Meeting called to order at 9:05 a.m. on Tuesday, August 1, 2000 at the Flanagan Campus
Attendees: Stephen Marginson, Manny Terezakis (FC), Edna O'Neill Mattson (KC), Richard Robinson (FC), James Ellis (KC), George Sousa (FC), Donna Scattone (KC), Robert Antonson (FC), Joanne Jacobs (FC), Barbara Legg (KC), Cathy Tessier (FC)
Barbara Legg inquired if the addition would be a closed environment, relating to the air-conditioning system. Dean Marginson indicated it would remain open wherever possible. Also noted was the Metropolitan School being built near the Providence Campus. The College will be sharing facilities with the Metropolitan School; such as, the gymnasium and Library.
Manny gave an update on Chemical/Environmental Safety Issues:
- EPA Work
- The EPA is really "coming down hard" on colleges and universities.1. Disposed of old chemical inventory
2. Mercury removal has been addressed
- Created a Safety Web Page

- Respirator Testing
- OSHA requires that employees undergo physical examination and fit testing prior to using a respirator. Occupational Health & Rehabilitative Services is conducting the testing the months of July, August, and September.Joanne inquired if students would be undergoing fit testing for respirator use at clinical sites. Steve indicated: Not at this time.
- Developing an Oil Spill Prevention Counter-Measure Plan.
- The Physical Plant Department has been taking measures against infection from the West Nile Virus by eliminating any standing water and treating ponds in the area with appropriate insecticides.
Security and Safety Department:
Steve introduced the Emergency Response Guide developed by the Security and Safety Director and Assistant Director - The guide outlines safety procedures practiced by the College that will ultimately provide a safer environment for all.
George Sousa reported on the Physical Plant Department:
- Training for managers on the proper use of personal protection equipment was attended.
Donna Scattone presented an issue involving smoking in the receiving area at the Knight Campus. Suggested placing signs instructing people to smoke further away from building. Steve noted that no signs would be put up, but that policing of the area will be increased and asked Chief Ellis to take appropriate action.
Joanne Jacobs discussed the issue of latex allergies. Wants to change College policy to include the purchase of non-latex gloves for the labs and physical plant employees who utilize them. Discussed the possibility of stocking them in Central Stores. She was asked to meet with Manny and submit more information.
The area of policy regarding transporting gas cylinders through the building was discussed. Jim Ellis indicated there is a policy in place and that appropriate carts have been purchased. Security should be notified and they will escort the designated person through the building. All appropriate staff including Manny, Physical Plant, and Security will meet immediately to finalize a comprehensive policy for distribution this Fall semester.
The next meeting will be scheduled for early November at the Knight Campus. Perhaps a tour of the new addition might be feasible at that time.
