Susan Miller's Five Favorite Books

The following is Susan's current list of  "Five Favorite" graphic novels, which changes as she explores the genre.  Susan is an Assistant Professor, Reference Librarian/Coordinator of Library Instruction, at the Flanagan Campus library.

The Photographer

The Photographer: Into War-Torn Afghanistan with Doctors Without Borders by Emmanuel Guibert, Didier Lefèvre, and Frédéric Lemercier

This book is the account of a photo-journalist in Afghanistan in 1986, during the country's war with the Soviet Union.  Guibert provides the story of his journey in mixed visual media, including drawings and photographs, as he accompanies several physicians who are part of the Doctors Without Borders program.  The Photographer is an American Library Association Notable Book for 2010.

Fun Home

Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic by Alison Bechdel

Bechdel's memoir in graphic narrative format is both visually and thematically complex.  Her beautiful drawings depict an unusual family life, where her family lived in an inherited Victorian funeral home.  Her mother was a gifted writer and her father an English teacher, historic preservation expert, funeral home director, and, as Alison discovers, a closeted homosexual.  Bechdel reflects on all she learned from her father who inspired her to read great literature and to be true to herself.

Incognegro

Incognegro: A Graphic Mystery by Mat Johnson and Warren Pleece

Set during the Harlem Renaissance, the New York-based New Holland Herald reporter Zane Pinchback investigates vigilante mobs in the Deep South.  Being a light-skinned African-American, he is able to "pass" and obtain first-hand reports of mob action.  According to The Black World Today, Incognegro "[b]eautifully alternates humor and horror.  A powerful, passionate, funny, adult work to be read and discussed."

Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species

Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species: A Graphic Adaptation by Michael Keller and Nicolle Rager Fuller

This beautifully illustrated graphic novel tells the story of Darwin's life and the ideas that shaped his studies.  It is an excellent way to gain understanding of Darwin's theories, and to place in perspective how his work was received at the time of its publication.

Che

Che: A Graphic Biography by Sid Jacobson and Ernie Colón

This visually beautiful biography of Ernesto "Che" Guevara de la Serna traces his life from boyhood, to motorcycle journeys with Alberto Granado, to his work with the Cuban Revolution.  The book provides a new and interesting way to learn about the politics and history of Latin America.
