Indoor Track and Field Outlook For 2007-2008
At the opening event of the 2008 Indoor track and Field season [Yale
collegiate Invitational] two Community College of Rhode Island athletes advanced
to the National Championship to be held at Eastern Illinois University in
Charleston Illinois on March 7th and 8th. Amanda Kelly a freshman who graduated
from Cumberland High School qualified in the weight throw with a throw of
14.33m/47-00.25 feet and in the shot put with a toss of 11.73m/38-06 feet. James
Sylvestre qualified with a school record run of 8:55.85 in the 3k event. Both
James and Amanda are currently ranked in the top eight of the NJCAA National
poll for their early season efforts. The Community College of Rhode Island Track
and Field coaching staff is extremely proud of James and Amanda for their
accomplishments because the NJCAA Indoor Nationals has historically been
dominated by the power house scholarship Track and Field programs of the
Midwest. For two athletes from a non Scholarship program to be ranked this high
in the poll is something the Community College of Rhode Island Athletic
Department will be talking about over the remainder of this season. Both James
and Amanda have a fine chance of placing in the Top 6 at the NJCAA National
Championship.
Other Notable Athletes representing The Community College of Rhode Island this
2008 Indoor Track and Field season are. Sophomore Kristin Vanhouwe from the town
of North Smithfield will be running the mile, 800m and 3000m events. Kristin has
hopes of breaking the school mile record. Kristin also has her sights on the
school 3000m record. Kristin also would like to place in the top 3 at the Region
III championship in February in one of her races. Sophomore Shondelle Perry
[West Warwick Rhode Island] has her eyes on placing in the top six at the Region
III Championship in the 55m hurdles, shot put and long jump. Dennis Lefluer
[Freshmen Coventry Rhode Island] Stephen Campagnone [Warwick Rhode Island] and
Lee DeRosa [Mansfield Massachusetts] also have the potential to place well in
February at the Region III Championship. Dennis and Lee will be running the
sprint events while Stephen is a middle distance runner. All three are looking
to place in the top 6 at The Region III Championship to be held at Hudson Valley
Community College on February 17th.
