Here's what Christine Callaghan, a
student aide in the library, says about her five favorite reads:

Good Omens: The Nice
and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch: A Novel
by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett
Who knew a book about the
Apocalypse could be so amusing? Apparently, the adoption of
the Anti-Christ by the wrong family throws a monkey wrench into
plans both evil and divine for the upcoming end of the world.
Hilarity ensues.

The Thrawn Trilogy by Timothy Zahn:
Heir to the Empire,
Dark Force Rising,
and The Last Command.
These books continue in the Star
Wars universe five years after Return of the Jedi. They were
among the first to continue the original trilogy over fifteen years
ago and they're still generally considered the best, with good
reason.

Shibori: The
Inventive Art of Japanese Shaped Resist Dyeing; Tradition,
Techniques, Innovation by Yoshiko Wada, Mary Kellogg Rice, and
Jane Barton
This book is not only full of great examples of clothes and
textiles as art, both historical and contemporary, it's also full of
techniques for making your own. Anyone who has taken the
Textiles/Fibers course offered by our Art Department is told that
this book is the "Shibori Bible" and it really is.

1,000 Indian Recipes by Neelam Batra (check
Ocean State Libraries for
availability)
The title is no exaggeration -- there really are that many
recipes here, ranging from the simple and quick to the complex and
extravagant, the extremely traditional to the Westernized, including
various regional specialties. This is a great book to have if
you like Indian food but don't already know how to cook it.
When you don't know what to make for dinner, just flip through until
a recipe grabs you. If nothing else, follow the spice blend
recipes and use them to flavor other, less traditional dishes.

Guerrilla Girls'
Bedside Companion to the History of Western Art
This is probably the least stuffy book about art history ever.
If you ever read a more traditional art history textbook and were
not only bored to tears but wondered what the heck all the women
were doing then, remedy that with this book. |
