About AAWCC/RI
Background
The need for a women's organization at the Community College of Rhode
Island was identified by the Task Force on Women's Issues, which was
convened in November 1996. Bi-monthly meetings followed, drawing women
together from across the campuses, across divisions, and across
employment levels. The response to these meetings was strong and
encouraging.
At these meetings we were able to socialize, network and listen to a
variety of presenters, including a panel of CCRI women who discussed
their own professional development, colleagues from sister institutions
and the newly appointed Commissioner of Higher Education. The need to
formalize, establish goals, and develop a mission statement soon became
evident to us.
The first step in this direction took place on March 26, 1997, with a
vote to affiliate with the National Council and establish AAWCC/RI.
Since that time, we have elected a slate of officers, drafted Chapter
bylaws, and held the first of many exciting and successful networking
events.
Mission
The mission of the CCRI Chapter of AAWCC, a dynamic, proactive alliance of and for CCRI women across positions of employment, divisions, and campuses, is to inspire women to reach their highest level of fulfillment and productivity by:
- Providing a strong, unified voice for women that is respected and sought after within the institution.
- Utilizing that voice to promote change.
- Offering opportunities for networking, advancement, and leadership development.
- Building awareness of and facilitating access to opportunities within and beyond the institution.
