Lady Knights Demolish Dean 11-0 to improve record 5-2

The CCRI Lady Knights women’s soccer team demolished Regions XXI rival Lady Bulldogs of Dean College 11-0.  With the win the Lady Knights improve their record to 5-2 on the season.

The Lady Knights were not playing crisply as the first half started but were able to get on track when Cassie Cooney (Central Falls, RI) scored the first goal assisted by Liz Sutton (Warwick, RI) at the 30:25 of the first half.  CCRI kept the momentum going as at the 25:20 mark Stephanie Grassini (Warwick, RI) scored the Lady Knights second goal assisted by Vanitda Thongsithavong (Providence, RI), that duo hooked up again at the 8:48 mark of the first half when Thongsithavong passed it to Grassini on the right wing and Grassini powered past the Dean defenders and squeezed a shot between the Goalkeeper and the post making the score 3-0 where the score rested at halftime.  In the second half The Lady Knights opened the flood gates with an eight goal barrage. Jill DeLuca (West Warwick, RI) started the scoring at the 44:01 mark assisted by Katie Finn (Warwick, RI), followed by Liz Sutton (Warwick, RI) from Finn at the 38:39 mark making the score 5-0 and the rout was on.  Goalkeeper Jenna Bassett (Warwick, RI) charted her second shutout of her collegiate career.

Co-Captain April Oberhelman (Woonsocket, RI) led the way for CCRI with 15 kills along with Kimiyo Garcia (East Providence, RI) who had 13 kills and seven aces.  Also contributing for the Lady Knights were Jasmine Bonanca (Swansea, MA) who had 24 digs and Jennifer Humphrey (Warwick, RI) who added 14 kills.

Knights fall short against Massasoit CC 1-0 record now 2-3-2

The CCRI Knights men’s soccer team lost a tough game to Region XXI foe Massasoit CC 1-0.  With the loss the Knights record falls to 2-3-2 on the season.

This was a very important match for the Knights who must now defeat Dean College on October 4th to still have a chance at the second spot in the Region XXI Tournament.

The Knights and Warriors battled to a 0-0 tie in the first half. The deciding goal happened with 15 minutes to go in the 2nd half as both teams had battled with no goals in two games for a total of 185 minutes.  The Knights created some good opportunities in the final minutes, including a shot from Mike Conceicao (Cranston, RI) that hit the cross bar. The game was very even with the win going to the team that capitalized on one of many good opportunities.  The Knights got off to a slow start but got better as the game went on.

The Knights look forward to get back on the winning track and possibly play injury free for the first time this season, when they travel to Maryland this weekend to play Harford on Saturday at 1:00pm and CCBC-Catonsville Sunday at 1:00pm.

CCRI Women’s Soccer Team defeats NH Tech 6-0 Overall Record improves to 4-2

After a tough 1-0 loss to defending National Champion, Monroe CC on Saturday, the 8th ranked in Division I by the NJCAA Lady Knights rebounded with a decisive 6-0 win over New Hampshire Technical Community College yesterday in Lincoln.  With the win the Lady Knights improve their record to 4-2 on the season.  Led by sophomore Cassie Cooney’s (Central Falls, RI) three goal "hat trick" performance, the Lady Knights dominated the NH Tech Capitals throughout the match from start to finish.

Freshman, Suany Almonte (Warwick, RI) opened the scoring quickly in the fifth minute of play on a beautiful centering cross from midfielder Jill DeLuca (West Warwick).  Ten minutes later, DeLuca then set up Cooney with her second assist for Cooney’s first of three goals on the afternoon.  A short time later Cooney was again set up for another score on an assist by Liz Sutton (Warwick, RI).  The Knights had a commanding 3-0 halftime lead.

The second half was no different as the Lady Knights again came out flying.  Goals by Co-Captain Katie Finn (Warwick), another by Cooney; her third of the day, and a goal by freshman Jackie Babineau (Webster, MA) capped off the scoring.  Freshman Vanitda Thongsithavong (Providence) added an assist and Co-Captain Sharon Barbosa (Fall River, MA) tallied two assists on the day.  Sophomore goalkeeper Amber Cerreto (Hope, RI) who had a great game on Saturday against Monroe, once again looked sharp as she recorded her first shutout victory of the season.

The CCRI Lady Knights Volleyball team was in full command of the Cobleskill Tournament  as they defeated Monroe CC 30-24 and 30-24, Hudson Valley CC 30-11 and 30-12, Mohawk Valley 30-17 and 30-16, then went on to defeat SUNY-Delhi 30-13 and 30-14 in the Semi-finals and Monroe CC in the finals 30-18 and 30-22.  With the victories the Lady Knights improve their record to 17-2 on the season.

The Lady Knights got off to a slow start in their first match versus Monroe CC.  After that first match Head Coach Ray DeAngelis expressed his displeasure because he knew they should be playing much better. The Lady Knights responded by emphatically beating Hudson Valley CC 30-11 and 30-12 and rolled on from there.

Lady Knights Co-Captain and Tournament MVP April Oberhelman (Woonsocket, RI) put the rest of the Lady Knights on her shoulders with an outstanding tournament including 44 kills, 28 digs, nine aces, and six blocks.  Freshman Setter Ashley Markley (Preston, CT) also had and outstanding tournament with an amazing 96 assists, 19 digs, 11 blocks, nine aces and nine kills which earned her All-Tournament honors.  Also contributing for the Knights were Jasmine Bonanca (Swansea, MA) with 71 digs and Kimiyo Garcia (East Providence, RI) added 39 blocks and 25 kills.

#8 Lady Knights Tripped-up by #3 Tribunes fall 1-0 record drops to 3-2

The #8 ranked CCRI Lady Knights soccer team fell to the Defending National Champions and #3 ranked Lady Tribunes 1-0.  With the loss the Lady Knights record falls to 3-2 on the season.

The Lady Knights were matched against a very skilled, disciplined and undefeated Monroe CC team.  However, the Lady Knights were not going to back down to anybody.  The Lady Knights battled hard in the first half but Monroe jumped to a 1-0 lead on a goal from Kerrie Brown on asset play off a corner kick from Deanna DiNardo that slipped past CCRI Goalkeeper Amber Cerreto (Hope, RI). However, that was the last shot that got by Cerreto as she played a spectacular game charting 10 saves, many of them at point blank range.  Monroe kept their lead into the second half but the Lady Knights had a chance to tie the score with about ten minutes left on an indirect kick but it ricocheted off the goalpost preserving the Monroe CC lead as they eventually won 1-0.

The Lady Knights next game will be Monday the 25th at 4:00pm at the CCRI Flanagan Campus in Lincoln

Guenard Leads Knights at Ray Dwyer Meet

The CCRI Knights were represented well at the Ray Dwyer Meet on Saturday.  Though they do not have enough runners to qualify as a team they are still running well.

On the men’s side Ron Guenard (Cumberland, RI) led the Knights finishing 6th in the meet in a time of 32:18 over the 5.6 mile race. Also running a respectable time was Hunter Stewart (Foster, RI) with a time of 35:11 which was good for 46th place.

On the women’s side all three CCRI Cross women runners improved on their personal times again. Rachael Procter (East Providence, RI) placed 44th in a time of 22:08, Kristina Lanctot (Lincoln, RI) placed 50th in a time of 22:34, and Kristin Vanhouwe (North Smithfield, RI) came in 56th in a time of 22:59.  All three CCRI women runners showed excellent progress improving their times to between 1:30 and 2:00 faster than the week before.

Knights fall to Monroe CC 3-0 record falls to 2-2-2 on the season

The CCRI Knights Men’s Soccer Team fell to the Tribunes of Monroe CC 3-0.  With the win the Knights record falls to 2-2-2 on the season.

The Knights had not lost to Monroe in five seasons and this game was billed to be a very close one but once the Tribunes got going the Knights could not answer their attack. The score was 1-0 at the half on a 35 foot goal shot perfectly into the top left corner of the net by Monroe’s Melvin Maduemeizia, there was not much CCRI Goalkeeper Kevin Dos Santos (Cumberland, RI) could do about it. With Monroe scoring their second goal on a bad hop of the ball early in the second half it made it very difficult for the Knights to recover against a tremendously physical Monroe CC team. Monroe set the pace with an outstanding goal and a tricky hop goal which helped contribute to the loss for the Knights.   Though the Knights came up on the short end of the stick they fought very hard to get back into the game but were unable to mount an attack.

The Knights next game will be versus Region XXI foe Massasoit CC this Tuesday the 26th at 3:30pm at the CCRI Flanagan Campus in Lincoln.

In the second half CCRI really kicked it into high gear and scored four more unanswered goals.  Sutton and Jill DeLuca (West Warwick, RI) led the way with two goals each on the day, and Sutton also tallied two assists.  Other Knights goal scorers were Jennie Sandahl (Falkoping, Sweden) and Turcios each scoring their first of the season.  Stephanie Grassini (Warwick) chipped in with two assists and Julie DeLuca (West Warwick), Suany Almonte (Warwick), Jackie Babineau (Webster, MA), and Cooney each recorded an assist.  The Lady Knights maintained possession of the ball and the game as they peppered Massasoit with many shots on goal throughout the entire match.  In the process, freshman Goalkeeper Jenna Bassett (Warwick, RI) earned her first career win in the shutout victory.

Knights handle Holyoke CC 4-1 to improve to 2-1-1 on the season

CCRI  4   Holyoke CC  1

The CCRI Knights men’s soccer team defeated the Cougars of Holyoke CC 4-1.  With the victory the knights improve their record to 2-1-1 on the season.  After a disappointing loss to Dean earlier in the week on a very sloppy field the Knights were able to bounce back emphatically versus Holyoke CC with a 4-1 victory with a tremendous team effort.

Mario Cicade (West Warwick, RI) led the Knights with a goal and an assist, Peter Maciel (East Providence, RI) assisted on two goals.  Also contributing for the Knights were Carlos Duarte (Pawtucket, RI), Travis Fraser (Blackstone, MA) and Ben Tabor (Seekonk, MA) who each had a goal.

The Knights took a 2-0 lead into halftime on an early goal by Duarte and one later in the half by Fraser.  In the second half Holyoke got on the scoreboard to cut the lead to 2-1.  Cicade scored on a header from the cross of Maciel to give the Knights a 3-1 lead from there Tabor put the game away on a feed from Maciel giving the Knights the 4-1 lead by which they would eventually win.

The next game for the Knights will be Tuesday the 19th at a very good Manchester CC team that just beat Massasoit CC 3-2 in OT whom the Knights tied earlier in the season.

Bonanca and Knights dig past Suffolk, Naval Prep and Nassau to improve record to 10-2

The CCRI Knights women’s volleyball team swept Suffolk County CC 30-12 and 30-8, Naval Prep 30-19 and 30-21, and Nassau CC 30-13 and 30-14. With the win the Knights improve their record to 10-2 on the season.

The entire Knights team was energized for the weekend because they all knew that Sophomore Libero (Defensive Specialist) Jasmine Bonanca (Swansea, MA) was just six digs away from setting the All-time CCRI mark of 768 set by Megan Hickey in 2004. (NOTE:  "dig"- passing a spiked or rapidly hit ball or the art of retrieving an attacked ball close to the floor)    During the second game versus Navy Prep the bench was abuzz as they knew that Jazz was just two digs from tying the record and three from setting her own record.  Both teams started off unsettled and it was a few points until Navy started to attack the ball.  The first attack came to Jazz and she dug it easily.  The bench started to buzz you could hear from the bench "Coach, that’s her first dig, right, she had one?"  Then came the second dig and the bench began screaming to the Knights on the court "Two baby! You’re at two." The next attack came from Navy’s right Outside Hitter who was being defended by the Knight’s frontline defenders who blocked the attack at the sideline and deflected the ball towards the middle of the court  Bonanca was initially defending the line and saw the redirection of the attack by the defenders and dove a full body length into the court and "pancaked" (a dig where your hand is flat against the floor so the ball hits the entire hand and not the floor) the ball for as perfect ball to setter Ashley Markley (Preston, CT) who set to the Knight front line for a kill.  Everyone exploded off the Knight bench in applause to congratulate Jasmine on her accomplishment as she smiled ear-to-ear as she received "high fives’ form her teammates.  Bonanca has raised the CCRI All-time digs record to 775 and counting.  Assistant Coach Anne-Marie Balboni said "It was a great day to watch such an incredible athlete break a long standing record."

The Knights next home game will be Tuesday the 19th at 7:00pm versus Holyoke CC at the CCRI Flanagan Campus in Lincoln.

Hunter Stewart (Foster, RI) ran his second fastest 8000m time of 31:29 for a 103rd place finish. The winner of the race was an unattached runner Jason Beausoleil in a time of 26:11.

#11 ranked CCRI Knights ease past Eastern Connecticut 2-1 to improve record to 2-1

CCRI 2    ECONN 1

The #11 ranked CCRI Knights women’s soccer team defeated the Warriors of Eastern Connecticut JV 2-1.  With the victory the Knights improve their record to 2-1 on the season.

Freshman Midfielder Vanitda Thongsithavong (Providence, RI) led the Knights by scoring two goals.  The Knights controlled the tempo of the game and possession of the ball for a greater portion of the game as they took a 1-0 lead in the 7th minute on an unassisted goal by Thongsithavong who scored from a deflected ball off Brittney Tripp the Eastern Connecticut Goalkeeper.  The Knights had many more opportunities in the first half but could not convert them into goals.  In the Second half Thongsithavong was penalized as she charging the net in the 18 meter box giving her a penalty kick in the 48th minute which she took advantage of firing a laser beam shot off the right post ricocheting into the far left corner beating Eastern Connecticut’s Tripp for her second goal of the contest giving the Knights the 2-0 lead.  The Knights kept commanding the tempo of the game until the last two minute when CCRI had most of their reserves in the game Eastern Connecticut’s Cherie St. Germain was able to score on a busted play with 1:20 bringing the Warriors within a goal of the Knights,  but that is as close as they would get.  The Knights ended up winning the game by a final score of 2-1.

Also appearing in the game for Eastern Connecticut was former CCRI three sport student-athlete Bridget Bettencourt (Pawtucket, RI) she played in both halves at forward but did not record any points, but it is always great former CCRI student-athletes continuing their careers at four-year institutions.

The Knights next game will be Tuesday the 19th versus Massasoit CC at 4:00pm at the CCRI Flanagan Campus in Lincoln.

Knights Battle to 0-0 tie in Double O.T. versus Defending Region XXI Champs Massasoit

CCRI  0   Massasoit  0   2OT

The CCRI Knights men’s soccer team battled to a 0-0 tie versus defending Region XXI Champions Massasoit CC.  With the tie the Knights begin the season 0-0-1.

Though there was no scoring there was plenty of action as the Knights had the best chance to score but could not convert their opportunities.  As a matter of fact the Knights just missed, trickling wide of the net, in the opening seconds of the first overtime period.

Sophomore Goalkeeper Kevin Dos Santos (Cumberland, RI) recorded his first shutout of the season, supported by a spectacular defensive effort by the rest of the Knights.  Head Coach Victor Gaspar said "this was a good performance for the Knights against a traditionally tough opponent."

The Knights will play their home opener this Saturday the 9th at 1pm versus Essex CC from Newark, NJ.  The game will be played at the Flanagan Campus in Lincoln.

Lady Knights fall to Catonsville 1-0 but defeat Essex 3-2 to start season 1-1

Sat. September 2, 2006 vs. CCBC Catonsville              Final score:      Catonsville 1  CCRI 0

This was a very even match throughout.  Catonsville scored on a direct kick from approximately 20 yards-out at 21:00 minutes in the first half.  The Lady Knights fought the rest of the way to obtain the tying goal but just could not convert.  In the second half the Knights had Catonsville back on their heels for most of the half while hitting the crossbar twice and the post once.  The Catonsville goalkeeper also stopped two great opportunities in close by Katie Finn (Warwick, RI) on a rebound shot and Stephanie Grassini (Warwick, RI) coming in from off the right side of the goal.  Amber Cerreto (Hope, RI), CCRI’s sophomore goalkeeper played very well as did the rest of the team.

Sun. September 3, 2006  vs. CCBC Essex                    Final Score:     CCRI  3    CCBC Essex  2

The Lady Knights really came out flying in the first half scoring three quick and unanswered first half goals.  The first goal of the season was scored by captain, Katie Finn (Warwick, RI) on a pass from freshmen Stephanie Grassini (Warwick, RI).  Less than two minutes later Grassini scored again, unassisted, with a beautiful shot to the top corner of the goal from approximately 25 yards out from the right side after she stole the ball from the Essex defender.  A short time later Grassini set up Liz Sutton (Warwick, RI) in front for the Lady Knights third goal in the contest.  Amber Cerreto (Hope, RI) didn’t have to make a save as the Lady Knights defense snubbed out every attempted Essex throughout.

In the second half the Knights came out a bit understandably sluggish as some fatigue began to set in from playing two contests in less than 24 hours.  CCBC Essex got on the board in the first five minutes scoring on a direct kick right outside the 18 yard box.  Essex then put on a flurry of shots and freshmen goalkeeper, Jenna Bassett (Warwick, RI) who entered the game for the second half stopped two or three great chances by Essex.  Essex later scored off a corner kick to make the contest even closer at 3-2.  CCRI hung on for their first victory of the season led by the scoring of freshmen Stephanie Grassini (Warwick, RI) and the goalkeeping of freshmen Jenna Bassett (Warwick, RI).
