Unfortunately the Knights National Championship dreams did not come true but they had an excellent season and have nothing to hang their heads about. However, making it to the Nationals for the second year in a row including the women’s team having a second team All-American in Joana Augustine shows that the CCRI Knights Tennis Program is heading in the right direction.

Joe was not the only Knight to finish in the top five yesterday he had company from his other teammates. Kyle DeCosta (Pawtucket, RI) finished 11 strokes behind Joe with a score of 160 which as good enough for second place. Kyle followed his first round score of 82 with his best round of the season by shooting a 78. The Knights also had the fourth place finisher in the event. Knights on top by 20 strokes after day one of Region XXI Golf Championship
After the first round of the Region XXI Championship the Community College of Rhode Island stands in first place with a team score of 325. The score puts CCRI 20 strokes ahead of the next closest competitor going into the final round on Thursday morning. In second place is Springfield Technical Community College with a score of 345. They are followed by Holyoke Community College (345) and Mass Bay Community College (418). Dean College does not have four golfers and will not compete in the Championship.
After one round the club house leader is the Knights’ Joe Downing (Portsmouth, RI) who shot a season low score of 73. Downing was the first golfer on the course on Wednesday and set a feverish pace. Joe played the front nine holes in a magical one under par 34. The 34 was very workman like for Downing going out and paring eight of the first nine holes while birding the difficult 376 yard, par four, fifth hole. Downing finished the round two over par and in a great position to win the event on Thursday with his seven shot lead.
As a team the Knights did very well with all four Knights coming in at 85 or below. Kevin DeCosta (Pawtucket, RI) finished the round with a strong 82 putting in his only birdie of the day in on the last hole. Teammates Andrew Bernardo (Warwick, RI) and Greg Lakeway (Exeter, RI) finished the first round with solid scores of 85.
Head Coach Richard Marchetti said after the round, "It was a great opening round to our Regional Championship. Having Joe lead the way took a lot of pressure off of his teammates. Today was a total team effort that put us in a great position for tomorrow’s round."
The Knights will be back in action Thursday at 11am as they play the second and final round of the Region XXI Championship.

Knights come up Short versus STCC, Stockbridge, and Holyoke CC
The CCRI Men’s Golf Team went winless for the first time this season on Friday when they lost 3 matches. With the losses the Knights recorded falls to 7-4 on the season. The Knights shot a team score of 352 which placed them behind Springfield Technical Community College (327), UMASS Stockbridge (342) and Holyoke Community College (348).
The Knights were lead by Andrew Bernardo (Warwick, RI) who shot a team low 82 on a difficult Chicopee Country Club. Other scores from the Knights were Joe Downing (Portsmouth, RI) who shot an 85. One shot behind Downing was teammate Kyle DeCosta (Pawtucket, RI) who shot an 86. Rounding out the foursome was Greg Lakeway (Exeter, RI) who shot a 99.
The reason for the high scores is because the team arrived just in time for their tee off. On the way to Springfield the hit major construction on RT 295 which caused them to be 45 minutes late and not have any time to practice balls on the range or take any putts on the putting green. This caused for some high numbers early which is very uncharacteristic of the Knights.
Coach Richard Marchetti said after the round, "This was a good learning experience for our young team. Playing on a course for the first time and not playing well is a good lesson for course management. Being able to take only what the course gives you and not biting off too much teaches us good course management skills. I still feel that the team is ready for the upcoming regional tournament and will play well."
The Knights will be back on the course this Wednesday for the first round of the Regional Championship which is being held on Cranston Country Club.
Five CCRI Knights earn All-Region XXI honors
Five members of the CCRI Knights baseball team earned Region XXI honors for the spring 2007 season. They include: Making First Team All-Region XXI Blake Burns (Osceola, FL), David Boyajian (Warwick, RI), Brandon Savickas (Johnston, RI), and Christopher Day (North Kingstown, RI). In addition, Co-Captain Outfielder Eric Page (South Kingstown, RI) earned the Golden Glove Award for Defensive Player of the year.
Blake Burns led the Knights with 30 hits sporting an impressive .341 batting average with 27 runs scored and 19 RBI. Brandon Savickas led the Knights with a gaudy .469 batting average with 30 hits 10 runs scored and 16 RBI. David Boyajian also had a great year at the plate batting .266 with 25 hits, 14 runs scored and 14 RBI.
Christopher Day (North Kingstown, RI) was the Knight’s #1 pitcher with an impressive 2.17 ERA to go with his 6-2 record striking out 37 batters in 45 2/3 innings pitched. Eric Page anchored the Knights defensively in the outfield with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage committing no errors in 28 games played.
The CCRI Knights baseball team lost to the #12 ranked Pointers of UConn-Avery Point 9-1 in Game 1 on the Championships on Friday and 6-5 in Game 2 on Saturday. With the losses the Knights finish the season 16-14-1 and runner-up in Region XXI.
Game 1
CCRI 1 UCAP 9
The game was very close with the score 2-1 through the first five innings UCAP was able to score three times between the sixth and seventh innings to take a 5-1 lead going into the eight before scoring four more runs in the eight to win by the mercy rule.
On the mound for the Knights Chris Day (North Kingstown, RI) took the loss though he pitched very well though the first five innings keeping the Knights within a run but the Knights bats could not get any closer as UCAP was able to ease away from the Knights as Day gave-up three more runs in his final two innings while David Maher (Richmond, RI) did not record an out and gave-up one run, and Warren Sternberg (North Kingstown, RI) pitched 2/3 of an inning and allowed three runs which allowed UCAP to win by a final of 9-1 by the mercy rule.
Offensively for the Knights Sean Arlan (East Providence, RI) led the way with two hits in three at-bats followed by Co-Captain Jake Sullivan (Lincoln, RI) who had a hit and a run scored. Also contributing for the Knights were David Boyajian (Warwick, RI), Kyle Johnson (North Kingstown, RI) and Brandon Savickas (Johnston, RI) each contributed a hit a piece.
Game 2
UCAP 6 CCRI 5
The Knights were the home team for Game 2 (though they played the game at UCAP). The Knights played with a sense of urgency in Game 2 as they faced elimination and were able to take a 5-2 lead into the top of the seventh inning. CCRI Pitcher Dave Gladding (Cranston, RI) was cruising through the first six innings and was able to get the first two out in the seventh before he ran into some tough luck. The bad luck started with a harmless fly ball to left center that Leftfielder David Martin (Portsmouth, RI) seemed to have a beat on but was called off by Centerfielder Kyle Johnson (North Kingstown, RI) and the ball fell in for a hit, the next batter also reached on a hit and Gladding walked the next batter loading the bases. More bad luck came Gladding’s way when what could have been strike three was called a foul tip by the umpire, which hurt the Knights as that batter eventually walked in another run and kept the UCAP rally alive. Gladding walked one more before being replaced by James Vaughn (Westerly, RI) who walked the first tow batter he faced, making it a total of five batter walked in a row and giving UCAP the 6-5 lead. The Knights bats were quiet in the seventh and eight innings but they had a chance to tie the score in the ninth as John Amore (Johnston, RI) led the inning off with a base hit and he was sacrificed over by Blake Burns (Osceola, FL) putting him in scoring position with one out. However, the Knights couldn’t get Amore across the plate as the next two Knight batters popped out to end the Knights’ rally and season.
On the mound for the Knights David Gladding took the loss as pitched very well though the first 6 2/3 innings he pitched but just couldn’t get that final out in the final out in the seventh inning in all he gave-up six runs on nine hits, while walking six and striking out five he was relived by James Vaughn who pitched 2 1/3 innings allowing no hits and no runs, walking two and striking out one.
Offensively for the Knights Co-Captain Eric Page (South Kingstown, RI) led the way with two hits, two RBI and a run scored, followed by Brandon Savickas (Johnston, RI) who also had two hits with a run scored. Also contributing for the Knights were John Amore with two hits and an RBI and Sean Arlan (East Providence, RI) with two hits and a run scored.

Kyle Kells (Scituate, RI) had a little trouble in the sixth giving up two runs, Victor Baez (Providence, RI) and Jesse Ladig (Deerfield, FL) each gave a run and John Amore finished out the game pitching one inning and striking out one.

The CCRI Men’s Golf Team moved it record to 7-1 on the season yesterday with two wins and one loss. The Knights shot a team score of 337 which was good enough to beat two region XXI opponents. With the 337 the Knights beat STCC and Holyoke CC who shot team scores of 346 and 398 respectively. The one team that beat The Knights was UMASS – Stockbridge who shot a low score of 336 which was one stroke better then the Knights.
Once again the Knights were lead by Freshman Joe Downing (Portsmouth, RI) who shot a career best score of 76 (par 71). The 76 was good enough to be the medalist of the four team tournament. On a difficult front nine holes Downing went out in a one over 37.
The Knights received solid efforts from its other three players. Kyle DeCosta (Pawtucket, RI) shot an 84 while teammates Andrew Bernardo (Warwick, RI) and Trevor Woolley (North Kingstown, RI) shot an 88 and 89 respectively.

Stockbridge is traditionally very strong and is usually ten to twelve strokes better then any region XXI team. However today we were only beaten by one stroke which is a definite step in the right direction for us. We are continually getting better and are eager for the Region XXI tournament on May 9-10."
