Knights late rally not enough to get past Gateway CC as they fall 79-74
The CCRI Knights men’s basketball team lost their first game in Region XXI as they fell 79-74 to Gateway CC. With the loss the Knights record falls to 9-8 on the season and 7-1 in Region XXI.
The Knights shot just 21 of 59 from the floor as they could never find their rhythm. This was a disappointing loss because the Knights handles Gateway fairly easily back in December 83-74. Though the Knights did not play their best game they showed heart and determination as they rallied back from a 64-52 deficit with just 12 minutes left to tie the game at 70-70 but the Knights could not complete the comeback as Gateway outscored the Knights 9-4 down the stretch to secure the victory.
Co-Captain Chris Birrell (Scituate, RI) led the Knights with 17 points including two 3-pointers with five steals and three assists and Kenny Portee (Brooklyn, NY) who scored 15 including three 3-pointers with two assists and two steals off the bench. Larry Kelly of Gateway led four Gateway players who scored in double figures with 26 points.
Head Coach Rick Harris said "We were not ready to play a full 40-minute game this evening with the intensity needed in order to be successful against a solid team such as Gateway CC. We did not defend well, take care of the ball, or show patience offensively. The results speak for themselves. We will really see what this team is made of in practice on Friday and Saturday when we take on Mohawk Valley CC. All we can do is work harder in practice and try to right this ship. There is no magic formula other than hard work and coming together as a team."
The Knights will play Saturday at 3:00pm versus Mohawk Valley CC, following the Lady Knights who play at 1:00pm, at the Vincent A. Cullen Field house on the CCRI Knight Campus in Warwick.

The CCRI Knights men’s basketball team lost to Division I powerhouse
Miami-Dade College 99-61. With the loss the Knights record drops to 9-5
on the season Miami-Dade improves their record to 12-3 on the season.

the Knights with a starting front line registering in at 6’7", 6’8", and
6’10" and reserves of 6’4", 6’5" and 6’11" this is definitely the
biggest team that the Knights will face this year. That combined with
the fact that the Knights were playing without 6’7" Connor Evans
(Cranston, RI) made it a very tough math-up for the Knights.
The Knights though undersized did not back down one step as they stayed
with the Sharks through most of he first half trailing by just three
with a 25-22 score at the 6:20 mark. Kenny Portee (Brooklyn NY)
