Lady Knights lose Region XXI Tournament but still win Region XXI Title

The CCRI Lady Knights softball team lost to Orange County CC in the Region XXI Tournament championship games 3-1 and 4-1.  With the losses the Lady Knights end the season 12-9.  However, since Orange County CC is from Region III and have no other teams to play they come to Region XXI to play for the District Championship bid.  This means whish ever team from Region XXI that finishes on top is the Region XXI Champion.  Once Orange County CC defeated Massasoit CC in the finals of the loser’s bracket of the Region XXI Tournament CCRI became Region XXI Champion.

Game 1

CCRI 1 Orange County CC 3

After scoring 37 runs in two games on Saturday the Lady Knights bats were not as potent on Sunday as they were only able to plate one run in game 1. Orange County was able to get on the scoreboard first with a run in the second inning and two in the fifth giving them a 3-0 lead going into the sixth inning.  In the sixth the Lady Knights were bale to get on the board  with one run but left runners at 2nd and third to end the inning and the scoring threat as that is as close as the Lady Knights would get, losing by a final of 3-1.

On the mound for the Lady Knights Kate Warrington (North Kingstown, RI) battled through injury to pitch very well allowing just three runs, two earned over seven innings while striking out five Unfortunately she did not have the run support to get the victory.

Offensively for the Lady Knights Tri-Captain Alyse Fram (Lincoln, RI) was 2-2 and Kate Warrington helped her own cause by going  2-3 and Jenna Bassett (Warwick RI) added an RBI double while Tri-Captain Lindsay Johnston (Pawtucket, RI) was 1-3 with a run scored.

Game 2

CCRI 1 Orange County CC 4

Once again the lack of offense for the Lady Knights came back to bite them as they were again only able to plate one run over seven innings giving pitcher Kate Warrington no room for error on the mound.  Unfortunately Orange County stayed hot at the plate scoring a run in the first inning and two in the third inning and an insurance run in the fifth.  The Only run the Lady Knights plated was on an RBI from Tri-Captain Alyse Fram (Lincoln, RI) in the third inning as the Lady Knights fell in the deciding game 4-1.

On the mound for the Lady Knights Kate Warrington (North Kingstown, RI)  pitched with the heart of a warrior battling through a leg injury and still pitching a very good game allowing four runs three earned over six innings striking out four unfortunately no runs support gave her the loss.

At the Plate the Lady Knights could only muster three hits led by Tri-Captain Alyse Fram who was 1-2 with an RBI and a stolen base followed by Brittany Sirois who was 1-2 with a run scored and Alison Balzano (Warwick, RI) added a hit.

Overall it was a great season for the Lady Knights going 12-9 and winning the Regular Season Region XXI title and the Region XXI Post-Season Title but no District Tournament birth.

End of a great career for Jasmine Bonanca (Swansea, MA).  Bonanca helped re-write the CCRI softball record book holding the single-season record in hits with 46 set last year, she also holds the single game mark for triples with two in one game a feat she accomplished in both years she played.  Bonanca also holds the career mark for doubles with 16 and triples with seven.  In addition, she ranks #2 in career hits with 80 hits behind only Lindsay Cavanagh (Warwick, RI) and #2 in career batting average with an impressive .580 career batting average behind only Amanda Ward (East Hartford, CT) who had a .590 career average

Knights take 2 from Rival Dean College and Advance to Region XXI Playoffs

Yesterday afternoon contest between Dean College and the Community College of Rhode Island was as big a regular season game as they get.  CCRI had two win both games of the double header to advance to the Region XXI playoffs or they would be eliminated.  The game was so important because in the pervious two meetings the Knights had lost and tied with Dean meaning one win by Dean they would hold the head-to-head tie breaker.  The Knights came through in a big way and won both games.  In Game one the Knights won 3-2 and in Game two the Knights beat Dean 8-1.  With the wins the Knights improve to 16-12-1.

GAME 1

In game one of the day the Knights sent David Gladding (Cranston, RI) to the mound.  Gladding got into some trouble in the first inning by allowing four of the first five Bulldog batters to reach base.  However, he was able to pitch his way out of the mess by retiring the next two Dean batters.  Dean platted across two runs in the top of the first.  The Knights however did not back down they responded by getting a lead off hit from John Amore (Johnston, RI) followed by another single by second baseman Blake Burns (Osceola, FL) who finished the game 2-3 with a run scored.  The big hit of the inning came from Jess Ladig (Deerfield, FL) who with one out tied the game with a two run single.  Like the Knights, Dean battled to get out of the inning and after one inning the score was tied at two.

From that point on both teams really struggled to muster any type of scoring chances.  Gladding really settled down for the Knights from that point on he gave up only one hit and only allowed four more base runners to reach base the rest of the game.  Gladding finished the complete game five hitter with five strike outs while only walking three batters.  This performance was good enough for his fourth win on the season.

Going into the sixth inning with the score still tied at two, Ladig led the inning off with a single and advanced to second on an error by the leftfielder Andrew JohnsonLadig was then pinch ran for by David Martin (Portsmouth, RI).  Ladig finished the day 2-3 with two RBI.  After a Jake Sullivan (Lincoln, RI) strike out the Knights Kyle Johnson (North Kingstown, RI) had the biggest hit of the season with a one out RBI single which allowed Martin to score and give the Knights a 3-2 lead going into the last inning.  In the top of the seventh Gladding made quick work of Dean getting them in order and Game one went to the Knights 3-2.

GAME 2

In Game two the Knights sent their team ace to the mound, Chris Day (North Kingstown, RI).  Entering the game Day was 5-1 on the season.  Unlike game one the Bulldogs were not able to score in the first inning.  However it was more of the same for the Knights in the first inning they were able to get their leadoff hitter on in George Tager (North Providence, RI).  Tager then scored on a double by freshmen David Boyajian (Warwick, RI).  After another quick inning by Day the Knights were able to get one more run in the bottom of the second inning and that would be all Day would need.  Day finished the complete game with eight strike outs giving up only one run while scattering five hits.

The Knights bats woke up in the third inning.  The inning started off with a single by Boyajian, which was his second hit on the day.  Boyajian single was followed by a Brandon Savickas (Johnston, RI) walk.  This had set the table for Kyle Johnson and with the two men on Johnson blew the game open with a three run homer.  Johnson finished the game 2-3 with two runs scored and three RBI’S.  The Knights would then plate across two more in the bottom of the 5th for a 8-1 victory.

With the two wins the Knights advance to the Region XXI playoffs which will begin next Friday at UCONN Avery Point.  The playoffs will be a best of three series between the Knights and Avery Point.

We are well-positioned for the upcoming New England tournament.  We will have a solid week of practice and look forward to taking the tournament."

Dame has an uncanny ability to know exactly where the ball needs to be on every play whether he must penetrate to open up shots for his teammates or himself, slowing the tempo to get the Knights back in rhythm, or verbally motivating his teammates when needed Pat does it all in stride.  In a recent Cox Sport 3 Broadcast Russ Whinnem said "we had to look at the re-play before noticing some of the excellent plays that you were making out there on the court"

Knights Head Coach Rick Harris had this to say about his point guard:  "Pat Dame is the heart and soul of our team. He has been our most consistent performer physically and mentally from Day 1.  He and Chris Birrell are the glue that holds our team together.  Pat is not flashy or is the first kid you would pick when choosing sides but at the end of the day he always has the numbers and has given your team a great chance of being successful. Pat reminds me of John Stockton, not flashy but just gets the job done. Pat has helped make my first year at CCRI much easier than if he had not been here, especially in regards to some of the personalities I had to work with.

Here’s a statistical snapshot of Pat’s great season:

Denise Scott Earns NJCAA Division II First Team All-American Honors

Denise Scott is a 5’5" freshman guard from Lincoln High School in Yonkers, NY.  She is a complete player who fills out the stat sheets game by game as evidenced by her totals in points, rebounds, assists, and steals.  Being able to do all of these things as well as being a go to player and a great teammate has earned Scott a spot on the First Team All-American.

Scott came to CCRI a wide eyed freshman looking to ease into the lineup.  However, the coaching staff had different plans for her.  They wanted to develop Denise into the go to option during the course of the season.  While Scott started off slowly, she averaged a consistent 10 points a game.  Since January 6, 2007, Scott has averaged 17.5 points per game, 4.8 rebounds per game, and three steals per game during the regular season and has become the number one go to option for Head Coach Marcus Reilly.

Scott appeared in 24 games this season for the Lady Knights and was their leading scorer.  Denise has step up numerous times with the game on the line.  The bigger the game for Scott the better she plays as evident by her stats.  It was also evident by her play in one of the more memorable women’s game to take place at Vincent A. Cullen Field House on January 21, 2007.  The defending Division I Champions Monroe Community College out of Rochester, NY come to town and beat the Lady Knights in a 53-50 thriller.  Scott scored 19 points, all which seemed to come at key times during the course of the game.  She also pulled down nine rebounds, dished out five assists and had two steals.  One day after Denise helped the Lady Knights beat Genesee Community College.  Scott scored a game high 25 that day, 20 of which came in the second half as the Lady Knights pulled away for a 63-56 victory.

With the Region XXI regular season Championship on the line on February 21, 2007, the Lady Knights beat Dean College 74-57.  Once again the Lady Knights were led by Scott who scored a game high 21 points.  This win clinched the regular season Region XXI title for the Lady Knights for the fourth straight year.  However, Scott did not just lead the team with her offense she also led them on the defense end by pulling down eight rebounds and swiping five steals.

In the Lady Knight two playoff games Scott was simply dominant.  In the Region XXI Championship game Scott poured in a game and season high 36 points.  29 of the 36 points came in the second half which helped the Lady Knights to a convincing 27 point victory.  In the Northeast district championship and the right to go to the Nationals, Scott had 22 points with seven rebounds, four assists and five steals.

The scoring streak continued once the Lady Knights got to the National Tournament.  In the first game of the tournament Denise had her second thirty point game of the postseason versus Edison Community College (Edison, OH) in a 68-65 win.  Scott finished the game with 30 points on 13-19 shooting including three 3-pointers.  Scott was also coach Reilly’s go to person down the stretch of this close game.  Over the last two minutes coach Reilly drew plays up for Denise and she responded with a basket every time for the Lady Knights.  Scott also finished the game with three assists and two rebounds.

In the third game of the tournament Scott finished one rebound shy of a double-double.  Scott finished the game with 23 points and nine rebounds in a two point loss to the number four ranked team in the country North Central Missouri College.  With these two performances Scott earned all tournament honors.

Coach Reilly speaks very highly of Scott saying, "Denise’s ability to take over a game on both ends of the floor throughout out postseason highlighted her remarkable year.  Her ability to both play within our system and make her teammates better showcase her All-American status.  As a returning sophomore, I am confident Denise will live up to her All-American status and all the responsibilities that come with this honor."

Knights downed 9-7 by Dean’s four run tenth inning rally

The CCRI Knights men’s baseball team lost to Dean College 9-7 in ten innings.  With the loss the Knights’ record falls to 6-8 on the season.

The Knights jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead early in the game but the Knights found themselves trailing 5-4 by the seventh inning.  The Knights were able to tie the score at 5-5 in the top of the ninth inning and went ahead 7-5 in the top of the tenth inning before Dean rallied to score four runs in the bottom of the tenth inning to win 9-7.  This was a very tough Region XXI loss for the Knights.

On the mound for the Knights James Vaughn (Westerly, RI) pitched very well allowing just two runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings followed by David Maher (Richmond, RI) who pitched well over 2/3 of an inning allowing three runs, just one of them earned, as errors started to do in the Knights, and then Warren Sternberg (North Kingstown, RI) pitched the final 3 2/3 innings allowing four earned runs that eventually did in the Knights.  Overall all three pitchers pitched well but four errors by the Knights were too much to overcome.

At the plate for the Knights David Boyajian (Warwick, RI) led the way for the Knights going 3-5 including two doubles and an RBI, followed by Kyle Johnson (North Kingstown, RI) who went 3-4 with a triple and two runs scored, and Sean Arlan (East Providence, RI) was 2-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.

The Knights next games will be this Saturday April 7th at Massasoit CC for a doubleheader starting at noon.
