The 15th annual faculty and staff Professional Development Day featured remarks from President Meghan Hughes and many sessions of professional and academic importance. The opening session keynote speaker was Gregory C. Elliott, Ph.D., professor of sociology at Brown University. Elliot is a social psychologist whose areas of teaching and research address two fundamental questions of human concern: “Who am I?” and “Where do I fit in?” His presentation focused on the causes and consequences of mattering as it relates to making a difference in the lives of others. The closing session featured keynote Mike Cross, Ph.D., associate professor of chemistry at Northern Essex Community College. Cross didn’t need to supplement his doctorate in organic chemistry from the University of Utah with an associate degree in liberal arts, but he did just that – going undercover to learn about the challenges his students face in pursuing higher education. Hear Cross speak about his experience as “The Undercover Professor” in this video of his presentation.
