Knights Fall One Point Short of Upsetting Division I Power Globe Institute 64-63

The CCRI Knights men’s basketball team lost a heartbreaker to Division I power Globe Institute 64-63.  With the loss the Knights record falls to 12-15 on the season and 8-3 in Region XXI.

Saturday was "Sophomore Day" where the CCRI Sophomores were recognized for their contributions to the program.  The Knights honored were: AJ Coppola (Warwick, RI), Connor Evans (Cranston, RI), and Co-Captain Will Lyons (Warwick, RI).  The Knights were focused to play a great game in front of family and friends.  The Knights put forth one of their best efforts of the season but they fell one point short of victory.  The Knights had lost 87-60 to Globe Institute back on December 3rd at Globe.

The CCRI Knights stayed with the Globe Institute Knights from the opening tip.  Though Globe went into halftime with the 34-30 lead they knew they were in a much different game than the one in New York in December.  Globe extended their lead to eight points mid way through the second half but CCRI fought back to take a two point lead with 25 seconds left.  Globe’s Steve Brignol who scored a game-high 18 points converted an old fashioned 3-point play with just 5.9 seconds left to give globe the 64-63 lead.  Chris Birrell (Scituate, RI) was able to weave down the court in the final seconds and dished the ball to Lyons who shot a baseline jumper that rimmed out as time expired.  Globe takes the victory 64-63.  A tremendous effort by CCRI falls just short of victory.

Sophomore Co-Captain Will Lyons (Warwick, RI) led the Knights with 15 points eight rebounds and two assists followed by Pat Dame (West Greenwich, RI) who scored 14 points with three assists and two steals and Connor Evans (Cranston, RI) added 11 points two steals and two rebounds.  Also contributing for the Knights was Co-Captain Chris Birrell (Scituate, RI) scoring six points with five assists and Kenny Portee (Brooklyn, NY) scoring six points with three steals and two assists.

Head Coach Rick Harris said "Our best effort of the season, a great opportunity fell just short.  Now it is time to bring this effort for Dean College and the Region XXI Tournament."

The Knights next game will be Wednesday February 21st at 8:00pm versus Dean College following the Lady Knights who will play at 6:00pm.  The Men’s Dean Game will be televised via tape delay on Friday February 23rd at 8:00pm on Cox Communications Cox Sports Channel 3.

To start the second half the Lady Knights battled back into the game by applying full court pressure that both energized the team and the crowd.  The Lady Knights pressure defense caused Globe to turn the ball over and take quick shots which led to easy baskets on the other end for the Lady Knights.  The Lady Knights battled back from its 10 point halftime deficit to tie the game up at 43-43 at the 14:11 mark.  Both teams exchanged the lead for the rest of the game with neither team getting out ahead by more then three points.  With 5.9 seconds to go in the game the Lady Knights had the ball and a shot for the win however a long Denise Scott (Yonkers, NY) three-point attempt in front of the Lady Knights bench came up just short, taking the teams to overtime tied at 63.

The Lady Knights scored the first basket of the overtime on a Jenny Kinney (Milford, NJ) jump shot.  The lead would be the last lead that Lady Knights had the rest of the game.  Globe used 10-2 run over a three minute span to increase its lead to six and secured a hard fought 78-73 victory over the Lady Knights of CCRI.

The Lady Knights were led Denise Scott (Yonkers, NY) who scored 25 points on 11 for 14 shooting with five steals and five rebounds.  Sophomore Co-Captain Jenny Kinney (Milford, NJ) scored 20 points while controlling the glass with eight rebounds.  Michelle McNamee (Cranston, RI) scored 10 points and pulled down four rebounds while Latavia Vails (Odenton, MD) added eight points while dishing out four assists and grabbing four rebounds.

This was a disappointing evening on the road.  We are too good a team to accept this kind of performance.  It is gut check time and time to get ready for the Region XXI Tournament.  We need to take the correct positive steps that will enable us to play up to our abilities on a more consistent basis.

Despite late surge Knights fall to Springfield Tech CC 79-75

The CCRI Knights men’s basketball team lost to the Rams of Springfield Tech CC 79-75.  With the loss the Knights record falls to 12-12 on the season and 8-2 in Region XXI.

The Knights displayed some ring rust after not playing for almost two weeks.  The Knights were never able to get into a flow so they found themselves trailing by as many as 12 points.  The Knights were able to close the gap to three points but that is a close as they would get losing by a final score of 79-75.

Co-Captain Will Lyons (Warwick, RI) led the way for the Knights charting his fourth double-double of the season scoring 15 points and ripping down a career-high 20 rebounds, with four assists and a steal and Pat Dame (West Greenwich, RI) scored 23 points with four assist and two steals.  Also contributing for the Knights were Connor Evans (Cranston, RI) scoring nine points with five rebounds and three steals, Jake Grimes (Pawtucket, RI) scoring eight points with four rebounds and Co-Captain Chris Birrell (Scituate, RI) added seven points with two steals.

Head Coach Rick Harris said "Being off for almost two weeks created some rustiness which we were not able to overcome in the end. We never seemed to be able to get in a consistent flow.  In the end we got it to a three point deficit which I was pleased with.  The kids did not quit, but we just ran out of time.  Hope to see closer to a 40-minute effort versus TCI on Saturday."

The Knights next game will be this Saturday February 10th versus TCI at 3:00pm at the Vincent A. Cullen Field House located on the CCRI Knight Campus in Warwick.
