowed York and Izzo to break Sanders for the match! That victory propelled CCRI to the overall 5-4 victory.

The crowd favorite, on both sides, was the Knight’s Sam Jones (New London, CT). Jones, a football player, turned basketball player, turned tennis player is just starting out and had one of the most entertaining matches at number five singles. Sam calls his first serve his “Serena (Williams) serve”. Unfortunately, his isn’t quite as consistent as the real Williams’, but when it goes in it is quite impressive! Sam never gives up on the court and, although he has only been playing for about three weeks now, Jones has shown impressive improvement. Following last week’s 6-1, 6-0 defeat, where Jones won the first game and then lost 12-straight, this week he managed a few more games, losing 6-4 and 6-3. Sam delivers great shots every now and then, some of which are better than he even realizes.

Final scores: CCRI wins 5-4 over Holyoke Community College – 1S George Alvarez (HCC) def Nathan York (Smithfield, RI) 2-6, 6-0, 6-2; 2S Dan DeLuca (Warwick, RI) def Stefan Stauber (HCC) 6-2, 6-2; 3S Joe DeLuca (Warwick, RI) def Matt Sanders (HCC) 6-0, 6-1; 4S Chris Izzo (Warwick, RI) def Adrian Castaneda (HCC) 6-4, 6-3; 5S Xavier Garcia (HCC) def Sam Jones (New London, CT) 6-4, 6-3; 6S CCRI defaults; 1D DeLuca/DeLuca (CCRI) def Alvarez/Stauber (HCC) 6-3, 7-5; 2D York/Izzo (CCRI) def Castaneda/Sanders 6-2, 7-5; 3D CCRI defaults. The match was played 4/11/2008 at the Lincoln CCRI field house.

Head Coach John Panzica commented after the match: “Winning today’s match sets up next Friday’s match at Holyoke as the deciding match in the season series as well as the Region XXI Championships. Both teams will be hungry for the win. This is just the next chapter in the long rivalry between our two programs which has seen CCRI turn the tide last year after at least three consecutive years of Holyoke dominance.”

The Knights are back in action next Friday the 18th when they will host Holyoke at the Toll Gate High School tennis courts in Warwick.

Lady Knights Battle past Bulldogs 7-0 and 4-1 to improve to 4-0 in Region XXI!

The CCRI Knights softball team defeated the Bulldogs of Dean College 7-0 and 4-1 in a doubleheader in Franklin, MA. With the victory the Lady Knights improve their overall record to 5-4 on the season and 4-0 in Region XXI play.

After dominating Region XXI foe Massasoit CC on Tuesday The Lady Knights found themselves in a “dog fight” during their doubleheader with the Bulldogs of Dean College. In the first game they got a comfortable lead with a six run second inning and were able to keep the Bulldogs bats at bay winning by a final of 7-0. In the second game the Lady Knights were not able to rely on their tremendous offensive power and had to rely on the short game and tremendous defense to battle back from a 1-0 deficit to win by the final of 4-1.

Game one: CCRI-7 Dean-0

On the mound for the Lady Knights Courtney St. Germain (Lincoln, RI) was spectacular throwing seven shutout innings allowing just two hits and walking two while striking out a season-high seven Bulldog batters. Game two: CCRI-4 Dean-1

The second game of the doubleheader had a much different feel than the first with the Bulldogs jumping on the scoreboard with a run in the first. The Lady Knights battled back to tie the score in the third inning and went ahead with a three run fourth utilizing small ball executing bunts and sacrificing runners into scoring position they were able to secure the hard fought 4-1 victory.

On the mound for the Lady Knights Kristie Frydryk (Palmer, MA) delivered another stellar outing throwing seven strong innings allowing just one run on six hits walking one and striking out three. With the victory Frydryk raised her season record to 2-2 and lowered her ERA to an impressive 2.88.

After the doubleheader Coach Head Coach Bev Wiley commented: “Our defense really shone through today in both games. Lindsay Johnston leaped and made a great snag of a line drive. Caitlin Montella had two great plays at first snagging a line drive and a couple of screaming ground balls hit her way. Everyone, and I mean everyone, contributed to our wins today either with a hit, strong defense, a sacrifice bunt, and great pitching. Courtney pitched another shutout dominating on the mound allowing only two hits. In the second game, Kristie also pitched very well, and our defense was unbelievable. Angela Kue made two run-saving catches in left field, utilizing her great speed. One ball had extra bases written all over it, but she galloped back and made the catch look easy. Another play looked like it would drop in for a base hit and she ran it down and made a great shoe-top catch. Both times runners were in scoring position and her catches ended their rally. We were extremely proud of the total team effort today.”

Hot bats and great pitching has been a key to the Lady Knights success since returning from their Florida Trip. Daina Lamb leads the Lady Knights with a .565 average with 13 hits including three doubles followed by Co-Captain Lindsay Johnston is batting .485 and leading the Lady Knights 14 hits, 14 runs scored and 10 RBI, and extra base hits with seven including four triples and three doubles. Lady Knights Freshman Taylor Simmons Earns NJCAA Third Team All-American

Freshmen Taylor Simmons (Norwalk, CT) is a 5’8 shooting guard that was brought in by Head Coach Marcus Reilly and his staff to be a primary option in their offensive. Simmons did not disappoint the coaching staff or her teammates. Unlike most freshmen who need time to develop and expand their game Simmons came out on fire scoring 15 points or more in four of her first seven games.

Her coming of age, however, happened on December 12 versus national power Harcum College. Having beaten the Bears twice already the Lady Knights and Simmons knew it would not be easy beating a team for the third time. In a half that saw the Lady Knights struggling offensively Simmons came off the bench and sparked the Knights scoring 12 of the Lady Knights 23 points. Taylor started the second half and continued her hot shooting, scoring the first two baskets of the second half to give the Lady Knights their first lead. Simmons finished the game with a career-high 25 points with four rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots in a Lady Knights 59-49 victory.

It only took Simmons six more games to exceed 25 points as her career high. On January 21st the Lady Knights hosted Monroe College the number one ranked NJCAA III team and the 2007-08 NJCAA Division III National Champions. Simmons was the best player on the floor that day as she had a game and career high 28 points on 10-17 shooting including a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe. The Lady Knights behind Simmons cruised to an 88-73 win and started a streak of seven straight wins.

The bigger the game the better Simmons played. This was evident every time the Lady Knights played a ranked opponent. Versus nine ranked teams in the regular season Simmons scoring average went up from 11.6 points per game to 17.4 points per game. In the Lady Knights first two rounds of playoffs Simmons was consistent scoring in double figures in both games. In the Regional Final versus Orange County CC Simmons scored 17 points and in the Lady Knights Northeast District final she scored 14 points to help lead the Lady Knights to their fifth straight national tournament.

Simmons was rewarded for her phenomenal season. On Wednesday April 9th Simmons was named to the NJCAA Third Team All-American. Simmons joins teammates Denise Scott (Yonkers, NY) and Rachel Murray (Gloucester, MA) who have won national honors this season. This is the second year that the Lady Knights have had a freshmen named to the All-American Team.

Denise Scott Named NJCAA First Team All-American for the Third Time!

Sophomore Denise Scott (Yonkers, NY) was named First Team NJCAA All-American. This is the second straight season that Scott has been named First Team All-American. Scott became the first Lady Knight in school history to make back to back First Team honors for the regular season. In addition, she was voted Pre-Season First Team All-American by the NJCAA making her a three- time NJCAA First Team All-American. It doesn’t stop there as Scott also became the first Lady Knight to make NJCAA and WBCA First Team All-Americans in the same season. Scott accomplishments were well deserved this season as she helped lead the Lady Knights to their second most wins in school history with 26. In 31 games this season Scott averaged 14.6 points and five rebounds per game. Scott also broke the school single-season steals record with 91 and set the career steals mark with 174 steals.

Scott knew with 10 incoming freshmen that Head Coach Marcus Reilly would rely heavily upon her for leadership and her ability to take games over at points during the season. Denise responded to her coach as she came out of the gate red-hot scoring in double-figures in her first ten games of the year capped off by her season-high 32 points versus the #10 team in the country Harcum College. This allowed the freshmen to be freshmen and come along slowly during the course of the season.

Denise appeared in 31 games for the Lady Knights and is their leading scorer this season averaging 14.5 points per game. Scott has stepped up numerous times for the Lady Knights during the course of the season. The bigger the game for Denise the better player she becomes which is evident by her stats. In games this season versus ranked opponents or teams that play in NJCAA Division I Denise excelled averaging 19.9 points per game and 3.2 steals per game.

Battling through major foot injuries Denise put her body at risk every night that she stepped onto the court in the second semester. It paid off for her and her teammates as Scott helped lead the Lady Knights to their second best season in school history with a regular season recorded of 23-6 and overall record of 28-7. Scott also became a major part of CCRI tradition as she led the Lady Knights to their fifth straight Region XXI and Northeast District Championship and led them to the “Elite Eight” at the National Tournament for the second year in a row.

Scott finished the season averaging 14.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.9 steals per game. Denise will also leave her mark all time on the CCRI Women’s Basketball Program. She finished her career with 911 points which places her third all time on CCRI’s scoring list. Scott also left her mark defensively. Scott set the single-season record in steals with 91 and career steals with 169.

For a personal accomplishment Denise made the all Region Team for her second straight year. Scott also won the Rhode Island Media Luncheon Award as the best female college basketball player in the state. She was also named to the WBCA 1st Team All American Team. Scott is only the second Lady Knight in school history to win this award. The awards do not stop their for Scott as she was named to the NJCAA 1st Team All-American Team for the second straight season. Scott became the first Lady Knight in school history to make back to back First Team honors for the regular seasons. In addition, she was voted Pre-Season First Team All-American by the NJCAA making her a three- time NJCAA First Team All-American.

Coach Reilly speaks very highly of Scott saying, “Denise has emerged as the player that all opponents must game plan against. Despite drawing double teams and being the focus of scouting reports, she has exceeded or maintained her production in all statistical categories from her First Team All-American year. She has done this while leading us to be ranked 16th nationally and a fifth straight National Tournament and our second straight ‘Elite Eight’.”

Short-handed Knights lose Heartbreaker to Region XXI Rival Holyoke 5-4

The CCRI Knights Men’s Tennis Team lost a heartbreaker to Region XXI nemesis Holyoke CC 5-4. With the loss the Knights’ record falls to 2-5 on the season and 0-1 in Region XXI.

The Knights had to give away points due to ineligible players which cost them dearly as the Knights dropped a heartbreaker to Region XXI rival Holyoke CC. CCRI entered the match with five players, immediately giving away two points (six singles and three doubles). With seven positions in play, the Knights could only afford to lose two in order to have a chance to win the overall match. Those two losses came in singles as the inexperience of the newest members of the CCRI Men’s tennis team came to bear. Following that, a closely fought, but ultimately conceded doubles match in second position proved the deciding match as CCRI lost 8-5 in an eight game preset.

Knights’ freshman Nate York (Smithfield, RI) again thrilled in a three set match against Holyoke CC in a 1st singles contest held at the Lincoln CCRI Field house courts due to the rain outside. York, in what is becoming typical for his time for the Knights, battled three full sets to defeat Holyoke CC #1 George Alvarez 3-6, 6-3, and 6-3. The match was marked by great points, great hustle and gutsy performances on both sides. York was the first match to go out on the court and the last singles match to come off on the day!

The Knights’ Joe DeLuca (Warwick, RI) was up next and really played his heart out against a tough opponent, Stefan Stauber, in singles only to face him again in doubles, pairing with Nate York following his marathon singles match. In singles DeLuca looked strong throughout the two sets despite his opponent gaining confidence and momentum through them. Serving for the second set (and the match) at 5-4, DeLuca was broken after Stauber of Holyoke CC pulled out some of his best shots of the day to save a couple of match points. DeLuca showed true determination, however, breaking back at love and serving again for the match. The final game was not without drama. DeLuca took an early 40-love lead but Stauber battled back to deuce (40-40). The pair shared no less than nine deuces in the final game as Stauber saved four match points and DeLuca saved four break points himself before finally finishing the game, set and mach with a serve to Stauber’s backhand that he just couldn’t get around on, pushing it wide and into the net giving Deluca the hard fought victory. York and DeLuca then paired up for doubles and split eight straight breaks of serve in their 1st Doubles contest before DeLuca reversed the trend, holding serve in the ninth game of the pro-set and carrying that momentum to win three of the next four games with DeLuca closing out the match on a service winner.

Here are all the final scores: 1st singles Nate York CCRI def George Alvarez HCC 3-6, 6-3, 6-3; 2nd singles Joe DeLuca CCRI def Stefan Stauber HCC 6-2, 7-5; 3rd singles Christopher Izzo (Warwick, RI) CCRI def Matt Sanders HCC 6-3, 3-6, 6-4; 4th singles Adrian Castonella HCC def Sam Jones (New London, CT) CCRI 6-1, 6-0; 5S Xavier Garcia HCC def Jason Collier (Killingly, CT) CCRI 6-3, 6-2; 6th singles CCRI defaults; 1st doubles York/DeLuca CCRI def Alvarez/Stauber HCC 8-5; 2nd doubles Castonella/Garcia HCC def Izzo/Jones CCRI 8-5; 3rd doubles CCRI defaults. Final score: Holyoke CC 5- CCRI 4.

Head Coach John Panzica commented after the match: “Today was a great effort, particularly from newcomers Sam Jones and Jason Collier. Despite their losses their efforts were tremendous and I look forward to everyone improving over the course of the remaining matches in this season against Holyoke, CC.” He further noted: “Holyoke gave a strong showing, coming to the match with eight players. It was a nice match on both sides and we look forward to our matches over the next two weeks which will decide the Region XXI representative at the National Tournament in May.”

The Knights are back in action next Friday when they travel to Holyoke CC to attempt to avenge this week’s loss 4:00pm at Holyoke CC.
