Ron Guenard Runs away with Cross Country New England District Championship

All of the CCRI Cross Country runners ran extremely well at the New England District Championship.  Though CCRI teams do not have enough runners on each side to compete for team points, did not stop the Knights and Lady Knights runners from finishing in the top thirteen in within their respective sections.  The great finishes were a testament to the runner’s concentration and toughness as they had to deal with some extreme weather conditions including 45 degree temperature, rain and 35mile per hour winds.

Leading the way on the Men’s side was Ron Guenard (Cumberland, RI) who dominated The Championship from start to finish winning by almost one full minute.  Guenard wasted on time taking the lead at 1 and ¼ mile,Ron then finished the 8K course in just 28:23.23 the next closest runner Geoff Wahome of Northern Essex finished in a time of 29:20.16.  On a sloppy day were the course at times were the could have been traversed more easily on water skis then cross country spikes Guenard appear to be running effortlessly. With the victory Guenard becomes The New England District Champion and earns First Team All-District honors. Guenard looks to the National Championship on November 11th were he hopes to earn a top 5 finish against the best the NJCAA Division III has to offer. The Lady Knights started the match on fire as they won decisively 30-15.  In the second game the Lady Knights rested a few starters and were challenged by Holyoke winning by a small 30-25 margin.  In the third game is where it really got exciting, to quote Assistant Coach Anne Marie Balboni ‘I’ve lost a lot of hair, should have gotten a yellow card and my stomach still hurts." With The Lady Knights were again playing a few reserves and others not playing at their normal positions.  Holyoke jumped out to an 8-0 lead they grew that lead to 19-6.  Head Coach Ray DeAngelis did not call a time out or re-insert any more starters.  He relied on sophomores Tina Hilton (Woonsocket, RI), Stephanie Maxwell (Warwick, RI) and Jasmine Bonanca (Swansea, MA) and they stepped up big time to lead a 26-11 run to finish the game and win by a final of 32-30.  Once again another great team effort.

Statistically the Lady Knights were led by the NJCAA Division II player of the week for the week of October 10th Kimiyo Garcia (East Providence, RI) who had 12 kills, 5.5 blocks, three digs and two aces, Tina Hilton (Warwick, RI) with 12 digs, 10 kills, and 2.5 blocks, and Robin Vespia (East Greenwich, RI) with 34 assists, 15 digs, and three kills.  Also contributing for the Lady Knights were Stephanie Maxwell (Warwick, RI) with 16 kills, and five digs, Jen Humphrey (Warwick, RI) with five kills, three blocks and two aces, Jasmine Bonanca (Swansea, MA) with 12 digs, five kills, and four assists, and Jennifer Andreoni (Central Falls, RI) with a team-leading 16 digs for the match.

Guenard Leads Four CCRI Cross Country runners who run personal bests at James Early Meet

The CCRI Men’s and Women’s  Cross Country program keeps raising the bar as four of their runners set personal best times at the James Early Meet this past weekend at Westfield State in Massachusetts.

On the Men’s side Ron Guenard (Cumberland, RI) ran the fastest 8k of his career and the fastest 8K by a CCRI Male since 1997.  With a very strong 6th place finish Guenard’s time of 26:44.55 is not only his best time but also one of the top five times this year in the NJCAA Division III ranks! Not only did Guenard run his best time but also Ronny Genao (Woonsocket, RI) ran his best 8k with a solid 31st place finish and time of 28:04.77. In addition, Hunter Stewart (Foster, RI) also set a personal best in a time of 29:12.46. This was good enough for a 72nd place finish out of a field of 205 male runners.

The CCRI women’s top runner was Rachael Procter (East Providence, RI) who finished in her best time of the season 21:56.06 good for 69th place. Both sides of the CCRI Cross Country Team seem to be picking up steam as the season moves along with their sites on the Districts which they will host and onto the NJCAA Nationals.

The Knights runners’ next meet will be Saturday October 21st at Naval Prep at 9:00am.

#9 ranked Lady Knights post 2-1 win over Holyoke record improves to 6-2 overall

The 9th ranked CCRI Women’s soccer team (ranked 9th in both the NJCAA and the NSCAA national polls) defeated the Cougars of Holyoke CC on Saturday 2-1 in what proved to be a very tough match for the Lady Knights.  The Lady Knights escaped with the 2-1 victory improving their overall record to 6-2.

The Lady Knights were down 1-0 in the first minute of play on a goal from Rachel Colby, Holyoke’s all time leading scorer.  Colby took a shot from outside the 18 yard box that found the top corner of the goal over the outstretched hands of CCRI goalkeeper Jenna Bassett (Warwick, RI). The Lady Knights fought back to tie the score on a goal from Jillian McFall (Warwick, RI), her first of the year with approximately eight minutes left in the half.  McFall was sent in all by herself on a pass from Vanitda Thongsithavong (Providence, RI) and placed the ball nicely into the right hand side of the goal.

Deadlocked at 1-1 in the second half, both teams had their chances to score as the play seemed to go back and forth.  Although the Knights had more chances, they couldn’t find the back of the net. With approximately one minute remaining in the match, the Lady Knights were pressing in Holyoke’s defensive third when Stephanie Grassini (Warwick, RI) found Jill Deluca (West Warwick, RI) on a throw-in.  DeLuca turned and fired a blasting an beautiful shot from outside the 18 yard box that found the top corner of the net on the far side to the right of the Holyoke goalkeeper.  Amber Cerreto (Hope, RI) played the second half in goal for the Knights and made a fantastic breakaway save late in the second half to keep Holyoke at bay.  With less than a minute remaining in the match, Holyoke fought back hard and threatened with a quick flurry as they shot the ball wide and over the net.

The Knights will travel to New Jersey next weekend for two matches against Mercer County Community College on Saturday and County College of Morris on Sunday.

Knights Bow to Bulldogs 2-1 record drops to 4-4-2

The CCRI Knights Men’s Soccer Team played the most important game of the season versus Region XXI rival Dean College and needed a win to have any chance of keeping their post season hopes alive.  With the loss the Knights record falls to 4-4-2 on the season.

This was a very closely contested match. At the half the score was 0-0 as both teams struggled to get a goal.  It is important to note that Dean needed just a tie to get the regional spot, so they were taking no chances. Dean scored first, giving them a 1-0 lead, 12 minutes into the second half.  At the 22nd minute of the second half the Knights tied the game at 1-1, on a cross from Peter Maciel (East Providence, RI) to Paulo Rodrigues (Pawtucket, RI) for a beautiful header into the back of the net.  It was getting down to crunch time with 23 minutes left and the Knights needed to score the winner but unfortunately missed a few excellent opportunities. However, it was Dean that scored to make it 2-1 with 11 minutes to go.  Although the Knights played hard and had some opportunities in the last 11 minutes, it was not enough to score the needed two goals to win.  Kevin Dos Santos (Cumberland, RI) played and excellent game in net making some excellent saves for the Knights.

The Knights next game will be this Saturday when they travel to Holyoke CC at 2:00pm in another Region XXI match

Lady Knights Win Three and Lose Two at Genesee Tourney to improve record to 21-4

The CCRI Lady Knights Volleyball Team traveled to Batavia New York to the Genesee Invitational Tournament for their biggest test of the season so far.  The Lady Knights faired very well but the success came with a price.  The Lady Knights started the Tournament defeating #14 ranked Hagerstown 31-33, 30-28, 15-13, then pummeled CCBC-Catonsville 30-17 and 30-11, before falling to #13 ranked Genesee CC 30-28, 21-30, and 7-15, then defeating #6 ranked in DIII Howard CC 30-24 and 30-22, and finally losing to Division II power Mott CC 20-30 and 20-30.  With the wins and losses the Lady Knights record now stands at 21-4 for the season.

CCRI defeats Hagerstown 31-33, 30-28 and 15-13

The Lady Knights dropped the first game 31-33 helped by an overturned line call by the Referee.  In the second game the Lady Knights again faced adversity as Middle Hitter Jen Humphrey (Warwick, RI) went down with an injury and was replaced by freshman Shondelle Perry (West Warwick, RI) who filled in admirably.   The Lady Knights won a tremendous second game 30-28 on an ace by Jennifer Andreoni (Central Falls, RI).  In the third game Tina Hilton (Woonsocket, RI) helped the Lady Knights overcome a 6-8 deficit to win the third game by a final of 15-13.  The first win for the Lady Knights this year versus a ranked opponent!

#13 ranked Genesee CC Defeats CCRI 28-30, 30-21, and 15-7

The Lady Knights took the first game versus #13 Genesee CC 30-28.  However, the abundance of size and skill of Genesee was too much for the Lady Knights playing short-handed without Humphrey.  The Lady Knights dropped the next two games to Genesee CC 21-30 and 7-15.  It was a great effort by the Lady Knights they just didn’t have enough guns to hold off Genesee CC.

CCRI Defeats #6 ranked (DIII) Howard CC 30-24 and 30-22

The injury bug plagued the Lady Knights again as Co-Captain April Oberhelman (Woonsocket, RI) was injured in the first game.  The injury forced The Lady Knights to shuffle their line-up inserting Robin Vespia (East Greenwich, RI) and moving Libero Jasmine Bonanca (Swansea, MA) to Outside Hitter.  Both moves worked to perfection for the Lady Knights as they were able to handle a very tough and highly ranked Howard CC team 30-24 and 30-22.   Along with Bonanca and Vespia, Kimiyo Garcia (East Providence, RI) had a great match with 10 kills, 10 digs, and five blocks and Jen Andreoni (Central Falls, RI) added 25 digs as she moved to Libero.

Mott CC Defeats CCRI 30-20 and 30-20 semi-finals

The Lady Knights, though ravaged by injury, played with the heart of a champion in the semi-finals versus a very tall and talented Mott CC team that has been ranked nationally this season.  The easier thing to do for the Lady Knights would have been to roll over versus Mott but they fought to two respectable 30-20 losses in the semi-finals.

For the weekend the Lady Knights were 3-2 with two victories coming versus ranked teams #14 Hagerstown CC and versus #6 (DIII) Howard CC, in addition they had a game victory versus Northeast District rival Genesee CC.

Leading the way for the Lady Knights statistically were: Kimiyo Garcia (East Providence, RI) had 48 kills, 28 blocks, 22 digs, and five aces; April Oberhelman (Woonsocket, RI) had 46 digs, 34 kills, and 5.5 blocks; Ashley Markley (Preston, CT) had 123 assists, 22 digs, eight aces, eight blocks, and eight kills; Katie Fleming (Riverside, RI) had 33 digs, eight blocks and eight kills; Stephanie Maxwell (Warwick, RI) had 22 digs and 16 kills; while Jasmine Bonanca (Swansea, MA) had 77 digs and four aces and Jen Andreoni (Central Falls, RI) added 64 digs and three aces.

Many Lady Knights player stepped-up in a big way this weekend including Kimiyo Garcia (East Providence, RI) who led the Lady Knights with her 48 kills, 28 blocks, 22 digs, and five aces.   Katie Fleming (Riverside, RI) who played every minute of every game this weekend, Tina Hilton (Woonsocket, RI) filled in well at Outside and Middle Hitter, Jasmine Bonanca (Swansea, MA) stepped-up to play Outside Hitter, while Jen Andreoni (Central Falls, RI) played well at Libero filling in for Bonanca, and Freshman Shondelle Perry (West Warwick, RI) played very well and showed much promise in her most significant role to date.
