Two Students Win Awards

Two brand new "anonymous art faculty grants" were recently awarded to two CCRI art students: Ben Rittman at Knight Campus and Bryan Caruolo at Flanagan Campus. The awards were originally proposed as one award designed to grant an eligible CCRI art student, informally nominated and selected by the faculty, for recognition of work and commitment to art. The grant was to be used to assist the recognized student with the cost of art materials. In order to qualify, the student had to be a CCRI student currently enrolled in Art Department classes. The recipient was to be recognized by the faculty as a highly motivated CCRI art student who was productive beyond an ordinary level of expectation and had become involved in the making of art for the passion and joy of exploration. What began as an anonymous gesture by one CCRI Art Faculty member was matched by another anonymous gesture by another CCRI Art Faculty member when two deserving students were nominated from different campuses. Thus congratulations to Ben and Bryan and thank you to those special CCRI Art Faculty members, who ever you are!

Faculty News

Professor Nancy Wyllie spent part of her Fall 2006 sabbatical in Belize and Guatemala where she photographed and filmed  Mayan sites including Tikal and Actun Tunichil Muknal (Cave of the Crystal Maiden). Actun Tunchil Muknal is located in a cave deep in the Belizean jungle. Vertical rock climbs and swims through 12' frigid pools of water are required to reach the crystallized remains of a 15 year old Mayan virgin who lies 40 feet above the waters surface. Wyllie is completing a video which incorporates footage from her experiences in Central America. Upcoming exhibitions include a show of photoconstructions at the Nahid Khaki Gallery and a digital video for a project titled Dreams and possibilities at the Whitney/ Altria in March 2007.

Opportunities for Art Students

Steel Yard Apprenticeship Program

The Steel Yard is pleased to announce the awardees of our pilot apprenticeship program. A partnership with the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, the Steel Yard Apprenticeship Program in Traditional Occupational Art is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). Master/Apprentice pairs from a number of traditional and occupational arts competed for these four coveted grants. Beginning their individual programs this spring are:

Chris Vicini and Heidi Born (Lost Wax Casting)
Tim Whitehouse and Joseph Fournier (Timber Framing)
Lu Heintz and Lauren Fisher (Blacksmithing)
Mika Seeger and Marguerite Delucia Hall (Ceramics)

Projects vary greatly from team to team, but it is our hope that this pilot program will give the Steel Yard the opportunity to examine our potential to develop and support our own version of the master/apprentice model. Usually associated with European craft practice, master/apprentice programs are often serious life-long commitments for the most dedicated pairs. We look forward to bringing you more details on these projects as they develop and inviting you to the final public presentation. Congratulations to all grantees!
