CCRI Knights gear-up for Championship Week
The #12 ranked CCRI Knights men’s basketball team looks
to repeat as Region XXI Champions on Saturday at 4:00pm when they play the
winner of the Dean College vs. Massasoit CC that will be played Wednesday
March 1st at 8:00pm at the Cullen field house in Warwick.
The Knights, 19-8 on the season, are led by the Nation’s
leading scorer Marvin Owens (Bridgeport, CT) who is averaging 27.4 points,
8.1 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 2.7 steals per game. Owens, with 1,354 career
points is just 44 points away from matching and 45 points away from owning
the CCRI All-time scoring mark of 1,398 set by Brendan Murphy
(90-92). Also contributing for the Knights are Marquis Victor (Lawrence, MA)
14.2 points and 2.1 assists per game and Travon Little (Danbury, CT)
averaging 11.3 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. The Knights are coming off
a rough 72-65 loss to the Dean Bulldogs late in February look to cement
themselves as the top team in Region XXI.
The CCRI Knights women’s basketball team also looks to
repeat as Region XXI Champions when they face the Bulldogs of Dean College
Wednesday March 1st at 6:00pm at the Cullen field house in
Warwick.
The Knights, 13-9 on the season, are led by Monet Johnson
(Brooklyn, NY) averaging 17.1 points, 9.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.9
steals per game, Jenny Kinney (Milford, NJ) averaging 11 points and 7.9
rebounds per game, and Odessa Williams (Stratford, CT) who missed nine games
to injury and is averaging 10.3 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. The women
are also coming off a tough 75-73 road loss to the Dean Bulldogs will try
top re-establish themselves as the top team in Region XXI.
Three CCRI Knights are preparing for the NJCAA indoor
track Nationals they are Jasmine Jennings (Warwick, RI), Sherilyn Nicholas
(Taunton, MA) and Mike Dolan (South Kingstown, RI). Jennings will compete in
the weight throw and the shot put, Dolan will compete in the weight throw,
while Nicholas will compete in the high jump, 800m and the pentathlon. They
will compete March 3-4 at Kansas State University in Manhattan KS.

#12 ranked CCRI Knights upended by Dean Bulldogs
72-65
The #12 ranked CCRI Knights men’s basketball lost to
their chief rival in Region XXI Dean College bulldogs 72-65. With the loss
the Knights record falls to 19-8 on the season. The Knight loss snaps a 23
game Region XXI winning steak the Knights hadn’t lost a Region XXI game
since the Region XXI Championship in 2004.
Darby Brown (New London, CT) led the Knights with 15
points with two steals and two assists, Marvin Owens (Bridgeport, CT) scored
13 points with seven rebounds, four steals and two assists. Also
contributing for the Knights were Will Lyons (Warwick, RI) who scored 13
points with three rebounds and Jeremi Taitt (Roslindale, MA) added 11 points
and four boards.
The Knights did not play their best game as they shot
just 36% from the field and just 50% from the free throw line. Combine that
with being on the road in a hostile environment you can see why the Knights
were held 27 points below their season scoring average of 91.7 points per
game. The Knights trailed 26-36 at the half. In the second half the Knights
played slightly better on the offensive side of the ball but still only
managed 39 more points losing by a final of 72-65.
The Knights next game will be Saturday March 4th
at 4:00pm versus the winner of the Dean College vs. Massasoit CC game. That
game will be played Wednesday March 1st at the Cullen Field House
on the CCRI Knight Campus in Warwick following the Region XXI women’s
Championship game between CCRI and Dean College at 6:00pm.

CCRI Knights men win first ever Indoor Track District
Championship Knights women finish 2nd
The CCRI Knights men’s Indoor track team dominated the
Northeast District indoor track District Championships with 114 points
outscoring Queensborough CC, their next closest competitor by 84 points. The
Knights men won their first ever District Championship led by 15 District
Champion performances. The CCRI Knights women’s indoor track team finished
runner-up to Kingsborough CC 93 points to 79 points with an impressive
effort from their six District Champions.
The CCRI Knights men’s indoor track team was led by Bryan
Galvin (Seekonk, MA) who was District Champion in the 1000m with a time of
2:58.2, the mile with a time of 4:53.00, he was also part of the District
Champion teams in the 4x800m with Kevin White (Swansea, MA), Joe Hannon
(Woonsocket, RI) and Nick Weinhofer (New Foundland, CA) in a time of 9:19.4
and the District Champion distance medley team with Hannon, Mike Dolan
(South Kingstown, RI), and Jake McMillen (Coventry, RI) with a time of
11:45.6. White was also District Champion in the 400m with a time of 52.1
seconds, the 55m hurdles with a time of 8.8 seconds, and the long jump with
leap of 19’0.5". Jaimaal Munir (Warwick, RI) set a new CCRI record winning
the triple jump with a leap of 40’8.5". Munir was also District Champion in
the high jump with a leap of 5’6". Chris Farrell (Lincoln, RI) was the
District Champion in the 3000m with a time of 10:05.6 and the 5000m with a
time of 18:02.3. Other CCRI District Champions include Maurice Rogers
(Clinton, MA) who won the 200m District Championship with a time of 23.9
seconds in his last meet ever as a Knight and Hunter Stewart (Foster, RI)
set a new school record when he became the District Champion in the 600m
with a time of 1:25.2. Hannon also took home the District Championship in
the 800mwith a time of 2:12.4 and Anthony Saucier (Coventry, RI) won the 55m
with a time of 6.7 seconds.
The men’s team put forth a spectacular team effort led by
nine sophomores to capture their first District Championship ever after
finishing runner-up the last two years straight.
The Knights women’s indoor track team put forth a great
effort to finish runner-up in the District Championships to Kingsborough CC
led by their six District Champion performances. The Knights women’s team
was led by District championship performances from Sherilyn Nicholas
(Taunton, MA) in the 1000m with a time of 3:49.8 and the high jump with a
leap of 4’8" and Mary (Temi) Oyekoya (Woonsocket, RI) in the 55m hurdles
with a time of 9.2 seconds and the triple jump with a leap of 31’10.75".
Jasmine Jennings (Warwick, RI) won the District Championship in the shot put
with a throw of 36’6.75" and Lani Pollack (Deland, FL) won the District
championship in the 5000m with a time of 27:15.2.
The CCRI Knights women’s indoor track team placed well in
many events but came-up short to District Champion Kingsborough CC.
Three CCRI Knights are preparing for the NJCAA indoor
track Nationals they are Jasmine Jennings, Sherilyn Nicholas and Mike Dolan.

CCRI Knights to host Men’s and Women’s Region XXI
Tournaments
The CCRI Knights men’s and women’s basketball teams will
host both the men’s and women’s Region XXI Tournaments.
The CCRI Knights women’s basketball team has won the coin
flip to become the #1 seed in the women’s Region XXI Championship Game
versus Dean College Wednesday March 1st at 6:00pm at the Cullen
Field House on the CCRI Knight campus in Warwick.
Immediately following the Region XXI women’s championship
game will be the men’s Region XXI play-in game featuring Dean College versus
Massasoit CC at 8:00pm at the Cullen Field house on the CCRI Knight campus
in Warwick.
The Men’s Region XXI Championship game will be played
Saturday March 4th at 4:00pm between the CCRI Knights and the
winner of the Dean vs. Massasoit game. Marvin Owens (Bridgeport CT) will
look to become CCRI’s all-time leading scorer during the Region XXI
Championship game. Owens currently has 1,341 career points, needs just 58
points between the last regular-season game versus Dean College on Thursday
the 23rd and the Region XXI Championship game. Good luck Marvin.

Owens becomes CCRI’s 2nd all-time scorer
as he leads Knights past Fashion Institute 77-68
The CCRI Knights men’s basketball team defeated the
Fashion Institute of Technology 77-68 on Sunday. With The win the Knights
record improves to 19-7 on the season.
The Nation’s leading scorer Marvin Owens (Bridgeport, CT)
led the Knights scoring 30 points with 13 rebounds and two blocks. With
Owens’ 30 point effort he now moves in to second place on the CCRI all-time
scoring list with 1,341 career points just ahead of Rick Santos
(’71-’73) who had 1,340 career points and just 57 points behind Brendan
Murphy (’90-’92) who has 1,398 career points. If Owens keeps at this
pace he could become CCRI’s all-time scorer in the Region XXI Tournament.
Also contributing for the Knights were Marquis Victor (Lawrence, MA) who
scored 14 points with five rebounds and Jeremi Taitt (Roslindale, MA) added
a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Knights started the game slowly scoring just 29
points in the first half but were able to play excellent defense and hold
Fashion Institute to just a 30-29 halftime lead. In the second half the
Knights came out invigorated and outscoring the Tigers 48-38 to pull away
and take the 77-68 victory.
The Knights final regular season game will be Thursday
the 23rd at Dean College at 7:00pm. The Knights will then prepare
themselves for the Region XXI Tournament March 4th and 5th
at the Cullen Field House game times TBD.
Knights fall to Notre Dame Prep 98-68
The CCRI Knights women’s basketball team fell to the
highly touted Crusaders of Notre Dame Prep 98-68. The Knights lose their
third game in a row and their record drops to 13-11on the season.
Monet Johnson (Brooklyn, NY) led the knights with scoring
24 points with eight rebounds. Also contributing for the Knights were Odessa
Williams (Stratford, CT) with 12 points, six rebounds and three assists, Ana
Sierra (Bronx, NY) who just missed a double-double scoring 11 points with
nine rebounds and three assists, and Jenny Kinney (Milford, NJ) added seven
points and led the team with 14 rebounds.
The Knights fell behind the Crusaders early and could not
dig themselves out of the hole as they trailed 56-28 at the half. In the
second half the Knights played much better but were not able to close the
lead losing by a final of 98-68.
The last three games for the Knights have been learning
experiences as the Knights have had to deal with hostile environments and
top talent. Hopefully the lessons learned in the losses will help them grow
together as a team as they move into the post-season.
The Knights are still awaiting the coin flip to see where
they will play the Region XXI Championship game versus Dean later this week.

Knights fall to Globe Institute 74-68
The CCRI Knights women’s basketball team fell to Division
I power Globe Institute 74-68. With the loss the Knights record drops to
13-10 on the season.
Monet Johnson (Brooklyn, NY) led the way for the Knights
with a double-double scoring 16 points and pulling down 13 rebounds. Odessa
Williams (Stratford, CT) in her second game back from injury added 13 points
and eight rebounds while Michelle McNamee (Cranston, RI) scored 13 points
including three 3-pointers and Jenny Kinney (Milford, NJ) added 10 points.
The Knights had a rough day shooting fro the field
shooting just 27% (17-62) from inside the 3-point line. Even with the poor
shooting percentage the Knights were able to keep the game close trailing
just 33-32 at the half. In the second half the Knights were outscored 41-36
taking another tough loss on the road.
The Knights play Sunday at home versus the top ranked
prep school in the nation Notre Dame Prep at 1:00pm

Johnson’s 36 points not enough as Bulldogs upset
Knights 75-73
The CCRI Knights women’s basketball team lost to the
Bulldogs of Dean College 75-73. With the loss the Knights record falls to
13-9 on the season. CCRI and Dean have split their head-to-head meetings the
host the Region XXI Championship game will be determined by a coin flip this
weekend at the Region XXI Directors meeting.
Monet Johnson (Brooklyn NY) led the Knights scoring 36
points, ripping down 13 rebounds and dishing out four assists. Also
contributing for the Knights were Jenny Kinney (Milford, NJ) who scored 18
points with 14 rebounds, Renee Buck (FT Gully, Victoria, Australia) added
six points five assists and a remarkable eight steals, and Michelle McNamee
(Cranston, RI) added eight points.
The Knights started the game well and took a 40-35 lead
into halftime. In the second half the Bulldogs fought their way back into
the game and took a 73-70 lead with 50 seconds left on a 3-pointer by
Jessica Ricci. The Knights were able to tie the game at 73-73 on two free
throws by Monet Johnson with just 12 seconds left. With 7.7 seconds left
Renee Buck was called for a blocking foul sending Tanya Freeman to the line,
Freeman made both free throws. The Knights were unable to get a shot off
before time expired as they took the tough road loss 75-73.
The Knights play Saturday at Globe Institute at 1:00pm
before coming home on Sunday to play their final regular season game versus
Notre Dame Prep at 1:00pm.

Eight CCRI indoor track school records set at
Wesleyan Invitational
The CCRI men’s and women’s indoor track team set eight
new school records this weekend at the Wesleyan Invitational.
Sherilyn Nicholas (Taunton, MA) led the way for the CCRI
women’s team setting a new record in the long jump with a leap of 15’7" and
in the 800m with a time of 2:26.76 while Rachael Procter (East Providence,
RI) set a new mark in the1000m with a time of 3:28.47. Nicholas does the
Pentathlon and scores 2810, a higher score then she had in December at the
U.R.I. Pentathlon she placed 6th in the shot put with a throw of
29’10.75", 2nd in the high jump with a leap of 5’00.25", first in the long
jump with a leap of 15’7" (school record) and 7th in the 55m
hurdles with a CCRI record time of 10.69 sec and first in the 800m with a
CCRI record time of 2:26.76. Also contributing for the women were Jasmine
Jennings (Warwick, RI) who won the weight throw for the third meet in a row
with a throw of 51"4.25", Jennings placed 2nd in the shot put
with a throw of 11.21m and Mary (Temi) Oyekoya (Woonsocket, RI) won the 55m
hurdles with a time of 9.2 sec.
The CCRI men were led by record setters Chris Farrell
(Lincoln, RI) in the 5000m with a CCRI record time of time of 16:50.20,
Hunter Stewart (Foster, RI) in the 800m with a CCRI record time of 2:05.05,
Bryan Galvin (Seekonk, MA) in the 1000m with a time of 4:40.97, and the
relay team of White, Hannon , Galvin, and Stewart in the 4x800m with a time
of 2:44.568:41.25, and Mike Dolan in the weight throw with a throw of
46’8.75". In addition, Kevin White (Swansea, MA) ran a nice 400m race in a
time of 52.81 good for second place, the best 400m by a CCRI male this year
and Jaimaal Munir (Warwick, RI) places 2nd in the high jump with
a leap of 6’2".
The Knights next meet will be the Northeast District
Championships Tuesday February 21st at Rockland CC in Suffern,
NY.

#14 ranked Knights spank Springfield Tech. 106-55
The #14 ranked CCRI Knights men’s basketball team
defeated the Rams of Springfield Tech. CC 106-55. With the win the Knights
record improves to 18-6 on the season and 11-0 in Region XXI.
Marvin Owens (Bridgeport, CT) led the Knights scoring 26
points with five assists, five rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Owens
now has 1,270 career points, just 128 points behind Brendan Murphy who
stands atop the CCRI all-time scoring list. Owens is on pace to catch Murphy
at the Northeast District Tournament if he maintains his current 27.375
points per game scoring average. Also contributing for the Knights were
Marquis Victor (Lawrence, MA) who scored 15 points and four assists, Travon
Little (Danbury, CT) who had another double-double with 12 points and 10
rebounds, and Ben Stiles (Narragansett, RI) added 11 points.
The Knights took control of the game early in the first
half led by Marvin Owens who scored 22 of his 26 points in the first half.
The Knights took a 26-8 lead at the 12:45 mark on a steal and fast break
dunk by Owens. The Knights extended the lead to 48-24 at the 3:32 mark on
another steal and fast break dunk this time by big Will Lyons (Warwick, RI)
that brought the crowd to it’s feet. The Knights led Springfield Tech. 54-29
at the half. In the second half the Knights were able to get their reserves
into the game. They were able to build on the Knights lead led by Ben Stiles
who scored 11 points in about six minutes of play while Will Lyons added
seven second half points as the Knights won by a final of 106-55.
The Knights will play next Saturday at Division I power
Globe Institute at 3:00pm and Sunday at Fashion Institute of Technology at
2:00pm.

#14 ranked Owens and Little help Knights wiggle past
Warriors 92-85
The #14 ranked CCRI Knights men’s basketball team
defeated the Warriors of Massasoit CC 92-85. With the win the Knights record
improves to 17-6 on the season and 10-0 in Region XXI.
Travon Little (Danbury, CT) joined the 20-20 club for the
second time this season scoring 23 points and 21 rebounds with three assists
and two blocks to lead the Knights while Captain Marvin Owens (Bridgeport,
CT) led all scorers with 29 points with 10 rebounds and four assists. Also
contributing for the Knights were Marquis Victor (Lawrence, MA) who scored
15 points including three 3-pointers with two assists and drew two key
offensive charges late in the second half, Jeremi Taitt (Roslindale, MA)
charted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds while Ray Ross (Port
Washington, NY) added six points six assists.
Like many recent games for the Knights it was a tale of
two halves; in the first half the Knights maintained control led by 21
points from Marvin Owens and 12 points from Travon Little, in the second
they had to fight to keep the lead. The Knights started the game with a 20-2
run in the first six minutes they extended the lead to 31-9 on a sick alley-oop
dunk by Owens from Little at the 10:50 mark. The Warriors fought back to cut
the lead to 16 at 55-39 by the half. In the second half the ‘Warriors came
out to play-ay" (The Warriors 1978) as they started the second half
with a 16-3 run to cut the Knight lead to three at 58-55 by the 15:00 mark
led by George Guyton who scored 17 of his team leading 27 points in the
second half. They were able to tie the game at 70-70 at the 10:00 mark and
took a 73-72 lead at the 9:20 mark on a 3-pointer from Darnell Wilson. The
Knights quickly took the lead back on a rare 3-pointer from Little making
the score 75-73 with 9:00 left. The Knights again extended the lead to 11 on
a lay-up by Jeremi Taitt making the score 87-76 at the 5:00 mark. Massasoit
cut the lead to five on a lay-up by Wilson with 15.6 left but that is as
close as they would get as Marquis Victor sealed the victory with two free
throws making the final 92-85 Knights.
The Knights next game will be this Saturday versus
Springfield Tech CC at 1:00 pm at the Vincent A. Cullen Field House located
on the CCRI Knight campus in Warwick

Kinney and Shaw lead Knights past Naval Prep 65-37
The CCRI Knights women’s basketball team rolled past the
rams of Naval Prep 65-37. Wit the win the Knights record improves to 13-8 on
the season.
Jenny Kinney (Milford, NJ) led the Knights scoring 18
points with 14 rebounds and three steals. Tamara Shaw (Norwalk, CT) also
scored 18 points including two 3-pointers with five assists. Also
contributing for the Knights was Monet Johnson (Brooklyn, NY) who scored 11
points with eight rebounds, four assists and an amazing seven steals and Ana
Sierra (Bronx, NY) added eight points and three steals.
The Knights were playing shorthanded without the services
of center Odessa Williams (Stratford, CT), forward Eszence Walker
(Stratford, CT), and point guard Lasheena Boyd (Stratford, CT). The Knights
took control of the game from the opening tip stifling the Rams with
pressure defense which led to 22 team steals and easy baskets for the
Knights. The Knights took a 40-17 into halftime led by 12 points each from
Kinney and Shaw. In the second half the Knights coasted to victory extending
their winning margin to 28 points winning by a final of 65-37.
The Knights look to continue their winning ways on the
road Saturday at CCBC-Dundalk at 8:00pm and Sunday at #19 ranked Cecil
Community College at 2:00pm.
