#18 ranked Knights fall to Philadelphia CC 103-91 record drops to 4-3

The #18 ranked Knights fell to the high powered offense of Philadelphia CC 103-91. With the loss the Knights fall to 4-3 on the season.

The high octane offense of Philadelphia CC was too much for the young Knights to deal with as the Knights trailed PCC 49-37 at the half.  The Knights were able to cut the lead to four at 80-76 with 6:00 remaining but PCC took advantage of a 5-point swing as the Knights missed a fast break lay-up and PCC answered with a 3-pointer propelling them on a 23-15 run to end the game with the 103-91 victory.

The Knights had five player score in double figures led by Co-Captain Connor Evans (Cranston, RI) 15 points with and six rebounds, Carl Lee (Warwick, RI) with 14 points and seven rebounds, and Kenny Portee (Brooklyn, NY) scored 14 points.  Also contributing for the Knights was Jamiel Nisbett (Marlboro, MA) with 12 points and Chris Birrell (Scituate, RI) with 10 points.   The Knights could not overcome the PCC one-two punch of Rob Banknight who scored 28 points and James Pope who scored 23 points who combined to score nearly half of the PCC points.

Coach Rick Harris said "Though we did not come away with a victory this weekend our Knights put forth a valiant effort against two very talented teams.  We played hard in spurts but need to understand that with our schedule we have to play hard and as a team both halves each and every night.  It is a process though, and I like the direction that we are heading in right now.  This will make us a better team in the long run."

The Knights next game will be Sunday the 26th when they travel to Charlestown, MA to face Bunker Hill CC at 3:00pm.

#18 ranked Knights fall to Mercer County CC 81-72 record drops to 4-2

The 18 ranked CCRI Knights men’s basketball team lost to Vikings of Mercer County CC 81-72 in the Mercer County Tournament.  With the loss the Knights record drops to 4-2 on the season.

It was a very closely contested game as the Knights battled to a 41-41 tie with the Vikings at the half.  The Knights had the lead 66-63 with 5:00 remaining before Mercer went on a 19-6 run to close out the game.  Mercer’s Jores Dongo, a Division I signee to Stonybrook,  proved too much for the Knights scoring 26 points with 14 rebounds, while fouling out The Knights Will Lyons (Warwick, RI) in the process allowing him to score at will down the stretch.

Leading the way for the Knights was Co-Captain Connor Evans (Cranston, RI) scoring 10 points with 10 rebounds, Jamiel Nisbett (Marlboro, MA) scoring 10 points with six rebounds, and Carl Lee (Warwick, RI) added 11 points.

Head Coach Rick Harris commented "This was a disappointing loss because many of our players did not play up to their capability, yet we were still in a position to win right until the end.  We will put this loss behind us, learn from it and get ready for Philadelphia CC our opponent Sunday at noon."

Ron Guenard finishes 13th at Cross Country Nationals to earn Third Team All-American honors

Ron Guenard (Cumberland, RI) led five CCRI runners who competed at the NJCAA Division III Cross Country Nationals on Saturday at Alfred State College in Alfred, New York.  Guenard finished 13th which earned him Third Team All-American honors, and in doing so he became the first CCRI Cross Country runner to earn back-to-back All-American honors in CCRI history as he earned Second Team All-American in 2005.

On the men’s side the Knights Ron Guenard (Cumberland, RI) finished the 8000 meter run 13th in 30:57.92 averaging 6:56.0 per mile and Hunter Stewart (Foster, RI) finished 73rd in a time of 34:27.5 averaging  6:56.0 per mile.  These were very good times with the wet, muddy course that they had to traverse.  The race was won by John Fry from the College of DuPage in 28:33.14.

On the women’s side CCRI’s Rachael Procter (East Providence, RI) finished the 5000 meter run 23rd in 24:18.9 averaging 7:49.6 per mile, Kristen Vanhouwe (North Smithfield, RI) finished 31st in 24:44.24 averaging 7:57.8 per mile, and Kristina Lanctot (Lincoln, RI) finished 36th  in 25:03.99 averaging 8:04.1 per mile.  The race was won by April Ackerman from SUNY-Cobleskill in 21:25.5.

Head Coach Gregg Cornell said: "I’m very proud of the way we ran especially Ron Guenard, who wasn’t pleased with his performance, but it’s very difficult to earn back-to back All-Americans, he was the first to do it at CCRI and for that he should be proud.  Not to mention the course conditions were very difficult with the rain and mud but he ran very well."

On the Team side of the Championships the men’s side was won by SUNY-Delhi with 36 points followed by College of DuPage in second with 95 points, and Mohawk Valley CC finished third with 127 points.  On the women’s side it was Gloucester with 59 points, followed in second by SUNY-Cobleskill and Harper College with 67 points each.   CCRI did not enter as a team because they only have five runners total and you need five runners per team (male/female) to be a team.

The Lady Knights started strong with a 13-2 lead but FMCC rallied back to cut it to 13-12 at about the ten minute mark.  At that point Head Coach Reilly called a timeout to motivate the Lady Knights who were not playing their game.  That was all they needed as they shifted into high gear and went on a 22-3 run to end the half 35-15.  In the second half the Lady Knights extended their lead and pulled away to win 68-38.

Lady Knights Upset #7 ranked Genesee CC 60-55!

Between the 12 minute mark and the 10 minute mark things got interesting as the Lady Knights lost two of their guards McNamee and Scott to minor injuries that prevented them from finishing the game.  At that point Genesee CC applied their press in an effort to cut into the Lady Knight lead.  The strategy worked to a tee for the Cougars as they cut the Lady Knights lead to 3 points but some clutch free throws from Jenny Kinney (Milford, NJ) and Ana Sierra (Bronx, NY) secured the 60-55 Lady Knights victory.  A Great win for the Lady Knights!
