Former Knights hurler Hertzler drafted by the Oakland A’s in the 15th round with pick #480
Former CCRI Knights pitcher Brad Hertzler (East Providence, RI) who played for the Knights in 2006 was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 15th round with pick #480.
Hertzler, a left handed pitcher, was a First Team All-Region XXI Pitcher who was stellar for the Knights with a 5-1 record and a 1.469 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 49 innings pitched. Brad is currently a starter for the University of Maine Black Bears where he led the team with a 3.58 ERA and also led the team with 71 strikeouts with a 4-5 record throwing two complete games with one shutout. Season highlights included a 10 strikeout performance versus Miami, a nine strikeout performance versus UMBC, and an eight strikeout complete game performance versus Vermont. Hertzler is only a Junior so he has a decision to make on whether he will return to the University of Maine for his Senior season or go pro.
Hertzler was previously drafted in 2004 in the 32nd by the Boston Red Sox who his brother Barry Hertzler currently plays for with the AA affiliate Portland Sea Dogs. Brad was drafted in 2004 after being nominated 2004 Rhode Island Gatorade Player of the Year.
Knights shoot their best round at Nationals but still finish 17th
The CCRI Knights golf team saved their best round for last at the NJCAA Division II golf Nationals when they shot a combined 317 giving them a four-day total of 1334 or +182 which was good for 17th place. The Knights improved on their score pretty much every round as they shot 343, 335, 339, and 317 giving them a total of 1334. The Top five team in the Tournament were: #1 Nassau CC 1211 +59, #2 Rock Valley CC 1218 +66, #3 Montgomery CC 1221 +69, #4 Louisburg CC 1224 +72, and #5 Dutchess CC 1228 +76.
Leading the way for the Knights was Joe Downing (Portsmouth, RI) who finished tied for 65th shooting 85, 82, 79, and 76 for a four-day total of 322 +34. Kyle DeCosta (Pawtucket, RI) finished tied for 86th shooting 87, 80, 81, and 81 for a four-day total of 329 +41. Andrew Bernardo (Warwick, RI) finished tied for 88th shooting 83, 81, 86, and 80 for a four-day total of 330 +42. Rounding out the Knight team was Greg Lakeway (Exeter, RI) who finished 106th shooting 88, 92, 93, and 80 for a four-day total of 353 +65 and Trevor Woolley (North Kingstown, RI) withdrew on the first day. The top five individual finishers were: #1 Jose Gutierrez Louisburg CC 294 +6 (won on first playoff hole), #2 Paul Jacobsen Madison Area Technical CC294 +6, #3 Chase Williams Northeast Mississippi CC 295 +7, #4 Andy Frank Jamestown CC 296 +8, and T-#5 Jesse Moss Columbus State CC 297 +9, T-#5 Brian Viola Dutchess CC 297 +9.
Though the National Tournament did not go as planned for the Knights they still had an outstanding season highlighted by a 46-stroke Region XXI Championship win.

The CCRI Knights golf team continues to lose ground at the NJCAA Division III golf Nationals as they shoot a combined 339 in round three to give them a three-day total of 1017 putting them at +153 for the Tournament with one day left. The Knights are 99 shots of the team leader Montgomery CC who stands at +54. The top five teams are: #1 Montgomery CC +54, #2 Nassau CC +56, #3 Rock Valley CC +58, #4 Louisburg CC +61, and #5 Dutchess CC +67.
Leading the way for the Knights on day three was Joe Downing (Portsmouth, RI) who shot a 79 putting him at +30 (246) for the tournament, followed by Kyle DeCosta (Pawtucket, RI) who shot an 81 putting him at +32 (248) for the Tournament. Also contributing for the Knights were Andrew Bernardo (Warwick, RI) who shot a an 86 putting him at +34 (250) for the Tournament and Greg Lakeway (Exeter, RI) who shot a 93 putting him at +57 (273) for the Tournament.
The Knights have a tough road ahead of them if the want to move up the leader board with the next closest team Tompkins-Courtland CC 31 strokes ahead of them at +122 with one round left.
Knights shoot 335 in Day two of Golf Nationals but still way off pace at +102
The CCRI Knights Golf team improved on their Day one score of 343 shooting a 335 in Day two giving them a 678 total for 36 holes placing them +102 and 70 shots off the pace of Louisburg CC which stands in first place at +32 for the Tournament.
Leading the way for the Knights again was Andrew Bernardo (Warwick, RI) who shot an 81 giving him a two-day total of 164. Low round of the Day for the Knights was turned in by Kyle DeCosta (Pawtucket, RI) who shot an 80 giving him a two-day total of 167 tying him with teammate Joe Downing (Portsmouth, RI) who shot an 82 on day two. Greg Lakeway (Exeter, RI) shot a 92 giving him a two-day total of 180. As a team the Knights are in 17th place at +102, the top five team at the Nationals are: #1 Louisburg CC at +32, #2 Montgomery CC at +35, #3 Nassau CC at +40, #4 Central Lakes CC at +46, and Rock Valley CC at +47. The Knights look to move up the leader board in the final two days of the Nationals.

The CCRI Knights men’s golf team shot a combined 343 Day one at the NJCAA Division III golf Nationals at Chautauqua Golf Club in Jamestown, NY. Unfortunately the 343 puts the Knights 36 strokes behind Louisburg CC that shot a 307 and 35 behind Nassau that shot a 308. Rounding out the top five were #3 Montgomery CC who shot 315, #4 Central Lakes CC who shot 316, and #5 Dutchess CC shot a 317.
Leading the way for the Knights was Andrew Bernardo (Warwick, RI) tied for 60th place who shot an 83 which is 11 over par (par 72-6449 yards), followed by Joe Downing (Portsmouth, RI) tied for 81st shot an 85 putting him +13, followed by Kyle DeCosta (Pawtucket, RI) tied for 90th who shot an 87 putting him +17, Greg Lakeway (Exeter, RI) tied for 95th shot an 88 putting him +16, and Trevor Woolley (North Kingstown, RI) withdrew. Only Paul Jacobsen of Madison Area Technical College was under par shooting a 71 putting him at -1. For the Knights Bernardo, Downing, and DeCosta are within 10 strokes of finishing in the top 20. The Knights look forward to finishing the Division III Golf Championship strong with solid efforts from the top four golfers.

Knights set to Tee-off at NJCAA Golf Nationals at Chautauqua Golf Club
The CCRI Knights men’s golf team is set to tee-off at the NJCAA Division III Golf Nationals hosted by Jamestown CC at Chautauqua Golf Club. The Team of #1 golfer Joe Downing (Portsmouth, RI), #2 golfer Kyle DeCosta (Pawtucket, RI), #3 golfer Andrew Bernardo (Warwick, RI), #4 golfer Greg Lakeway (Exeter, RI), and #5 golfer Trevor Woolley (North Kingstown) were already scheduled to tee-off in the practice round earlier today as Downing and DeCosta were scheduled to tee-off off at 9:16am while Bernardo, Lakeway, and Woolley were scheduled to tee-off at 9:24am, weather permitting.
The tee times for the two-day Championship have already been set as well. On Tuesday the 5th here’s when the Knights will tee-off Joe Downing 10:04am first tee, Kyle DeCosta 10:12am first tee, Andrew Bernardo 10:20am first tee, Greg Lakeway 10:28am first tee, and Trevor Woolley 10:36am first tee. On Wednesday the 6th Woolley will tee-off from hole 10 at 9:40am, Lakeway will tee-off from hole 10 at 9:48am, Bernardo will tee-off from hole 10 at 9:56am, DeCosta will tee off from hole 10 at 10:04am, and Downing will tee-off from hole 10 at 10:12am.
The Knights look to continue their success after walking away with a 46-stroke win at the Region XXI Championship. The Knights will look for leadership from their one Sophomore Kyle DeCosta who, looks to build on his 88th place finish last year. This years Knight golf team has shown a great deal of promise as they have gotten better with every round they have played this year and should be able to build on their 15th place finish from last year t the Nationals.
