Occupational Title: Dental Hygienist

The dental hygienist is a licensed professional who provides primary preventive dental services to patients in a wide variety of settings. Students in this program attend lecture and laboratory classes, and provide treatment in a modern, state of the art dental hygiene clinic at the Flanagan Campus in Lincoln. This course of study prepares students for board examinations required for dental hygiene licensure.

Technical Standards: The physical activity (Strength) level for Dental Hygienist (078.361-010) is classified as "Light" by the Department of Labor in The Dictionary of Occupational Titles.

Admission Requirements:

  • High school transcript or general equivalency diploma (GED) (Official college transcript for transfer students)
  • BIOL 1010: Human Anatomy (Must be completed with at least a grade of "C")
  • BIOL 1020: Human Physiology (Must be completed with at least a grade of "C")
  • CHEM 1010 (Must be completed with at least a grade of "C"); CHEM 1180 and 1190 for students wishing to pursue a B.S. degree
  • DENT 1000 (Must be completed with at least a grade of "C")
  • Note: Any student who has taken DHYG 1000: Introduction to Dental Hygiene with a grade of C or better is exempt from DENT 1000.
  • ENGL 1005 (by testing or coursework)
  • MATH 0600 (by testing or coursework)
  • ENGL 0890 (by testing or coursework)
  • Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or better for all college courses taken.
  • BIOL 2210: Introduction to Microbiology and all science courses must be completed with a grade of "C" or better or the course(s) must be repeated.

Program Requirements:

  • Students must complete all BIOL, CHEM, DHYG and DENT courses with a grade of C or better.
  • A cumulative grade point average (GPA)of 2.0 or better is required at the end of each semester to proceed in the program.
  • General education courses in the dental hygiene curriculum may be taken prior to the semester recommended. All courses must be completed by the recommended semester.
  • Program faculty reserve the right to dismiss any student from the program or to refuse reinstatement based on academic, clinical or professional performance.
  • ENGL 1300 may not be substituted for ENGL 1010

Dental Assisting Certificate (DaST)

Flanagan Campus

The primary function of the dental assistant is to help the dentist. Students in this program attend lecture and laboratory classes and receive actual clinical experience through assignments to a variety of dental health care facilities.

This course of study prepares students for the certification examination given by the Dental Assisting National Board, Inc. Students who successfully complete the program are awarded a certificate by the college. Students are responsible for purchasing dental instruments and uniforms, as well as for certification exam fees.

  • Accuplacer score of 75-80
  • Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or better for all college courses taken
  • DENT 1000: Introduction to Dental Health Careers (must be completed with at least a grade of "C")
  • NOTE: Any student who has taken DHYG 1000: Introduction to Dental Hygiene is exempt from DENT 1000
